I was 20 years old never used under quilt. Just hammock, rain poncho for a tarp. And wool blanket. Second off you sleep, and get out and move on. Oh I woke up it was raining out I could hear something weird. Finally got up and looked. There was a female deer under me. She looked at me with an expression. Don't make me leave its raining I just held my hand out like okay lady your fine I got back in and she settled down, and we want back to sleep. In the morning she was gone. I still laugh at that.

Two people sleeping in one hammock is 100% fine! Probably not for everyone but me and my gf spent three months in norway wildcamping in our hammock. We always slept together in the same hammock, has alot of advantages, especially when you have minus degrees etc. It do be a very cuddle heavy experience but when the chemistry between you two matches its such a great sleep! We only slept in the tent in a couple of occasions where we were above the tree line on a mountain somewhere.

The setup of a hammock-system, is more fun though than setting up a tent. One of the big Pros of a hammock-system to me is the overall cleanliness. I never liked tents for that reason. Tents on wet muddy ground never apealed to me, especially when you have to pack it back up, and its still wet and dirty. You then have another task of cleaning it again once, back home.

Another thing I would note for those being a little freaked out of it being more exposed in a hammock than in an full enclosure like a tent. True, you may be a little more exposed, but in a hammock, you can see what’s coming at you before it gets to you. In a tent, well, you are kind of unzipping the door and peaking/ walking out into the unknown. So, if thinking in a bit of a “tactical/ defensive” mindset, seeing what coming towards you before it gets there gives you a little more time to prepare. I have come to the conclusion that hammock camping for me is far better than tent camping. Better nights rest, more in tune with your surroundings, and the view at night if you can do away with the tarp is just amazing. Nothing like being rocked to sleep in a hammock with an clear view of the tree tops and stars.

Exactly but might I add. In a tent you only have 1 exit but an animal could tear right through it. With a hammock settup, depending on how your settup (I've been doing this for 15 years) you can escape easier but also easier access for animals. So it's all up to comfortablility with nature.

You are correct about being able to see what's around better than being in a tent. Recently, someone 4:30 in the morning hit my tent with a flash light at several angles for about 20 minutes. It was cold out, I was in my long John's and was debating whether to jump out of my tent or not and confront this a-hole. My boots were outside the tent, etc... not sure if being in a hammock would've been better, but I would've been in a better position to assess the situation. P.S I think it was a hunter upset I was camping in a spot he had planned out, and decided to mess with me.

I like hammock camping when I am alone, but when it is with another person or the family, out comes the tents. We have a 4 person which we use if it's only 2 of us (I learned along time ago, a 2 person tent is actually made for 1 person plus gear), and for 3 or 4 or the family (7 of us, all adults) we use a family "cabin" style that supposedly sleeps 12. It's big, but it works. To find an area big enough for 7 hammocks, good luck. Either way, I look at it as either with a hammock, tent, or just a ground sheet and a tarp, as long as there is a cover over my head, I am happy just being out camping.

Good video I've been using a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock and really like it. Tip: Sew 550-cord loops on the bottom corners and center points for tent stakes and then 550-cord loops sewn on the ridge, this will let you set it up on the ground, with a ground sheet and a tarp, which I use anyway.

I slept in a hammock for almost 7 months every night. It took a little while to figure out how to get a perfect lay to sleep completely comfortable. The swaying side to side can be difficult to GWT past . so add a trap clip to one side with a heavy bungie cord to slow the side to side motion it works . Pro tip .get a double hammock you have a bit more room in the shoulders. Temperature below70 use a underquilt .Because the cool night air will pull the heat from your body.

Of all the things I don't understand is the absolute tiny tarp so many youtubers seem to use when hammock camping. It does nothing against the wind. It slightly protects against the rain. But man... The rain here goes sideways. a few weeks ago I was hammock camping and a unexpected storm went through. I was really happy to have a sturdy tarp with loads of protection then. Put in the ear buds and pray that the tarp will hold until morning and go to sleep.

You brought very good point about the personal bubble. I was thinking of getting hammock tent for solo bikepacking trips but I'm VERY paranoid of my stuff getting stolen and I NEED to be able to "hide" everything in my tent. That way thieves don't know if it's even worth it NOR if I'm inside or not. But if anyone has good tips on "hiding" your stuff while hammock camping please tell me. These were really good. I would add a few more. 1. Your are likely to have the things you need to tent camp but to go hammock camping you may be investing in hammock, tarp, top quilt, under quilt, suspension system, ... it seems like more new things to buy. And since you are enclosed, you do not have the privacy for changing clothes.

Snakeskins, game changer for Hennessy. Put carabiners on the end of the ropes and there is a multiple loop strap replacing the Hennessy straps I got off Amazon. Faster setup than most all tents.
@RicMor200
@RicMor200 2 ай бұрын
Great video, thanks for putting it out. I realize it's a couple of years old, but the subject is still relevant. I own about 8 Hennessy Hammocks, which I mostly use as loaners. That said, I haven't slept in a Hennessy in many years. I think Hennessy is a workhorse of a hammock, but these days there are better options IMHO. So Hennessy is perhaps not the best for someone who's starting out hammocking. The suspension system is really rudimentary and not easy to dial in because you have to be tying and untying knots. The length of the hammock is short for comfort with a length of 10 feet on most of their mid range ones. If you want something longer, then you get a very heavy Hennessy, if you want something lighter, then you get one even shorter than 10 feet. Whereas the industry standard is 11 feet, and most other manufacturers use lighter fabrics. The other issue with Hennessy is the stock tarp. It gives you minimal coverage. So when setting up you really have no room for error, and if you're under a heavy downpour, you could get wet from the sides. Other manufacturers make very lightweight hexagonal tarps that offer more coverage. Hennessy makes hex tarps too, but those are sold separately and they're heavy for what they are. In the US a great entry-level brand is Hammock Gear, another one is Arrowhead Equipment. They can put together a set of hammock, tarp and insulation that's easy to understand and master quickly. Then once you've used your hammock and know what you like and don't like, you can move up at notch and get something more sophisticated from Dream Hammock, Dutchware, Warbonnet or UGQ Outdoor. With the gathered-end hammocks you sleep in a diagonal direction in comparison to the main axis of the hammock. Some people favor head left/ feet right, and others head right / feet left. You don't know what you prefer until you try sleeping in it several nights. Hennessy hammocks are configured to sleep in just one of those directions. So if you don't find it right for you, you might just give up and say that hammocks are uncomfortable. Another example is the tarp coverage. As mentioned above, the Hennessy stock tarps are minimal. So if you're someone who camps in places where rain is not a problem, and you like the view of your surroundings from the hammock, then the Hennessy tarp will be great for you. But if you like your privacy (for example if you're a woman and need more coverage to change your clothes) then you'll prefer a bigger tarp. Winter tarps can cover the entire hammock, and come almost all the way down to the ground. There are many other aspects about hammock camping that can be customized, and most manufacturers allow you to do that.

This looks like a good set up for motorcycles. Otherwise I have a six man quick cabin I love. For long term camping, I prefer a roomy tent, all my cooking gear, clothes, solar panels etc, even my cooler ( if bears aren't in area). I have a woods queen bed, feather pillows etc. I love camping, but at 68 years old, I need my comfort as well. My set gives me that. I've also bike camped but have a three man back pack tent thats very low grind tent, making me have to crawl in /out. For an old man, it's a pain, so I'm thinking going to a hammock instead. Thanks. Bike trips I don't cook anyway, all I need is a cheap place to sleep, this looks like it'll fill the bill.

i camped two times in a DD Frontline Hammock yet and i like it. it's actually very comfortable. but the first thing i noticed was, it can be a little fresh underneath at night, even when it's hot the whole day with 35 degrees celsius or above. but a summer sleeping bag or/and a cheap sleeping mat will help out. i must agree to it. i also felt a little vulnerable, because i thought, a fox or something like that could bite me in my butt. also, the rucksack cannot be stored inside the Hammock when i'm inside. but i don't bother too much, since i only camp in remote areas and the Rucksack with no objects of value inside can be hidden farer away over night underneath trees or other green stuff.

I find some tents to be quite oppressive - it's got to be at least a 3-person tent to get rid of the "walls are closing in on me" feeling. I much prefer the openness of hammock camping - I generally have the leeward side of the tarp raised up with sticks or hiking poles specifically so I can see out from within the hammock. I'm also too old for crawling about on the ground to get into and out of a tent. I have to stoop a bit, but I can _walk_ under my tarp, sit down on the hammock, make and drink my coffee then swing my feet up and lie down to rest.

You also called their lashing system "complicated". I know virtually nothing about knots (though lashing technically isn't a knot), I did the lashing successfully the first time i tried it! I feel like when it comes to the point of a hammock being more exposed, what he's saying isn't necessarily true. First off, I always felt more exposed in tents. I was always listening for things dropping on the rain fly, or crawling over it. There's just something about not seeing what is approaching a tent, that makes the thin walls seem thinner. I'd worry about the strength of the poles, and animals coming up suddenly on my tent with me inside, stuck. It's not a universal fear, or anything, but there it is. This guy has a pretty minimalist tarp set-up on his hammock, but the great thing about having a bigger tarp, especially something with doors, is that you can spread out, while feeling pretty protected, and enclosed. Things could still be under you, but in a way, that highlights what isn't reaching you. Water, for example. A tarp can be pitched high enough to comfortably walk under, and a ways off the hammock. It doesn't need to be in your face. Then you start dialing in where your gear is going to be. You can get your backpack, and everything you own off the ground. whether it's lines, or organizing tools, or gear lofts, there's something to do what you want it to do. The options can be overwhelming, but hanging your pack at one end of your hammock should be feasible, if not ideal, for most people. (Definitely have a ridgeline on your hammock if you do that.) You can set up lines to hang drying clothes. If you really need to, and you don't mind carrying a bit more, Sierra Madre Research makes tarp systems that include bug nets, and gear lofts, so if you want to be reasonably sure that no bugs are getting into your gear, you can have that piece of mind. Skimping on the tarp is a way to knock a little weight and bulk off a backpacking set-up. However, I have the Ninox fly, and the Ninox flatlay hammock, and out of the two pieces of kit, I'd rather keep the fly, and pick up a slightly smaller camping hammock, if I had to choose. Dutchware and Warbonnet are both great places to start looking at gear, especially Dutchware for the modularity. If you're worried about going to ground, there are a few options. But, for the sake of a very interesting argument, I'd look at Tensa Outdoors. If there's one thing that I think makes a hammock set-up feel just so much more in its own world, than a tent, it's realizing that the ground has absolutely nothing to do with how well you'll sleep. (Except creating a micro-climate affecting the temperature, and sometimes, the moisture, for example, camping in a valley.) How many times tent camping have you bedded down on a slight incline, and it has become the central thing you manage all night? Or you go to find a good spot to pitch, and you come to find out, there are only a few suitable sites, each with their own challenges to be managed all night, or as weather changes the conditions? Hammock set-up comes with a pretty significant challenge of finding two trees a suitable distance apart, but in the forest, with the right suspension options, and practice, there are just so many options, compared to the standard, barely passable, tent sites. Desert and snow are their own challenges of course, but there's nothing like taking a look at dubious ground, and pulling out your hammock with a smile on your face, because you brought your own cocoon. And since I haven't mentioned it outright, there exists a hybrid/convertible hammock stand that converts to trekking poles. Tensa sells them. How cool is that?

@@magoo4452 I use a paracord hammock.. For an under quilt I use a cheap 2m x 1m tarp and tie it on hanging loose enough to trap a layer of air and made a small condensation drainage hole centre bottom. The undrquilt can be stuffed with any insulating material in winter. I use 2 side by side ridge lines separated by wood braces with notched grooves and a 3rd ridge line above to create a traditional loft/attic space. The braces and ridgelines can all be used to hang useful items I keep to hand and once I fit my tarp I can use the tension between the tarp and ridge lines at the sides to slide items such as tobacco, lighter and other lightweight stuff. I hang damp socks to dry from ridge lines etc. Kit bag either stowed in ceiling space supported by the roof braces or emptied of valuables and hung from hammock (climbing) karabiner at head or foot end Small kit bags and keys/knives/torches etc all hung from s hooks/karibiners on braces or ridge lines.. (even a whole big full kit bag can fit along top of strong wooden braces if needs be.) I hang thin wool blankets from the side ridge lines for extra breathable insulation and to create privacy and insect protection I also hang water bottles by their top lip just by wedging it up in the outside of hammock strings near top on the outside. It is a v homely setup! I prefer it to my king-size bed to my neighbours bafflement and my wife's pleasure!) I enjoy this as my year round man cave in the back garden with a sleeping bag to lie on or in and dont feel the knots or cold without need for anything else to lie on. (Additional wool blankets on top if sub zero) Cushion/pillows hold themselves in place by poking corners through string hammock holes. I use a thin travel pillow for lower back, a cushion under knees, a few travel pillows under/around head. Bliss!

Hang a sturdy ridgeline, snap some 'biners on it and hang up not just your pack but also your shoes lantern hydration pack etc. All within easy reach.

Using two rings per end is much easier than knots. You use them like a cinch buckle.

If you want more privacy in your setup try using a tarp with doors. They are a little heavier but stop wind and snow from blowing under your tarp. All people can see are your feet 😊

actually it is that simple because you have to do most of the same stuff with a tent lol, correct knots for tent tie downs angle of the tent stakes. oh and they do make hammock tents so you have the space inside for chairs onetigris make them

I am a side sleeper. Would a hammock be a problem?
@TheJATMaster

You can sleep at an angle, but truly sleeping on your side is pretty awkward in a hammock. That said, I'm also a side sleeper (and often times a front sleeper, but it's a bad habit I'm trying to break) but the curvature of the hammock is so comfortable for sleeping on my back. I'm pretty tall, and sleeping on my back in a normal bed hurts my back if I don't have pillows under my knees. Sleeping on my back in a hammock, however, is such an amazing experience. I wake up feeling like my spine has been realigned!

There is not really much of a learning curve, if you are starting out, get an ENO kit, it is stupid simple, cheap and no need to know any knots. I live in Montana and have hammock camped in various different weather conditions using a simple ENO setup without any problem. If you want to feel enclosed, just put a blanket over the ridgeline, I use a Rumpl down blanket for this.

I just don't understand this "tarp only" religion. Why can't one have a tent over the hammock for privacy? The tarp itself could just be a little bigger and that's all you need to have the best of both worlds. I think people are making way too big of a deal about the weight difference. a tarp that is twice the size is NOT going to add that much weight to the backpack and the privacy is well worth it. I plan to go camping in the Sawtooth mountains in a month and look forward to doing just that. Use a ridgeline rope to hole up a tarp over my setup that is big enough to act as an actual tent. I want my personal space and I want my sleeping comfort too. I can skimp on something else.

I have a 10 x 13 door Aquaquest tarp, weighs 2 pounds. I can put it over my hammock so I can stand up under it but it reaches the ground on both sides. If the weather turns to crap I can pinch the ends closed. I use it every season but where I camp there are always trees so it's never an issue. I'm not a through hiker, just get away for a weekend but I greatly prefer a tarp. Even in a downpour I can sit back, cook, do whatever.

Such lame things to complain about. You can't say you buy a tent and don't struggle understanding how to set it up every time without the layout diagram? Hammocks are way safer than tents. You can hang it above and between where anything can reach you and because they're not on the ground, way more waterproof. You don't worry about a river flowing into your tent

“More Comfortable” than a tent?? And you have back pain? A person with a bad back will sleep better on a curved surface rather than on the straight bed-like floor of a tent? That may be for you, but it makes almost 0 sense, and it’s TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE

Yeah, I guess a person could find some kind of issue with anything. You had to get over the idea of maybe a deer licking your face? Or an animal running under your hammock? REALLY?! Maybe stay home where you can be sure you're safe and snuggly warm with nothing new or different! Ya weirdo!

First no you don’t need knots get Python straps easier and better for the tree, yes it’s way superior in comfort. Once you learn how to set up it’s easier than a tent and you don’t have to look for a flat spot and remove pine cones, rocks, branches, ant hills etc. you can also hang/ attach items from the ridge line I hang my hand gun from it. You can stand under the tarp to dress not in a tent. You will never wake up in a puddle of water. Less equipment no ground cloth, no ground cloth, no poles, no sleeping pad. My experience, and it’s extensive, I will never go back to tent backpacking.
