I was really intrigued by the story plot so I read the manga, it explains everything better. Hatter didn’t wanted to go back to the “real” world but it is an illusion he created to give a purpose to those that wondered around the borderland without hope and not knowing what to do. At the end in the Netflix version, they showed him like a mad guy who believed his own lie but in reality in the manga he was acting like that because he was slowing losing himself to a role that he didn’t want anymore. In fact Agnis realized that he wasn’t mad when they confronted each other and Agnis killed him, when he check the bullets of Hatters pistol (it was empty), so apologized for killing him because he didn’t realized that Hatter didn’t wanted to play that role for much longer

While watching the series I thought that collecting the cards isn't a guarantee to leave Borderland but instead, Hatter's way of keeping the peace. I was never sure if the card thing would actually work....When I look at the Gamemaster, I still don't really believe this could work😂

But is he really keeping the peace.. it seems like the armed guards make people toe the line and not the cards. And why cards? For an individual the chance of escape is unimaginable. But as a group? Well there is your brief glimmer of hope

@@leoh1191 isn't that how peace is maintained in the real world too..the government gives people common goals that everyone must achieve for a 'successful, fullfiling life' education, career, family, friends, fun etc etc...all the while keeping the wayward ones in line through the military, police, etc.. 'death to traitors' is also not far from the reality of a lot of societies

@@leoh1191 You have an interesting theory. I like it, bc it's more hopeful than my theory😂. My theory was that the cards are just a symbol of the game. I've seen you in these comments before good sir so i know you've probably watched the ending with the lady (don't remember her name but she is CRAZY AF). But i believe that the game masters made this game to show people the true nature of themselves. She was happy that the people had all killed for her. I believe this is a sick game made by the game masters to bring out the worst in people. I don't believe there's an end to it. You just keep playing games and keep going further down the rabbit hole. Hatter is a classic narcissist. Delusions of grandeur, charming personality, he even has the trademark narcissistic rage as shown when people would dare defy him. All his actions were made in an attempt to prop up his own insecure ego, whether it was keeping up the charade of hope, or killing off members of The Beach when they dared undermine HIS institution by keeping their cards. What a deep and well-written character indeed.

Love this deep dive on hatter! I do adore him and admire his character for holding his head high in a completely hopeless and inexplicable situation. I also very much agree that he had a hero complex and was a bit unhinged from the start, and in his own twisted mind's logic, he was doing something good. There's definitely no clear way too judge someone like him, because hes wired differently than your typical, sane person. I cant say i 100% feel that he has absolutely no empathy and is completely self serving, though i do think hes selfish by nature. Idk if that makes sense, really, because perhaps I'm just an overly optimistic person. Ive been guilty of refusing to acknowledge peoples faults and malicious intentions because i want to see the good in everyone. So its complicated, but nonetheless, hatter's story is tragic however you interpret him. I thought this was a fantastic video! And your last note on Kuina was beautiful ❤

I don’t think hatter was always insane. I haven’t read the manga but even within the series Aguni’s very devoted friendship to him wouldn’t make sense. He kept madmen like the militants in check but was unwilling to, or couldn’t, police hatter. He indiscriminately had the residents of the beach killed for turning him mad, and I don’t think that came from a lack of understanding of Hatter’s true sanity in the real world. The guilt he carries over accidentally killing Hatter is the one thing capable of actually destroying him, and we know that killing, even when his own friends die, doesn’t haunt him to the lint that he violently invokes his own killing. Agonist clearly knew Hatter in a way that we would never get to. I think really Hatter projected his own fear, desire, and hope onto others. That by giving others purpose and the will to live he found his own, but was swayed by the fantasy of the delusion he created. I mean of course he viewed himself as a deity, he was surrounded by desperate people who not only believed him to be a hero, but willed him to be. The initial creation of the beach though, I think was born out of his own need for purpose, not some deep insanity.

My theory: Have you ever wondered why the gamers would allow the beach to exist in the first place. It literally is like using a cheat code. I'm thinking this is like the matrix when neo finds out he's been through the same scenario multiple times already. So im thinking the game operates in cycles. Obviously in the beginning it's cut throat. But players evolve and realise the best chance of survival is working together,sharing info,forming a collective. Getting the best and brightest into one group. I feel the beach has always been part of the game..it helps the players grow,survive,cooperate.. And when it gets too powerful or too close to the truth... The gamers make the beach a game site.. And they resort back to being cut throat. A good majority of the beach are slaughtered and the cycle begins again. Perhaps hatter was a gamer himself and oversaw the " construction" of the collective time and time again.

I think our host may be wrong on this one. 1.The beach must have over 200 plus members. 2.They must play the game every 4 days or so. 3. The members are obviously skilled..or atleast the upper crust of the group because none of the main/ minor characters died in the games. 4. You win..you get a card 5. Ergo the beach wins alot and must have multiple stacks of cards 6. But are missing some because they arent in play( k,q,j) or havent turned up in the games yet. 7. There are 52 cards in a deck..certain cards are held back..k,q,jx4 suits...minus a few not in the game yet and you have maybe 36-38 cards available to find with a group of 200 strong doing this every 4th day.. Yep your gonna have stacks upon stacks of cards. 8. So what cards are the beach winning after each successful round..? 9. Duplicates of duplicates of duplicates. Our host is making the assumption that the leader is a dictator/ cult leader/ selfish prick/ someone using your slave labor to help him escape.. based on what evidence? A small stack on cards in a safe? Most likely hatters personal stack. The beach would have tons and tons of duplicate cards. So yes it is possible for more than hatter to escape. The show never said cards are rare, hatter said they havent shown up in the game yet. He hasnt found them. You see the beach as a cult. I tend to see it more of a frat house. The leader,the best and brightest should get first chance of escaping because they figured out how to win. It's like when frats keep test and then hand them down to their pledges. Most likely hatter/ the beach kept alot of these idiots alive.. Notice how our hero is promoted to the big table when he passed the test/ had a rare card. Seems like all in the upper group are survivors. The rest are grinders that most likely would be dead without people like hatter to give them info on how to win the games Our host assumes hatter is using people for his own escape and it is nearly impossible for you to follow him Huh? There would be so many duplicate cards that each member would have a stack..and in all honesty your stack probably is 1 or 2 cards shy of hatter's stack. So alot of folks could escape if certain cards suddenly turned up at the games in bulk. We need to rethink the hatter. It's hard to believe that lil stack in the safe accounts for all the beaches cards. Therefore we think the hatter is keeping all the cards for himself. Like i said the beach wins..there would be tons of dupes just based on the numbers in the group. The gamers assumption is you'll never survive long enough to get all the cards. Yeah as an individual you wont. But as a group grinding together the pot of duplicate cards grows. It gets passed down the food chain as members die. So you could join the beach as a newbie and be given 20 cards easily. Obviously cards can be given away or taken from you. The beach is actually a good strategy
@GenerationOchi
@GenerationOchi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comment. It's kind of hard to respond to because though it purports at the start to argue against claims I've made, it doesn't seem to do that. I'm not assessing whether or not staying at the beach is a "good strategy" or not. I would need to do a whole separate video analyzing that issue in depth to come to a conclusion there. And I would never make such an assumption without thinking deeply about the question first. I certainly did not rule out that being at the Beach is better than being outside of it. Just because people at the Beach live under tyrannical rule - which is definitionally true, doesn't mean that leaving the Beach would be better or make it easier for them to escape Borderland. Two things can be true, it can be both better to stay at the Beach and Hatter can be using the people there for his scheme. This is why your write-up, with respect, is somewhat of a straw man that doesn't disprove anything. The relative easiness or difficulty of collecting cards also seems irrelevant to me. Hatter makes the point himself that he thinks it's impossible for one person to collect all of the cards. That may be false, but clearly he thinks he needs the help of the Beach members to get all of them himself. And certainly it would be easier to collect all of the cards with help than without. This all said, I never said that it's impossible for someone to get out of Borderland without the Beach, I said that that's what Hatter said. And I definitely didn't say that no one at the Beach would ever get out of Borderland after Hatter. Though, the Beach did collapse quickly after his death. But most importantly, I did NOT conclude in the end that Hatter was using people for a scheme that would allow him to escape Borderland. Did you watch until the end? I very clearly stated that I think that the only thing he cared about was his image in the eyes of his followers. He wanted to be a hero - something he says out loud a few times in the show. I don't think he really was trying to trick anyone - I think he truly believed in his own magnificence, he believed in the sanctity of the Beach, he believed his leadership made people better. I state something to this effect in the video. Thanks for chiming in though. Much love.

@@GenerationOchi But you did make the assertion that hatter is basically a cult like figure and that his assertion that others would follow is flawed. I tried to give you a different way of looking at the story based on the available cards to any player. Despite what is shown on the program there is no way the beaches sole collection would be that 1 pack. Thus most people at the beach would have the same multiple pack of duplicate cards from winning. Logic would dictate hatter may have any cards that werent readily available in the game. Say some rando stumbles on it by accident. But your stack and his stack would be damn close in terms of completion. And when these cards do appear in the game chances are they wont be rare.. Im just saying i dont see hatter in selfish terms..especially if the group does win tons of cards

I've got to stop rewatching these videos waiting anxiously for season 2!! That said, Hatter is an argument in opposition of the theory that wanting to return to the real world is a sign of maintained humanity. I think he's a stand-in for a few outliers that would fall into that "mad" heading. A narcissist or even a true (non-violent) psychopath dragged into Borderland could desperately want to return to the real world b/c anyone having power over them is so anathema that they'll fight like crazy to return to what they can accept.

My thoughts: the cards are worthless. And you as a participant were never supposed to figure this out. Why? The gamers never though contestant would bond together and form a collective.. Obvious Hatter knew the beaches combined sum of cards were duplicates of duplicates of duplicates... And that the chances of anyone leaving were slim to none. So why the cards then? Well you still play the lottery despite the actual chance of winning.. Why? It gives you hope. I honestly think there is no escape. You play till your dead.

Old video but I hadn't properly commented yet so let's do it now 😂 You say Hatter is selfish and megalomaniac and while I agree I also think that's a subproduct of everything he went through. What I mean is, imo, he starts of as seeing this new world as an utopia (I believe that's where his mind is at in the scene with Aguni when he talks about creating the beach). But, as with every utopia worthy of that name, it starts to crumble and in his desperation to have a second chance, he can't cope and his psyche breaks (when he kills the people that hide their cards). Only then his selfish side that doesn't care about others lives emerges as a defense/coping mechanism of sorts for his destroyed dream. Maybe I'm being too naive or I totally misunderstood the time line but yeah, I think he saw new Tokyo as a second chance from the club he used to work at and he truly believed his vision could work. All until human selfishness shattered his dream and made him mad. Sorry for the huge post, but I really love how the characters have so much to pick apart and so many details to speculate about. Great work, mister Ben! 😊❤️

Hatter actually had no interest in leaving himself he also wasn't sure weather collecting all the cards would do anything but he knew it gave a purpose and meaning to all those other players it gave them all a reason to keep going to work together and actually try to build a life for them self's within the borderlands instead of simply just existing because they are to scared to off then self's, he had to protend that he wanted to leave in order to keep things running smoothly as well yea if the founder of the group showed that he had no interest in leaving or that he wasnt sure if his plan would even work that would make it hard for people to be inspired by him and would then start to question his true purpose thus he had to act as if he had faith in him self and that his intentions were to create a system where everyone would help each other to escape 1 by 1 Hatter went mad for multiple reasons 1 he felt guilty for lying to everyone as he actually had no clue weather the cards did anything, he felt guilty and remorse for the fact that so many people died or were willing to die in order to get these cards witch again may or may not have done anything 2 he felt angry and guilty for creating a wedge between his friendship with aguni, his and aguni were best friends before this whole thing happen yet after they founded the beach a divide started to happen hatter wanted to create a place where there were no rules and every one could come have a good time forgetting about the bad situation they was in he wanted to help people enjoy their life's and not feel lost he wanted to give people hope that there was a way out and that every one was an equal part of this, where as aguni and the military core didn't agree on this, the military core wanted to put aguni in charge so that they could rule with an iron first where the strong would survive and the weak would be fazed out they wanted the weaker people to act as sacrifices in the games so that the strong would survive, they wanted the weaker people to work and do things around the beach that would make the stronger people's life's more easier Hatter didn't like the this he saw a massive divide in the people wanted hatter in charge others wanted aguni and the military core, but he aslo saw a divided in their friendship he didn't like how aguni wanted to run things and felt like he couldn't trust him he felt their friendship braking away as he felt like the military core would try to take over by force thus to prevent it from happening he essentially down graded aguni and put some random in 2nd command, witch obviously pissed off aguni and the military core as they felt that was a sigh of disrapect that the divide between their friendship broke apart even more He hated the fact that their friendship was being destroyed because of the beach and the games this caused him alot of stress and emotional distress, he also was on edge because he feard that at any second the whole thing could go south if the military core decided they wanted to take over ie he knew they had all the fire power and the people to take over if they wanted to or they could just wait for him to join a game and off him without anyone knowing, he knew there would be nothing he could have done to stop it if they wanted to take over he was powerless and in the prosses so many more people who essentially gave their life's to him because of his lies would die for no real reason, all of these things + all the sleepless nights and binging on alcohol constantly slowly caused him to have mental brake downs in witch we see as moments of madness

Pointless point: Aguni's name sound like "agony" in both english and portuguese

Not pointless at all. I didn't realize that. Maybe the writer didn't intend for his name to sound like "agony" but sometimes meaningful things happen coincidentally. Thanks for your comment. 😊

I seem to have remembered this wrong… I thought Hatter was shot because he was in a heart’s game? Not a game made obvious but his visa was up, a random game message got skipped over unexplained and then we see the end of that game later

Giving people a main goal to do grants them hope and a small purpose in a world that is chaos can drive people forward. Not to mention everyone in borderlands has the mentality of because it called a game there must be winners and losers.

The very first time I realized he was called hatter, I thought he would be mad. In the real alice in wonderland, there is only a mad hatter. So I figured that he was mad, the first time he was called hatter
