The Truth About Japan's New Type-10 Tank

Is Japans new TYPE-10 Main Battle tank really under armored or is it actually amazing? As Japan moves to meet their massive military rearmament goal to double their defense budget, all eyes are turning to their own homemade Mitsubishi Type 10 main battle tank with its bling bling nano crystal Japanese steel armor. That might actually explain why it’s the world’s second most expensive tank ever produced at $9.8 million dollars per unit.
The first prototype for the new Japanese tank rolled off the Mitsubishi production line in 2006. The Type 10 has three separate weight loadouts to give the Japanese military more flexibility in how the tank is transported and deployed. The minimum loadout comes in at just 40 tons, which is much easier on Japan’s infrastructure and allows the tank to use 84% of their 17,920 total bridges in the country while most other Western designs could barely use 40%

Like that star free agent who leaves your organization for a rival's, if you can't afford to keep the tank builders occupied, who will be recruiting them?

Tanks in swedish doctrine is not for them to make rapid offensive maneuvers but to make use of prepared defensive protected positions while mechanized infantry outmanuvers the attacking force. Sweden is a dream for prepared ambushes an advancing force trying to push threw swedich terrain would have to be ready for an attack from any forest line.

Isoroku Yamamoto was an influentual Japanese admiral who was instrumental in developing the naval airforce and its use of carriers and also was the architect of the plan for the attack on Pearl Harbor. The battle ship with those biggest of all guns was the YAMATO. It means Spirit of the Nation. YAMAMOTO was the name of the Admiral, who before planning the Pearl Harbor attack, told the Japanese political leadership that Japan would definitely lose a war with the U.S. He lived in America for a few years, toured extensively, and knew well our industrial capability.

Unlike Israel, Japanese tanks focus on direct tank warfare. Most of the country is mountainous and covered with trees, and annual precipitation, including snowfall, is enormous. Because of this, Japanese rivers flow extremely fast, and there are many bridges to cross them, so the invasion routes are very limited. For these reasons, land defense in mainland Japan is based on ambush tactics using concealed tanks. This is fatal to the Merkava, whose heat-source engines are located in the front. Even if the vehicle body, which is the heat source, is concealed, the angle of fire is limited by the angle of elevation and tilt, so a mechanism to control the posture of the vehicle itself is inevitably required. The Merkava is undoubtedly an excellent tank. However, it is not suitable for the Japanese operational concept of tanks.

Another reason it was better to develop a tank at home is weight restrictions. Most if not all modern mbts they would consider buying are too heavy so theyd have to buy lighter, older tanks which would reduce the performance potential of their tank forces.

Modern MBTs are too heavy for much of the infrastructure in most countries, including the US. There are many American roads and bridges the Abrams cannot use.

And even if there was to be flat land it would be preoccupied by cities and towns, meaning that tanks fighting in japan will be 100% going through mountainous terrain. Japan is also about 90% mountainous which significantly influences defense as well. There was a third giant Japanese battleship laid down, but it was finished as an aircraft carrier. It was sunk while manned by a skeleton crew during sea trials by USS Archerfish.

Military circles in Japan refer to type 10 as a 'fighter jet-like MBT'. This aptly describes type 10's operational doctrine - 'First Look, First Kill' supported by the C4 network, short combat radius and required frequent maintenance at base. I've heard from multiple Japanese speakers that it's actually translated as microcrystal steel and it just means the particles themselves in the steel are way smaller making it stronger and giving a couple other benefits

@@briancavanagh7048 I dont believe so. Used similar in making a blade. Normally its how many blades does one belt make. With the "powered iron" its how many belts does it take to make one blade. If I remember the lecture its powdered by the molten "standard" steel mix being sprayed through a tiny nozzle into a chamber. As the molten steel is ejected the chamber temperature rapidly cools the grains form. Smaller the injection port and faster the cooling the smaller the grains. (or as I recall). Then you take this dust and forge that into a billet. As the temperature for forging is not melting the steel has a lot of tiny crystals that interlock rather that larger metal crystals in molten steel. Weakness of steel is between the crystal faces. But this is all from faulty memory.

Great job, Cappy! Right up to that Yamamoto thing. There was supposed to be a third Yamato class beast out there until they decided Carriers were what was more important. The largest of WWII, the IJN Shinano, lasted about 10 days before resting in Davy Jones locker. Type 10 outweighs my Mitsubishi by at least 42 tons. No, wait a minute, my Mitsubishi was a Dodge. Nevermind. You know, if they built those in the States, they could probably save about $3 million per. I mean, everything costs more in Japan, right? My biggest hope is that we don't have to find out how good they are. Aim high.

Theres a steel manufacturing method called CPM (Crucible Powder Metallurgy) thats used to make steels harder and more durable even though they use the same chemistry as already existing steels, it does this by making the grain size smaller. I suspect this is not much different of a concept.

I always laugh when I hear someone mention "High Quality Japanese steel as if its a Great quality" They do Have Excellent Manufacturing process though as they have to to use their poor quality steel.

U can make crucible steel in your back yard with iron, bone ash, clay, and hand made bellows. Rare hi quality swords were made this way as far back as the 8 or 900’s a.d. “Ulfberht” was a popular maker - who’s mark was often counterfeited because people could t figure out how he was making “iron” swords what were not break brittle, and therefore would not break when struck too hard, but flex, making a whipping sound when swung, the metal obviously being what we know as steel. Steel is just iron + carbon. A crucible was the easiest way to heat the materials to proper temp. Maybe the only way back then, I don’t know. But I’m sure whatever Japan is doing to create steel in 2023 that has qualities no one else can match, is far from making steel in a crucible.

It's Mitsubishi, they already made a number of large 20+ litre engines for their Fuso range. It's not a huge engineering challenge to leverage that to create a tank engine if you toss out the requirement of low fuel consumption in favor of massive power.

Tank engines have little civilian application, so it is a major investment for what is ultimately an engine with limited sales potential given Japans restrictions on export weapons sales.

The K2 does NOT have better performance than the Type 10. It has the same forward speed, a significantly slower reverse speed, the same power/weight ratio, a less versatile transmission, only slightly more horsepower (which is offset by its greater mass), and a smaller operational range. Also, the K2's main cannon is similar to the 120mm Rheinmetall cannon that the JDF rejected. That said, Taiwan might still want to go for the K2 rather than the Type 10, since Japan's strict arms export laws would make acquiring the Type 10 very difficult.

There really is only a 30 meter per sec difference between apfsds velocities on the main guns. Plus the Type 10 Apfsds has 36 milimeters less pentration performance than nato DM 53 at 500 metres. So i have no idea how one could say the only Domestically designed round on the Type 10 the Apfsds is somehow by default better than anything NATO has.

@@scantrontheimmortal 1) The L/44 is not used on the Type 10, making that comparison moot. 2) Japan has not published the stats on the Type 10's armour penetration, so the reliability of your source is highly suspect. 3) What the JDF has said is that the Type 10 round has similar penetration to the DM53. They also claim that the round is better at penetrating reactive armour (though that isn't much of an issue for any NATO 120mm round, to be honest). 4) The Type 10 can fire any NATO standard 120mm rounds. How those rounds perform when fired by the Type 10 is unclear.

From what i know about the Type 10, for it's weight and for it's size, it is a pretty good MBT, people really don't look into it that much due to the Abrams and Leopard 2 being the most famous MBTs, but that is just my opinion, i like Japanese military vehicles so it could just be bias.

The Type 10 is meant to replace the Type 74, SUPPLEMENT the Type 90. The Nanocrystal steel isn't as outlandish as the name might sound. Basically, the nanocrystal steel grain structure is far more smaller and arranged much better than traditional steels. This allows the bonds between the grains of the steel to have a stronger hold thus making the steel stronger while retaining the same weight.

Side armor is always important. If you get the enemy on the run you will need to go on the offensive. A few grunts with ATGM’s could take out a bunch of your tanks from the sides.

I would never put a few grunts with ATGM's that has no top-attack capabilities. A side attack means you need to be close enough to easily get killed by their grunts. Mark 10 is not Russian T-72 that goes unsupported toward the frontlines let alone in the number of 3.

@@useodyseeorbitchute9450 Im guessing Japan sees their defence, especially against China as an 'all or nothing' deal, so tanks are a mobile force to oppose landings, having the advantage of not needing proper static positions that can be mapped by enemy in advance, but enough punch and armour to go head to head against anything landing, if that fails Japan knows it has nowhere to fallback to, so a very limited role in a movement sense other than getting to location needed fast. Also sounds like they are waiting for their active defence to reach readiness rather than adding more armour to sides/top, which may be a smarter long term move depending on how far they are from finishing it.

@@Farweasel I dont think any tank is able to take on an additional armor on top of the turret. It's a large surface to cover. Type 10 seem to have an up-armoring option. Aplique set of sorts. It's nice to look at fast agile tank when it flexes on training grouds. But the reality is called "battle ready" - an ad-on armor is placed. Means tank gets 2 to 6 tonnes heavier. Very expensive but for now single solution is the "hard-kill" Active Protection System like Trophy or Iron Fist. Other option rarely mentioned yet effective (if it was serviced and works) is the APS of "soft-kill" type. On the PT-91 tank it formed a set of systems. Starting from automatic pop of the smoke screen when the laser radiation detection system is triggered, e.g. with a rangefinder. Obviously its not a regular smoke. Another effective system is the gunshot direction and distance detection. In this case, the grenade fired from the bank is not a smoke, but a combat grenade against manpower. Notice how many launchers this tank has on the turret. Now you know why he has so much. Not many ppl know that meticulousness and economy in the disposal of the tank's weight resembles that of the aviation industry. It's not like a certain type of tank can take on some extra unforeseen 2 tons of weight without affecting the capability or durability of the structure. The PT-91 is wider, packed with stuff and more heavily armored, and the more powerful Polish engine is barely enough to make up for the loss of mobility.

7:10 the Japan Steel Works L/44 120mm gun is the same length as the one on the M1A1/M1A2 and Leopard 2A5 and older. The L/55 is on Leopard 2A6 and newer.

From what I can see even the Abrans M1A2 SEPV3 is "only" using the M256 (Rh-120 L/44) M256E1 is the Rh-120 L/55 but not in use on any version of M1A2 it seems. Only production tanks is Leopard 2A6 and later uses Rh-120 L/55 Newest version of this gun Rh-120 L/55 A1 (entered service 2018) And has a design pressure 760 MPa

Type 10 needs a hard kill active protection system. Should be able to add Trophy or something similar in place of part of the modular armor options. Final weight would be perhaps around 45-50 tons. Still quite light for a main battle tank.

High hardness steel is good for tank armor when it’s used in conjunction with other materials, typically some sort of ceramic, fiberglass, rubber, or softer metal. While 3 times the hardness of steel is great, how brittle is it? I wouldn’t necessarily think to put your potentially most brittle layer as the last line of defense. I’d much rather have a bulge in the last plate that having it shatter or crack.

IMO the biggest reason Japan wants to build their own MBT is because in a hypothetical war with China they do not want supply of tank guns and parts to be blockade-able. Producing tanks in country also lets them position themselves to more easily turn to a total war footing if they need to.

Poles use the same method. They have no modern stabilizers in the PT-91ones that would allow to accurate 1500m shot while on the move. And even though I know that their level of training would allow them to shoot accurately on the move, they themselves maintain the highest professionalism and do not rely on tricks that give a "probable" hit. They go for a certain hit paid for by stopping the vehicle for 3 seconds.
