Agreed! When I first started out, I thought I had to have these thought-out spreads with complicated illustrations. Over time and with my teaching schedule, I scaled it back to be something easier to read and more likely for me to open the journal again. I keep my tasks for the day and reflections on lessons and classes.

Holy cow, I have been journaling for YEARS but almost gave it up because I was trying to keep up with the Pinterest level bullet journaling and I HATED keeping lists on journals that I couldn't move around or edit as easily. I would lose my lists and trackers and all the fun things on the daily to do list mania. But your video reminded me that I had an amazing (for me) system in school - a master planner where I would reverse engineer due dates (I'd make sure to schedule rough drafts or sections as soon as I knew the date), separate binders for each subject, and a color coded wall calendar. I realized I needed a master planner but something I could edit easily so that's online! Then I have a paper planner where I categorize my to do list by subject. It's like, one thing filters into another and then feeds back up to the mother ship. Thanks for the encouragement to continue my weird process!

Love your menu analogy and keep it simple strategy! My advice for newbies is not to buy anything fancy at the start and use what you already have lying around- any pen/pencil and any paper/notebook/old diary and try something for a month and see if you like it or not. I started with a vertical monthly and todo list like yours, then tried 2pg monthly spread, then added a habit tracker etc. I’m still experimenting with weekly or monthly todos.

Then 2023 I went back to simple and trimmed it even more. Typically, 4 pages a month. I can get usually two and half years in one book!!!!!! Depending on additional collections that is.

Just discovered this channel, and loved, not only the content which was funny and good advice, but love the aesthetics of the stickers, a sort of 80's skateboard / surf era (at least in my eyes). I have kept things simple, and that to me means everything pre-dated ; don't have the time to date anything. I have a journal for work, that stays at work. My schedule, tasks, and priorities can change from day to day, even hour to hour, as I work in hospitality. It's not perfect yet, as I still need to have a better way on how to track the tasks I delegate to my staff. For the rest of my life, I am a Traveler's notebook gal, in passport size. Small, efficient, can't get lost in all the blank pages my brain would want to fill up. One insert for the months to visually see what awaits me, one insert for the weeks each day separated in 2 : 1 small side for appointments and the other side for the goals/tasks of the day. The last insert, a brain dump : grocery lists, ideas, recommendations (movies, reading etc...). Finally, and this is new, a standard Traveler's notebook in which I journal anything relevant or impactful that happened to me. One page max of writing, so that I don't lose myself in the details, and a doodle or stamp. This is more to record my life. Stickers are great, but I like stamps better. I find them to be more cost-efficient, as they can be used over and over again.

So glad I stumbled on this vid. There are just far too many YT vids showing hauls and x number of planners but most of them don't either know how to use all the planners or will just wing it. I've always been an advocate of having a serious talk with yourself to know what you need in a planner/journal and use a system that addresses your pain points and goals. Not a lot of planner YTubers do this.

I just realised I have shelves full of dishes going back years and a menu about as long as santa's naughty/nice list. 😂 I hope that dog getting PT feels better soon. 😊 Last comment: keeping work and personal life separate can be a necessary boundary. Satellite notebooks can be a useful addition to any planning system, used on the go in purses or pockets to note things that need to be captured when the main journal(s) aren't around. My 25 cents, adjusted for inflation. You are amazing. ❤

Thanks for another awesome video 👍👍 I’ve been journaling since grade school (about 30 years now 😅) and my system changes over time. My most consistent practice is to write a few pages a week to reflect and remember my days. When I noticed I was venting a lot, I realized I didn’t necessarily want to keep those entries forever. I decided to separate my memory keeping journal from my “ranting and raving” journal, and another notebook for daily logging when I want to bullet-note what I did but don’t have the time or energy for longer-form writing. I keep one planner a year for both my work and personal schedules and tasks, and have separate notebooks that can go on for years (list of movies and books I’ve read, expense tracker, spiritual journal, commonplace book for quotes and wisdom). I think what’s important is to find joy in our journaling time, do what works best, and allow ourselves to change systems when needed. We go through many changes throughout life so our journaling habit would reflect and should support that. Thank you and world peace + inner peace to conclude this long comment ☮️

i always love watching your bullet journal videos. at a surface level, our styles are like fire and water. you keep it simple, and mine is quite complex (bullet journal is PURELY for task management, google calendar for time management, obsidian for note taking and thought capturing, routinary for well, routines). But somehow, I see myself reflected in HOW you approach things, its a simple problem -> solution process. You're really the only bullet journaller that I find myself relating too. Regarding having separate journals for work and personal, its also a lot about you as a person. I know for a fact that I can't maintain two separate journals, so for me, the solution is to a) separate my recording of memories and diary entries into its own thing and b) Use ambiguous language for any task that could like, embarrass you if found in a work context You talking about your journey has made me so nostalgic, so forgive the short story. My systems been built over 7 years, and like you said, i started, so so so simply and purpose driven. I needed a overview of both this week and the coming week at a glance, i needed no space restrictions for the days to do list, and I had learnt the hard way that productivity apps don't work for me. Once I got that down, through some trial and error, and reading rider carrols book, I started to experiment a lot with all the different bujo things, collections, habit trackers, new years goals, all of that stuff, but I just simply could not keep up with using it for anything more than managing my tasks and hard deadlines. At about the same time, I was researching a lot about different spiritual practices (the thing you said! about making it interesting to you), it started with a physical notebook, but i found having to write out sources tedious, and i would often learn something new on a topic i had already written about, and it made bookkeeping a nightmare as I often used my notes as a sort of wikipedia. So I started a digital notebook on evernote, but I experienced bugs, then for a long time on onenote, but as I used it for more and more topics, I was finding it hard to keep up with just how structured the program was. I found and stuck with obsidian. Once again, did all the trendy obsidian things, but ultimately, i just need a semi organized way to jot information and thoughts down that I could access everywhere, and couldn't maintain anything more than that. I've gotten to a point in my life where theres a lot more soft deadlines, less overall structure, and so many sort of insignificant things I have to remember to do throughout the course of the day, and my bullet journal wasn't keeping up with that, it's always been more of a "how am i gonna do this" tool, than a remember to do things tool. So, I started using digital calendar for those handy notifications, but I was finding it hard to maintain a calendar, a monthly spread, and a weekly spread, like remembering to put something in, and check in three places?? no thank you. So I completely dropped the keeping track of time aspect in my bullet journal, and my life goes so much smoother because of it, so much less chance of human error. Once again, tried all the fancy calendar things, time blocking ect, but ultimately, I just need to know when what is happening. Using the calendar got a bit out of hand though, there were so many daily repeating tasks that I couldn't really see what was happening that day, and I knew from extensive experience that habit trackers in my bullet journal doesn't work for me, so, VERY HESITANTLY, I tried a productivity app again. The purpose is singular, stop fucking up my daily routines, and honestly? Routinary was fucking life changing in that regard. This time I had learnt my lesson, keep it simple and use it the way you need it, I kept the routines to the absolute essentials, and I shocked myself by just, randomly doing some extra things during it.

I'm starting my third year with the Clever Fox "planner". It has all the space for a quick daily blurb. Habit tracker. Monthly calendar, goal setting etc. Weekly wins and loses. And I use the weekly notes section for a weekly quote. And the back blank pages for any fun things I want to track or long journal.

Loved the video! I think I organize my journals very similarly to you and I totally agree with everything in the video about how someone should get started with journalling. Personally, I journal to bring clarity to my mind and spirit. Meditating and running provide a similar level of clarity, but I seem to gravitate to journalling; although, I'd like to implement those two activities alongside journalling.

The editing and organization of this video is so goood! For me, the number one reason I keep wanting to write stuff down has always been practicality. Then it is personal experiences I don't want to forget. Then it is stuff I want to get out. The thing is though that I usually get stuff out when talking to myself, so writing isn't that helpful to me. For anyone reading this: PLEASE don't do bullet journaling because it looks cute on pinterest, find a system and a reason, just like the video suggests. Otherwise it is so unbelievably pointless and a waste of time.

Your videos are always such good fun! And helpful too. Sitting here with my 3 notebooks. Of which 1 is my BuJo for which I'm in for the third year :D because I fail to be consistent. Because digital keeps overtaking it 😂 Right now all I'm doing is a 1 page (not spread) weekly setup... and it has been changing a lot, but it's also been helping! (also yes I had exactly 52 pages left, so it was meant to be). One of the other 2 is an old notebook I try things out in (it's way too big) and the last is a smaller (B6?) notebook with lines... I jot down things, trying to use it as a daily, but... consistency :P

All the shops are trying to sell me the perfect planner and discounts on all the subscriptions to hook me in because This Time It's Different, this app will change my life. But your approach has actually helped much more than adding on another service (and losing yet more money.) the comedy in this video is too good. lmao at people going into cardiac arrest at seeing your single folder chaos. lmao at the sticker of hoodie skull friend being placed into different school settings and then a monastery hahaha i forget that people struggle with "it depends" and "do what works for you." this is really the answer for everything, but developing your inner compass does take trial and error. it can be frustrating. i think your restaurant analogy is perfect to capture the decision fatigue, and also that it doesn't have to be that serious. eat what you like. try things until you find something tasty. make sure to put stuff that tastes good into your diet.

When i hear the word Journal, i think of a blank book that I use like a diary. Write down my thoughts at the end of the day before bed Every day. Just like i had been doing since I was really young My diary was my best friend. For my eyes only. I could write anything i wanted, get it out of my head. Work out stuff on paper . Big decisions, work out anger on paper so it didn't get into the real world, deal with confusion It was great, until i caught my husband sneaking to read it!!!! I was so betrayed and felt completely violated. Who knew how long he had been doing that? If i want to tell him something, once I figured it out and processed it in my head and on paper, then I can choose what to tell him. But by reading it he's prying into my brain at raw, unfinished thoughts Ge git mas at me when i caught him and defended his actions, saying tgat ge was basically entitled to read it because we were together. No. And he didn't have anything that i could read so it wasn't fair After that i stopped writing, or wrote as if i had an audience, censoring myself Eventually I had to find other ways to write because i missed my friend. But typing wasn't the same My journal was how i processed emotional stuff pretty much When i needed a Planner for work, i used the Day-Timer system which was designed for efficient time management. This was all before the Internet, cell phones, pagers, apps. And email . Contact lists were called address books on paper I incorporated a big wall calendar in my kitchen for family stuff color coded by family member. I don't know hiw people with 8 planners get anything done

also, ahhh, NoVA traffic-yeah, comparing that to having your things destroyed in a flood daily is VERY apt

I will say I'm new to this all to try to help my ADHD goblin brain. But I've got a work one and a personal one (work one is filling way faster). Part of what I'm doing is leaving my work one AT WORK. This is to try to help me leave my work brain at work too and minimize how much I'm doing off the clock. It's a bad habit I learned growing up to always be on for work.

Which video has the comments where everyone said how they track or what they use to keep the BuJo fun for them? I’d love more ideas.

This was actually in a community post I did. I tried to link this in the description after I posted this video but I learned that KZbin doesn't have links to specific posts. So I just reposted the old one so it's easier to find! www.youtube.com/@SimieIriarte/community

6:38 I dragged my friend to Target for the office section in an absolute tizzy bc his backpack looked exactly like this 😫😭 (edit: this was senior year of high school nearly a decade ago, I did NOT just do this randomly)

It seems to me, that having one journal makes you stick with the writing habit.

WARNNG: Do NOT combine a work and personal journal because guess what… your work notes can be subpoenaed or otherwise used in legal actions involving your employer. Yep that’s right. You definitely don’t want your personal things exposed that way. Also destroy your work journals by shredding or other permanent destruction when you leave that company. I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice!

Wanted to say a lot of good things about this video, but I'll stay with thanking you for the little angry face you set up at 10:48 with the glasses and mustache 😠🥸 . I don't know how long it took you to put the objects at the perfect spot, but the result is totally sticker material 😆
