Anchorage is more my speed, I like the in city outdoorsy life. Seems like it's a good hub to get to other parts of Alaska.

I'm not going to knock Anchorage, it is meant for some people and has great amenities. I prefer being alone in nature, my nearest neighbor quite a measurable distance away. When I served in the Army I tried to get Alaska for 10 years, Anchorage or Fairbanks, but that never worked out. I just can't get past the price of properties in Anchorage, but that is offset by the job opportunities as you stated.

Homelessness is crazy all over right now. Here in kalispell montana we have an big issue. Little town big homeless problem

Sounds like Whatcom County in Washington State. Homeless people everywhere, small towns, bug towns, and universal protection from the higher authority. One guy burned down the longest concurrent building in Bellingham WA (in terms of a business actually being run there), trying to sdtart a fire. We have homeless shelters aplenty, he didn't want to obey the rules.

I’m considering moving to Alaska from New Hampshire, pretty epic drive since I have pets. I wouldn’t want to live in anchorage direct as I currently live on 22 acres in the wilderness here in NH. Not sure I’d want to live like that in Alaska tho. Are there plenty of small towns around anchorage that would have places with larger yards maybe 1-2 acres? I don’t want to be too far from things but I also want at least some space and privacy. Thanks 😁

Be sure and stop in the mid west and pick me up because I just became available. I currently rent so that would not be a problem for me to forfeit my deposit.

Eagle River or Chugiak, which are right next to Anchorage have the size lots you are looking for. Eagle River is technically part of Anchorage but is NOT AT ALL part of Anchorage (Alaska municipalities are bizarre).

Pro: even though I only go in office 1 day a week, it's a 2 minute commute. Con: I can't pee off my porch all though the homeless dude by my work has no quams about heaving a Havana at the edge of the parking lot at 11am on a Thursday....

Chances in a more normal nonpost COVID market of getting 2 plus acres in Anchorage, not including Eagle River?
@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor Жыл бұрын
Not great. Maybe if you’re ready to spend easily $600-$800k range and the house wouldn’t be much to look at, but most lots are smaller in Anchorage.

All the homeless is in West Anchorage, specifically Turnagain and North Star. I would not recommend buying a house there

I lived in NorthStar at the edge of West Anchorage and Spenard for over 10 years and I loved it. We recently moved due to circumstances beyond our control. Homelessness is rampant nationwide, and is not limited to any part of Anchorage. West Anchorage and Spenard are AMAZING places to live.

I'd like to add something that NO ONE ever thinks about when they move to Alaska- access to healthcare after a life changing event like a stroke, trauma event, brain injury, etc. Since i work in healthcare, i deal with this every day. If you are moving to Alaska from another state and leaving all your support systems (siblings, children, etc) behind please consider how you will handle aging. Eventually, we all grow old or have an injury of some kind that requires medical care and support. If you are not within the Anchorage/Wasilla/Seward area, then the reality is you will need to be airlifted to Anchorage if you have a life threatening event. Some things can be handled in Fairbanks, but if they need rehab, you will eventually have to be airlifted to Anchorage 8 hours away where the only rehab hospital in Alaska is. In some cases, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DONT HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM and you live in a small town or village, you may not be able to return to your home. Ever. But if you live in the Anchorage/wasilla (or perhaps Fairbanks) its more likely you will be close enough to healthcare support systems that allow you to return to your community with support. I have seen SO MANY people that spent decades building beautiful cabins in remote areas, who end up falling ill and end up having to leave Alaska due to an illness that was inevitable. No one lives forever.

Arent realtors contributing to the extreme inflation in this area??
@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor Жыл бұрын
I guess in the same way that having a doctor involved in a procedure is more expensive than just figuring it out, or a contractor who builds a home instead of you building it yourself, or a pilot flying your 737 makes air travel more expensive.
@kevinshepard7796
@kevinshepard7796 Жыл бұрын
@alaska_realtor No, I'd say those are distinctly different things. Newly founded LLC's and realty groups that received loans during the pandemic are indeed artificially driving up the price of real estate across the country. This isn't a conspiracy theory. Want proof? Look at what is happening in Canada. Textbook example. Blind Bidding is still rampant in US markets. I'd say most real estate agents are guilty of telling a client that their bid wasn't good until the other fell through. 🤣

It's not realtors, it's the national slumlords who are buying up the apartment buildings and colluding for predatory pricing. AirBnbs aren't helping either.

If you're coming from left leaning places, especially california you'll feel right at home in Anchorage. Plenty of property tax, poor road maintenance and homeless camps. I know he mentioned those other places to travel to, but those of us that live in those other places would prefer that you just stay in Anchorage. #EagleRiverExit
