As a belgium (flemish) person. Breakfast is normally not sweet pastries. It is definitely sweet in most households once a week (usually Sunday). Normaly it is bread with charcuterie, cheese or jams (are sweet) or other spread. I do understand where this thought/misconception comes from. Some bakeries have offers on coffee and pastries in the morning.

@@bonjourmansee, I second Bart's opinion. Our most common breakfast is sliced bread with charcuterie, cheese, jam or nutella. Pastries like croissant and pain au chocolat is occasionally on sunday or when you have a day off work and have the time to take your time.

General doctors (huisartsen) are available within a week! Sure you have to make appointment for that but you will be helped within a week (or in case of worrying condition can be within a day.) Specialists can take longer to get hold of (If there is no emergengy). It's really not that bad!
@bonjourmansee
@bonjourmansee Жыл бұрын
You are right. But you need a specialist when you have a condition that needs special attention(and fast in some cases), and those appointments are too far apart... anyways I do want to add that: most doctors don't drag patients into unnecessary treatments , and I really appreciate that. they allow people to heal themselves on their own mostly without prescribing a lot of medicines. :)
@MrDogmaHunter
@MrDogmaHunter Жыл бұрын
It kind of depends actually. And a lot of it also depends on where you are at in the country. In a big city like Brussels, specialist practices will be overflown typically. Certain specific specialities are also in massive shortage of staffing (like dermatology). In smaller villages however, every household will be registered with a specific general doctor. If you require an appointment, usually you'll get in within 24 hours at most. If that general doctor refers you to a specialist, you'll get a prescription for it and typically you'll get an appointment within the next week or two also. Trying to get a hold of such a specialist without such prescription though... that will move you to the back of the line and that can indeed take months.

Shock nr 24: Belgians prefering to walk instead of using the car. That might be for Brussels but outside, they even use the car to bring their kids to school, they would even prefer to drive the car into the classroom if that would be possible to bring their child. Belgians are really hooked to their cars.

Very informative for new Indian expats here. As a Desi, living here past 23 years, having much more contact with local Belgian or Dutch people ( I know only fewer Indians here), even living with them was learning a lot about Belgian culture, and I am comfortable with it. Belgians certainly expect expats or foreigners living here to respect the rules and culture of the country. I know of people working in Real Estate who says many house owners do not prefer to give houses to Asians or Africans as many of them gave bad experience of leaving the house dirty, especially for them the " horrid" smell of spices ( I always keep my windows open or light a fragnance candle while cooking with spices), leaving the kitchen tiles greasy/ oily etc. All the houses of Belgian people I went to, I have noticed they keep their houses spotlessly clean and tidy , at least most of them. There are different cleaning products you can buy at supermarkets cheap. Anti Grease spray, anti calcium sprays ( to clean windows, bathrooms). And those makes a big difference. While driving, I have very rarely honked at people. The biggest traffic fines here are for overspeeding, not giving priority to pedestrians or cyclists, driving in influence of alcohol or drugs. One very important thing during winter time. Co2 poisoning and deaths. Please ventilate your house enough during day time. Ideal temperature is 20 to 22 degrees inside. CO2 poisoning is odorless, falling unconscious, and eventually death. Regards

About the pick-pocketing... don't you have to be mindful of you wallet, phone, bag everywhere you are these days, no matter the country. But you live in Brussels were the crime is higher so it's not a real representation of the rest of Belgium. About not a lot of people speaking english, that is because the majority of people living in Brussels speak french and they generally don't speak english as well. You'll find a lot more people being fluent in english in the flemish part of Belgium.

Flemish people speak very good English(most of them) - that's true, thats why I am able to have the best conversations with my Flemish colleagues! Brussels has a problem of pickpocketting- and recently(17 oct) metro time journal (MetroTime.be) published an article to avoid it (french version page 5) - yes that's not all Belgium especially countryside, I have found the sweetest people in my airbnb hosts in the country side.

This is a very good explanation, which for all most all aspects applies to Amsterdam as well. There are two differences: you won't have a language issue. In the Netherlands the Dutch automatically switch to English and a lot of signs are in English (too much/many as far as I am concerned). The other thing is that in the Netherlands you will be shocked by the amount of bikes for all kinds of use. I.e. short-, mid- and long distance for many purposes. While living in "Mumbay at the Amstel" (that is town below Amsterdam), I recommend to pay extra attention to the following: 1) Separation of waste. E.g. don't pack biological waste in plastic when you throw it into biological waste container. 2) Greeting people on the street is appreciated (don't feel obliged). But that works better if you don't walk around talking to your smartphone all the time. (I have seen Indian people entering shopping centre's and going through shops and leaving while talking to the devices all the time. That will be less appreciated.
@bonjourmansee

Hi Fred, Thats a really nice comment and thanks for explaining situation in NL. I totally agree with you. I have been to different parts of NL and it surprises me all the time to see so many bikes. sometimes i feel that there are more bikes and less people 😀. And yes talking on the smartphones always is really not a good idea 👍

Many of the "shocks" that you are descrinibing here would probably be valid anywhere in Europe. May I note something? Your experience is centered on big city life in Brussels, it's a bit different outside the capital - such as people using their cars much more. At one point you are mentioning the "language of Belgium"; should actually be the "languageS" of Belgium. Brussels is officially bilingual French-Dutch, and rather international, so you hear a lot of other languages as well, mostly English. But if you visit other parts of Belgium, you have to keep in mind that Flanders speaks Dutch and Wallonia speaks French, plus a small German-speaking community along the German border. It's probably easier to find people who can speak English in Flanders than in Wallonia - though I'm an English-speaking Walloon😉. As for the doctor's appointment, must also be a big city thing. Where I live, in the Ardennes, I can get an appointment with my family doctor for the same day or next day at the latest.

The foxes are not stray animals, they are wild animals slowly getting more used to humans, no longer hesitating to enter built up areas and have discovered that chasing a static garbage bin with plenty of leftovers is easier and more rewarding than running after a rabbit. They are only a danger for small to medium animals. I heard their stench is awful, so that's at least one reason to keep your distance.

I actually watched this video because I wanted to learn about the indian culture. Doctors appointments differ from doctor to doctor and it also depends wether you are attending a "family doctor" or a specialist (hospital f.e.). 14 days for making an appointment with my family doctor would be very long. Again, where do people get these italian language from? I bet you it's either tourists themselves or just small parts. Yes, we like our private space and beerculture, very much. :) Yes, we care about recycling and be responsible towards our waste/garbage. I applaud the last tip to be a responsible expat to not ruin or lessen the experience of those who follow. Well said.

Pretty good video I’d say, as a Belgian. Although I will not comment on the lack of pot belly, for myself 😂 Some small notes, but few I feel very compelled to comment on. I don’t think Indian houses are necessarily targeted btw, since anyone could have gold jewellery? That’s just what I think anyway, never heard of it - unless perhaps you are working in the gold and diamant sector in the cities like Antwerp. In general, good job with the vid!

Something in Europ very different from India is the way of driving. The trafic rules are of absolute importance and everybody is expected to follow those perfectly. If a car have priority they take it and if by mistake you refuse priority it come very often to a big accident even if it is the other car who hit you. Crossing red trafic lights volutarely are also consider a very serious offence that can take you in front of a judge that can suspend your driving licence and give a really big fine. Following these rules make trafic safer than in India exept when somes drive much to fast.

Thank you for making this video of my country, helping others make a smoother transition. Of course you are comparing to your country/city of origin and everything is based on your personal experiences and opinion. But as a Belgian living in Antwerp now, I think you made a very good observation of our county. From what I see you are a very friendly and respectful person, learning the languages (maybe even if it’s just basics), keeping in mind our traditions so that is immediately defusing any potential xenophobic reactions. But then again isn’t that the only way to go when moving to another country? Only about the breakfast, really? We eat preferably quality bread from our bakery with beleg and confituur or choco or eggs. Or maybe just musley if we are in a hurry. Pastry every day with a can of monster might just be typical for the young IT -crowd 😊. And the littering 😥police should be more strict on fineing because even some of us Belgians are just throwing it where it doesn’t belong. Cleaning service is not that uncommon. Probably more expensive than in India but many of us do get cleaning service. Not sure you can get them via your mutualiteit or with dienstencheques as an expat but have a check. Colruyt, Delhaize, Albert Hein all have home delivery for online grocery shopping. Enjoy the rest of your stay. You should come visit Antwerp one day.

What is this strange country you live in. It certainly can't be Belgium because it's nothing like I know it. In my personal experience people are often not in great shape, not that interested in cultural events, pretty xenophobic and when they drink it's often to excess. But then again I'm more of a working class guy from Flanders and not so familiar with how things work for IT professionals in Brussels. Most people are pretty OK when you get to know them though. Just don't be suprised when you get the cold shoulder at first. In my experience the regrettable racist attitudes of a lot of people I know only extend to people they don't know. But if you are not too uptight and do a good job those prejudices generally fade away. In Flanders English goes a long way, especially with basically anybody younger then 50. And allthough we all learn French in school most people in Flanders are not that fluent at it.

I didn't understand why that would be unusual. I'm from the USA and I have always done my own shopping and taken out my own trash. Heck, I even pump my own gas!

Indeed that details is correct - it's Flemish! (I did mention it in my previous video under a chapter on languages). However, for most of the Indians arriving nowadays - its really a shocker trust me - because the labour is not that expensive in India , so people have cooks and cleaning people for everyday work, moreover so many start ups offer free home delivery of groceries, young Indians in IT cities like Bangalore don't invest much time now to even go to supermarket and buy groceries - one click and they have it at home. And that's why I love my life in belgium - peaceful, and joyful as people do these basic things on their own even now! thanks for the correction again! Keep supporting the channel!

Europe, do not abandon Christianity! Every human being commits sin and they keep us away from God. There is only one way to reconcile with our heavenly father: by repenting of our mistakes, confessing them, forsaking them and accepting Jesus Christ as our only Lord and Savior, who suffered and died on the cross to pay for our sins in our place. . God loves you and has a place in heaven reserved for you. Read the Bible, seek it and accept it in your life.

Another thing about Belgium, you are not too often bothered by religious zealots.

In Belgium that type of religious indoctrination is considered very rude. The majority of Belgians are agnostics or atheists, only a small minority are actively christians. So you should not post this comment in a video about our country.
