Things have changed a lot since I left the Navy 45 years ago. Back then, I went where I was assigned & hurried up to wait. The pay wasn't all that great for enlistees. I wasn't sent where I wanted to go & served in a war (Viet Nam) that made no sense. During Sea Duty, I worked a regular 8 hour shift+2 4Hr. watches 7 days a week. While in port, I had to leave the ship (or hide) to be "off duty" or found myself on some work detail. Before the Internet, we wrote & received a lot of letters-making long distance calls from phone booths were expensive. Finding out that a shipmate's wife wasn't standing on the pier waiting when deployment ended was crazy. I've learned a lot about stability, but needed to be in control of my own life. It's good to know you are in control of yours.

They used to try and make us do those work details while off duty!!! I wasn't going for that!

@@GodGunsGills They still do, even in the Air Force! The base Wi-Fi died and a volunteer event (moving old stuff outta tents) became mandatory. I got bitched at, moved ONE locker then got "lost" walking to the drop site. I'm not doing that after fixing trucks for 12 hours in the desert heat.

Bro, I'm a Navy Veteran from the 80's, I spent 6 years on active duty, but when I got out in 1986, there were no jobs. I immediately missed the Navy, mainly for the personnel that I was around, which led me into going into the reserves. For me, the reserves was a mistake, because, well you don't live the military full time. I went into law enforcement which for me was the best way to integrate into the civilian world.

Nah, join anyway. Your recruiter will put you in a pre-bootcamp regimen where you'll go workout together and they'll help you lose weight before you ship off. They're very good at motivating and will make sure you put in 100%. (IF you get a recruiter that actually wants you to succeed, watch out for recruiters who have a 'don't-give-a-shit' attitude. They just want their quotas reached.

The problem with the navy is that they want you to do the same thing for your entire 20 years or at least remain within the same rating. I got kicked out for: (1) dropping out of OCS Newport, RI after just 3 days so chicken shit was it then, (2) I got kicked out of alcohol rehab by my counselor for ridiculing another patient for asking him a stupid question in group therapy or “what did he think about people who like to trash hotel rooms like rock stars do “???, then (3) for turning in a chit declaring I was no longer a volunteer for submarine duty and getting a navy doctor of the rank of full commander to endorse that by writing “remove from submarines” in my medical file. Two months later I was processed out without a word of explanation from anyone as to why I wasn’t simply transferred to surface craft being a QM3 at the time. Once out I took my transcript of sea service to the Coast Guard and got sworn in as a merchant seaman and issued a merchant mariner’s document good for all unrated jobs in all three departments. Eventually I got upgraded to AB/Lifeboatman and started shipping out aboard US flag merchant vessels after I got tired of teaching high school. I eventually was awarded the merchant marine expeditionary medal for participating in the military sealift in support of US and allied forces in southwest Asia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
