Given how hard SEGA enforces the distinction between MECHA Sonic and METAL Sonic.... the theory seems to hold ground. As for Robotnik not Roboticizing Sonic in Forces, maybe because he could only do so once. Or that the writers really needed Sonic to have plot armor for the story's sake.

I suppose the answer could be both. As franchises persist secret lore kept between the creator or creators have changed. Directors have had plans, only to throw them out the window. It could be that Metal Sonic was once planned to be revealed as Future Sonic. Or, perhaps Dr. Robotnic eventually got so crazed that he starts melding machine and flesh, resulting in this. Just because he didn't do it once doesn't mean he won't do it ever.

Well eggman is the type of guy to not do the same thing twice not to mention time passes between forces and CD so I can see him not wanting to do it anymore even if he did it in the past cause he's impulsive like that

This thought crossed my mind as well, as depressing as it would be for Sonic to get reboticized in one future. But I abandoned the thought because I think Metal needs to be an imitation that believes he's the real one.

Metal Sonic comes from Sonic CD, which has some time shenanigans. What if the time stones gave the ability to roboticize Sonic. Sonic has used the various emeralds and so could be resistant to that process, but the time stones gave the power needed to complete that (possibly by reverting his body to prior chaos emerald stuff). So metal Sonic is from a timeline in which Sonic failed and Eggman got the Time stones.

Nice video on this nice, haunting theory.

Honestly whether the theory is correct or not metal Sonic’s creation is such an anomaly because Shadow had to be created with the chaos emeralds and black dooms dna just be nearly as fast as Sonic. Metal Sonic had no prerequisites for his creation like that from what we know. We have seen Eggman create powerful robots but I don’t think it would just be that easy for him to make a robot that can almost match Sonic and Shadow in speed and even combat abilities. Like Eggman would have to realize he technically created something more impressive than Gerald since he assumably did it all on his own. I used to have a headcanon that Eggman used remaining master emerald energy his robot absorbed from the doomsday zone as that would make sense for making a robot that can keep up with Sonic but now it doesn’t canonically line up. There’s also the point that roboticzation wasn’t a thing in the Japanese continuity where these games were originally written and whenever metal sonic is destroyed we don’t see that alternate Sonic trapped in a metal body like the animals in badniks. Also roboticzation usually matches the body proportions of the victim which doesn’t make sense because metal doesn’t have the same quills as Sonic. As much as this theory fills out a massive plot hole the evidence just doesn’t line up

I love this and accept this theory. I think Eggman didn’t Robotasize Sonic in Forces because he’s moved on from that. Robotasizing was mostly a classic era move, or more namely from the cartoons and comics (and yes I know it’s different canons and continuities but we do t see him doing that anymore. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

I believe the last reference to (attempted) roboticization was in Lost World with Tails. But yeah, it isn't really his go-to move any more.

I do think that after cd eggman tried to recreate metal sonic with mecha sonic but was unsuccessful

Hence him finally giving up and going to pick up the scrap heap in 4.
