I just had a thought for your outdoor shower. Have you all considered like a Yurt style roof over your spiral? They have a huge opening and closing dome skylight in the center so you could still have all the light and ventilation and the star views but be warmer in the winters or during bad weather. And then you could add a glass or shutter type door to the entrance to cut down on the wind. Just an idea to play with. I love your homestead and I don't think I have missed a video in over a year! I hope you all stay healthy and well, thanks for being a nice little break for me. Stay safe and embrace the joy!

You were talking about your chickens not being free range and not getting enough insects and bugs to eat. I took a large bug zapper light and hung it in the coop. not the roost. Ever night here in west TX it draws them in by the hundreds and away from the homestead. When the chickens wake up every morning... Its a all they can eat morning buffet. And you get your rich, yellow egg's again. As well less feed bill.

It always amazes me when we get to look around your place how many, many things you have accomplished. Such a great laugh about the purple "pooper" which will go away when you can use your own home facilities inside and the great septic system you built for that purpose. Who knows, you may even get a regular washing machine inside too! We are all so fortunate to have such wonderful creature comforts at our fingertips. Thanks for another great video.

You should try growing Olives. There is a type of olive tree that grows in the desserts of Somalia that can take the heat. (olea europaea sp. africana) Also this type of olive oil is very high in polyphenols, super healthy. Apparently this Olive species produces more polyphenols because of the lack of water and high heat of the desert, just trying to survive the desert.

sounds very interesting how do they react to colder temp. I'm not knowledgable about dessert climates but I think they mentioned that the high dessert where they are can get close to zero celcius.

There’s so much to enjoy here but one of my favorite things is it feels as real and authentic as the earth itself. No attempts to appear perfect, but a willingness to share mistakes and lessons learned. No Pollyanna, hand-holding, Kumbayah singing stories: even as you admire the beauty around you and express gratitude for the many folks that have helped you in myriad ways, you speak of hardships and heartbreaks with an awareness that your audience is huge and you need to be careful about how much you divulge. Y’all are killing it. ☺️

Watching your video today. You're talking about your chickens. You say that the eggs are better if they're eating bugs. I just happen to see a video about people in Australia are building systems to Ray's black fly larvae fire digesting food waste. They have a serious problem with food waste in Australia. The black fly doesn't bother people and the way they're doing it they really don't have black flies. They just have tons of larvae which becomes great food for chickens. You might look into it, it's simple. With a few bins and some black flies and throw all your food waste into the bins and let the larvae grow. It kind of sounds disgusting, but if you watch one of the videos you'll see it's really not.

We’ve worked out with our chickens that if we let them roam for an hour or so before dark they will automatically head back to their roosts/pen. We can attest for the black fly larvae and have small tomato tins with holes drilled hanging with a few pieces of off cut meat. The fly lays the eggs in meat they grow and fall out. Chicken candy.

Hi guys! I had bronchitis for a week so I was holed up at my apartment with no wi-fi. Now I'm catching up! I'm so glad to hear that the mini-split has made being in the Airstream so much more comfortable! That's great that the elastomeric paint sealed it up and prevented bugs out of the Solar Shed. I'm glad you changed the bed and you have great storage under it too. I'm so glad that your outside shower has been so great. Too bad the wind whips around inside it. I bet it is harder to use in the winter with no roof. Yes, free range chickens do make for better eggs. Too bad about the neighbor's dogs coming and killing your free range chickens. They do look happy in there. That Legend Dairy Goat Barn is a fantastic build! That color is really nice for that building. Adali has very good color sense. Good to know that the flexible tubes for the water catchment break so you replaced them with regular PVC pipe to the water tank. The Shelter Logic rebuilds were awesome! I'm so glad you have a place to store your building materials now that the feed is over at the goat barn. The raised beds look great! Shade over the garden! Cool, next year you'll add drip irrigation to the raised beds fed by the IBC tote that was being used for the goats. So sorry the composting toilet building isn't working! I hope you can fix it at some point! Thanks for this video Longnecker family!

Have you looked into cork finish for the outside of your projects. The cork is similar to stucco or the hand finish you're doing now. It's a spray-on. It's colored to whatever color you want to be so you don't have to paint it. It offers extra insulation which you may or may not want. I don't know how that works for you. But it's supposed to hold up for a really long time. It is applied with a spray painter. Mike, are you already using. And I think they offer you a real long time warranty on it. I just saw a video from a company yesterday that's based in Arizona. That makes the stuff. It might be worth looking into for the future. It's possible they might even sponsor you the product just to get the exposure. Keep the videos coming. I enjoy watching you guys. Wonder how you worked that hard everyday? 😎

Project Kamp (KZbin) uses compost bins for storing their used compost. After a couple of years it can be used as plant compost. They are in Portugal and have several people on site most of the time. I can't blame you for wanting to ditch composting. Advantage of a septic system is the water gets filtered into the earth and helps the soil above.

I have also found that shade under maturing trees in Albuquerque reduces the intense sun rays and heat affects on the vegies. Trying red potatoes this summer, along with volunteer cucs. The cucs are surviving but not flowering and producing. Had this problem last summer with bell peppers. Patio tomatoes did great. All vegies in pots. Had six volunteer Desert Willow trees sprout in our front yard this summer! I am raising them in good-sized pots for now. One will go into the front yard of our townhome this fall. They will get about 20 - 30 feet tall and as wide and tolerate pretty dry soil and our mile high location. With the nice monsoons this summer, they literally bloomed all summer. Tough trees for heat snd high desert cold.

Septic tank cleaning company in New Zealand here. I'd recommend digging 2-4 long drops if you have groups of people coming in and out of the property. Also, you have a portaloo which requires pumping out. If you have the resources out there to get pumped out, another option would be to put a cement or plastic tank in the ground and have it emptied periodically. The long drop method is the cheapest and the best in my opinion as when it's full, you just fill it in with dirt and make another one.

Tomatoes - salsa and a canning hint. Tomatoes can often ripen --- erratically. They do not seem to operate on a firm schedule. Pick them as they ripen and toss them in large freezer bags as you go - no need for any prep aside from rinse off if dusty. Then - when you are ready and the tomatoes are all harvested - take them out and thaw. They will peel like a dream without blanching and then you process using what ever recipe you want. This makes life a lot simpler and allow you to plan. They freeze nicely and will stay stored like that for months so you can can in cooler times. Size and type do not matter.

You could put a beautiful foldable or panel oriented teepee style roof on the shower area. Japanese style is light. Weather proof, dismantles, stores easily. ❤️🙏🏽

I would love to know what exactly went wrong with the casa de caca? Is it completely unusable? If so why? How you plan to fix it? If its unfixable, just dig the barrels out and use it as a live/storageroom? Its a nice room overall and has a sink in it..

Oh love, you guys had no idea that the Casa de Kaka wasn’t working. I thought because you had people coming in and out you needed the purple box. Good luck can’t wait to figure out how you fixed it because that like to do that I mean, build our own composting not work on yours.😮🤣🤣

Have yall tried the plywood trick in the chicken run? You wet down an area of earth, put plywood over it and next morning flip it over and the chickens feast on bugs. Might sustain you for a little while.

I say take all of the toilet things out of the building and turn it into another living space. It's already built!

Yah, and maybe have an old-fashioned wood outhouse with a lime pit. Our family did that when we homesteaded for a summer in eastern Sierras during the mid-50's. LOL😊

I wouldn't say Casa de Caca was a failure... ( I have promoted this idea to soooo many people so far) 😂😂😂, it's a work in progress.. and has our Tiny Shiny Family ever not been so optimistic!!! We will make it happen.. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

You will have to build a cellar after you finish the house for all those canned tomatoes. ;)

Were you able to check into those free water generating panels that Cochise County is apparently giving away? I saw them on another Cochise County KZbin account and messaged you because with 6 people, numerous anumals and gardeny, you can never have too much water.

They're actually pretty big and kind of hard to integrate into what we've got going on currently. Maybe one day!

Hi there, Keep up the good work; you have created a unique experience, lifestyle and provide a resource with merit. Regarding the ‘Casa D’ Caca’. May not be as you intended, but hardly a complete failure. You still have a nice structure, with water collection, that can be converted into… (Fill in the blank) As I see it: it’s an opportunity to remodel into a proper bathhouse, flushing toilets (2-stalls?) and indoor showers (2?) with plenty of hot water, a couple sinks, mirrors and a split mini heat-pump for year-round comfort. Could be other things… but that’s my vote. May be well after the house is done, or may be a decent side project. Look at the support you got for the Goat Shed. Maybe some of your future workshop guests would be willing to pitch in? I understand the added cost, work, septic system, etc. (shower water to irrigation, toilets to conventional septic system) But what a real plus for the family, and, guests, etc. It’s not a failure it’s experience… I have lots of experience. 😊

Actually, maybe double stalks is a bit optimistic, maybe just 1 big ‘conventional’ bath house.
