24 years as strict vegetarian. 16 years using permaculture designs in my garden, then 8 acre homestead. I've planted thousands of trees, bushes perennials and annuals. Root crops, grains, squash and herbs. And I'm certainly not trying to grow 100% of our caloric intake. Hell, that is what society and community are for! I'm not trying to be a subsistence grower. I'm just supplementing my diet with plenty of fresh, in season, food. Grown without much effort, and without poisons. And I have absolutely no problem with anyone who eats meat, but I choose not to. Because it is a choice, and I live in a culture that allows choice. The questioner seems to not realize that permaculture design is like a toolbox, and all techniques are in the toolbox, and can be used as needed, when needed. I don't understand why some people cannot understand how doing work up front pays off for the future. Putting in systems is work. Harvesting you produce is work. Processing you harvest is work. All of that is going to take time and effort. But you get to choose your hard.

William you saw the size of my 1.5 year old food forest when you were here. It’s about 1200 sq ft I’m getting about 3 gallons of strawberries a day. The only inputs were planting the food forest and maybe spending an hour a week doing a bit of weeding. It’s almost plant it and forget it until til it’s time to harvest stuff. Hey SGB. As to your viewer on tilling ... before mechanical tilling there was and are using an animal pulled mold board plow, cultivator discs and hand raking. Also, a wheel hoe pushed by the person is a tool been around for over a century+. Bottom line to all of the various questions your viewer has sent you maybe they should research the various farming methods of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Learn what a yoke is and the various animals and yokes used to pull the tools used to manipulate the soil. Learn how they chose different landscapes for their crops, etc. Ex.: why you grow ramps on the north slope of a mountain side, etc. I'm going to watch this again. I'm here shaking my head on some of this. Keep on keeping on. Not everyone will "get it". Wu Tang out.

1 have 3 Nigerian Dwarf goats and 3 kune pigs, and various poultry. The pigs and goats had 1/3 acre of pasture and cleared it to bare sand within a year. I moved the goats into the front 2/3 acre to let them keep the grass down. Then I divided the pasture in half and put the pigs on one side. Now I have to feed them, but I am wanting to fatten them anyway for freezer camp later this year. The other half of the pasture I planted Timothy grass, clover and sun hemp and hopefully they will improve the soil and then provide feed for animals

I’m sure these are the same comments that the Native Americans heard from the British, but the Native Americans, were not ruining the soil, and poisoning or food. Most of these comments sound like scared strip plow farmers (traditional farmers). You’re making positive moves, and doing it in a smart way. You are making these people uncomfortable, and when people are uncomfortable, they are learning, so keep it going! Even if they pick up a few tips, it’s worth the all the naysayers. I’ve picked up so much, and many ideas, thank you, trying to garden in central Texas is no joke, but you’ve helped!

@TinyhomesteadPrototype Where I grew up, Connecticut, on the Connecticut river, there were many tribes. They grew crops, hunted, and fished, they didn’t have to move around that much. They understood and respected the land and water, they took only what they needed, and gave back to the earth. They understood if they over hunted, or over fished, that there resources would not return, they knew to do controlled burns, for the health of the forest and future crops, thus giving back to the earth. There’s nothing wrong with teaching people how to use and help manage/enhance their land. I know live in central Texas on 6 acres, and had a heck of a time trying to figure out how to garden and grow foos in this very hot and dry environment. Watching permaculture channels, I have learned to manage the soil and heat (last summer we had 120 days of 100+ degree,consecutive days, with no rain) and successfully grew food for my family. I learned how to make good compost fast and slow, to enrich drought, beat to heck soil, and because of the channels, when we were down to only being able to water once a week, my garden thrived. Yes, I do go to grocery store, but the education I get from these channels, and I can pick and choose what I want implement in my own ways. I don’t have animals on my land yet, I would love some chickens, (don’t know if could dispatch them) but my neighbors gladly give me horse,goat and chicken manure, for my compost, and in return are happy with my excess vegetables. I also source grass fed organic meats from small farms, and appreciate all efforts the farmers put in to raising the animals in the most humane way possible, and I’m happy to support these small businesses/farms. What’s the harm of someone growing their own food, it doesn’t harm anyone, takes a small stress on the world’s food supply (so there’s more for you), and they leave the earth better than they found it. Even small changes can help, and if more people make small changes, it becomes the norm. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to voice their opinions, but you could start a channel and teach people how to sustain on land your way, and maybe your way would be better, but they are living their way and showing their success and failure. I have respect for people who open their lives, for all to see (and judge), and that can’t be easy, do I believe everything they say and show, no, but I am an adult and do my research, and corralate my own decisions. I feel like when someone asks a question, the answer may not be what they want hear, but if you ask, be ready for the that person’s answer, if someone already knows the answer to their question, then why ask, why not teach. Please read this with kindness and love, because that’s how it was written! In today’s world we all need more patience, tolerance, kindness and love ❤️. Interesting commenter. He had a few good questions regarding how much yield per acre vs other forms of gardening. Some of the "yield" that is hard to measure is your positive impact on the environment, wildlife, the health of your livestock, etc. I would call that a positive yield, that is not caloric. Will a factory farm corn field yield more calories per acre than a food forest? probably. but that's not the point of permaculture And when he drifted into the globalist Islamic rant, he completely went off the rails and this has absolutely not one thing to do with agriculture

I see a Vegan necessity to rely on vegetables and fruits for their diet hence the calories and proteins required. Perhaps look for a Vegan life style channel to see what you can adapt to your situation for your, foods. I regards to food production, you can use parts of the Permaculture System when it comes to fruit trees and swales. Listen to a few people on KZbin to understand the benefits that it may bring. In regards to production of vegetables you can look at a few channels in a market garden style like No Till Growers, Jessie is really good, and they do go out to others farms too. Charles Downing another that may be very beneficial to a Vegan Style living. There are many growers of vegetables like Lazy Dog Farms that show you results, an example of getting a 37X yield return per pound of seeded potatoes. Tony O’Neal another at Simplify Gardening, Red Gardens in Ireland there are so many no one can say they are 100% self reliant but 90% is acceptable. I do agree with William in regards to meat but I respect your path as a Vegan.

Funny - I use perennial clovers in a biointensive context .. and don't use ANY powered machinery to manage it. maybe he should _try_ before *gripe?* I figure the fake homesteaders are the ones that are always at the homesteader meetups with merchandise to sell. The rest of us are busy homesteading, and have no time for them. (I even blew off watching the exit and build free stream, because I was working on my own projects) The one feature of natural systems that stands out the most is that it is the activity of its individual members striving to live that makes the whole thing work. Capitalism IS the natural system. 85-95 % failure indicates to me that they did not bother to take care of their needs for water, biomass and soil life before plugging trees into the *dirt.* ProHo is making the same error, right now. Its painful to watch.

@@TaxEvasion777 Yes, David is awesome. I have been to many of his garden talks. Actually I'm going to one tomorrow at the Clay County fair grounds in North East Florida. He was in Orange Springs a month ago he did three talks in one day. He called it David and the Good garden masterclass. He did a two hour talk in my back yard in March of 2019. We had 75 people here.

I watch your videos as well as many others videos to get good ideas of things to try in my garden. Never once have I thought to myself...this guy on KZbin has to solve all my problems. I certainly never thought your vidoes were political or Christian based really. Although you trusting in the Lord is a good thing. I was looking for composting how to ideas. Not only did you explain it well enough so i fully understood but you actually physically did it. Even showed problems that happened so we could learn from that. Keep doing what you're doing. Dont worrry about key board warriors probably using google to find talking points. If Veggan warrior knows so much he should start a channel. My guess is he doesn't have the energy to flip a compost pile.

Hehe, this was pretty fun. But I think he made some points. When I look at videos of Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton they make sense. But some of their followers seems to have warped their principles to serve their own agendas. Sometimes including monetising the hype. With that said, to me it looks like permaculture is a sound system. Although, I am not an expert in the field; I am just an ordinary homeowner with a garden, not a farmer. I'm trying to find ways to start using my garden in a better way. Starting with compost and raised beds.

I agree with you! Some of their students are absolute charlatans. They've twisted and warped what permaculture was intended for.

Don't be dogmatic, for or against permaculture or any other system. Every site has different factors to consider, and every grower has a different set of goals. No-till, deep mulch, Ruth stout, double-digging, intensive planting, dry farming, cover cropping, they all have a time and a place, and there is much overlap where any of a number of systems could work.

So, another thing you failed to notice about our naysaying friend is that they are also a commie. I think they were trying to mask their wording, but it totally shows through the cracks if you know the Reds' various kinds of newspeak. Also, can you clarify "purple breathers?" Never heard that one, before
@ThePermacultureConsultant8 ай бұрын
Purple Breathers are the communists of the permaculture world. They've replace the 3rd Ethic of permaculture with "Fair Share." It was originally "Return the Surplus to the Previous Two Ethics" (Earth Care and People Care)

Good for you Will. I hope you haven’t been dwelling on this too much. People will always mistake you for their shadow when you’re the one in front of the camera. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone with any method scientific or otherwise. Just keep taking responsibility for your own problems. It’s totally myopic to focus only on calories. Nutrient density is key and it’s very telling that the vegan diet requires supplementation. Hungry kids need milk and eggs not pea protein. Complete “self-sufficiency” is a dead end as well. If you think you can get everything you need from your own garden you will only end up 1.) an exploitable peasant and 2.) extracting more from the land than you give back (or both). Build bridges not bunkers.

I've never heard this point of view from a vegan that Permaculture is a waste of time, or that our efforts would be better put elsewhere. I've been practicing Permaculture for about 7 years now and it only gets better and better. Geoff Lawton, I can't find the video, talks about when you observe and interact you can find deeper connection, reward and understanding. I've found this to be true. As the world "modernize-es" it continues to disconnect from what Joel Salatin calls our umbilical connection to nature. This can't be measured in calories, output or financial gain. I was vegetarian for 15 years and it was purely social/political, it was sold to me as being healthier, and maybe it was, but I ate my fare share of not-dogs, garden burgers, Amy's frozen dinners, lots of Taco Bell, all ultra processed foods! And I didn't save the world ;( These days I eat primarily whole foods, and yes I'm eating CAFO meats and imported produce, but each year it becomes less and less. A noble pursuit? And my connections with local producers becomes stronger and stronger. I find it a fulfilling life worth living.

You wanted to see evidence of a huglekulture in nature. I live i. The pacific northwest. The temperate rainforests here are essentially one gigantic huglekulture. In the summer here it can go 4 months with no real rainfall. On the island im on at the moment , soul daprhs are no more than a few inches in most places. Im using huglekulture design to help hold water over summer and to slow subgrade flow over winter , to help replenish the aquifers.
