Maybe I can share my permaculture journey story as it also revolves around Geoff. The loss of my grandmother is what started triggered my discovery of this life. She was a fantastic woman. Grew up in a labor camp in Ukraine. Survived it. Survived the war, although her whole family did not. Fled to England and met her husband who also fled from the war and was in a concentration camp himself. They had my mother, who then traveled to Canada and met my father. My grandmother was a large part of my life for my whole life. She was my baseball's "mascot". She would always say our team was going to win because we were more handsome than the other team. She made sure the other team heard it too. Her laugh was disengaging, she would cackle after saying it, and everyone around would laugh. She lived minimalistically her whole life. She would save her bathwater to flush her toilet. She would use heating bottles in her bed and keep the furnace off. And she would garden. My God would she garden. As a child I always laughed at it too. "Grandma, why would you grow potatoes when you can get a whole bag in the store for $3. But I certainly didn't complain when she made me her meals, as the taste was out of this world. That woman could cook. She passed when I was 35, and it hit me hard. I had lost people before, but for some reason she was different. She was just such a large part of our family, and it would be forever changed with her passing. I decided to make a raised bed and plant a tomato plant in her honor. That tomato plant changed my life forever. I started looking up what to spray on my food to make it grow big and large. 1 bed became 2. 1 plant became 10. I then came across several things in this time period... This thing called Permaculture from this guy named Geoff Lawton. I picked up Bill Mollison and David Holgrem's "Permaculture One". This book changed me forever. So I moved past the fertilizers and decided that instead of focusing on this years plants, I would focus on NEXT YEARS SOIL. I started mulching, finding sources of manure. I discovered biochar. I started planting trees. Trees everywhere. What started as 2 peach and 2 pear trees turned over 1000 trees now, planted to permaculture 7-layer design. I have thousands of different plants, herbs, flowers, accumulators, confusers, all stitched together in a web of a living forest. After a few years I decided then that I would start documenting my journey, and inspire others to start planting trees also. So I made my channel, got my phone out, and started recording some cold hardy permaculture stuff, because there isn't enough of it out there. I now have so many people who have started food forests because they have seen my videos. I am now doing for others what Geoff, Bill, David did for me. And so the snowball continues. Many of my watchers are starting their own channels and documenting their journeys - and the army is being built. The army that humanity needs. One that plants trees for the future. One that creates their own legacy. And this is going to sound crazy, but when I am out in my food forest, I can feel my grandmother watching me. I can feel her all around me. I just wish she could have seen what I've done when she was still here. I hope she knows what an inspiration she was for me. And that my life is forever changed for having her in it. I too started gardening because of the loss of a loved one - and it has changed me to my very core. Hopefully I can show people cold climate permaculture the way that you can show from a warmer climate. I just love that such an artistically inclined person as yourself has decided to make permaculture videos. You have quickly become one of my favorite channels.
@TheWeedyGarden3 жыл бұрын
Thankyou Keith or Trish. Not sure which one of you wrote here, but it is appreciated. You are spot on 👍🏼 It does not sound crazy. She sees u. She sees it. Glad to know I have someone to refer to when someone asks me how to grow a mango in the cold zones. I just tell them to build a big room with a big light and a big heater and say that the mangos will cost $100 each to produce, but maybe you have a better idea? 😃

I always love seeing this story. Your videos have been some of the most helpful with designing my own food forest in the colder areas of the world

Hello from Austria to Canada, I have been watching your channel occasionally (including the one video about the garden of your father in law), this is a beautiful story and your grandma would be proud of your fine permaculture system. - and on a more serious note : I just (August, 17th, 2023) read that in Canada in the sparsely populated Arctic Circle they have to evacuate people because of the wildfires. About time the life-affirming army forms).

That’s a step in the right direction. Annual gardens come and go, trees are for beyond tomorrow. I’ve binged watched Geoff’s videos and planted 100 fruit trees in my backyard. Still adding to it every weekend, I’m 3 years into it. It’s true that once you see the connection between food independence, nature and quality of life, you can’t unsee it. P.S. Get some chickens for your veggie compost and a bit of bonus fertilizer to kick start the young trees.

I love listening to Geoff Lawton. I too am making a mini food forest on my 3/4 acre already wooded property in Texas. I have limbed up my forest to a high canopy and removed small trees which were crowded and could never grow to full height in their locations. This past year I have added 28 fruit tree/bushes to my property. I already had red bananas, blood orange, and two apple trees. Once my planting is more established, I plan on raising chickens and honey bees. Currently, however, I get donated to me on a wood stump in the forest, a nice pile of rabbit poop. The stump continuously gets recovered. I make a tea with it, to feed my plants. It's suppose to have 3 times more fertilization than chicken poop. When my carrots are ripe, I leave the rabbit a gift. I also have a 5000 gallon swimming pool turned natural pond, with many goldfish. I use that water as well, to put on my plants. I do not like using store bought chemicals at all. I have a compost bin and wood debris piles. I use the hugerkultur method and small swells to maintain rain, as I am on a sloping property.

Synchronicity indeed. You know the cool thing about Synchronicity is that as much as we perceive it from where we stand in life, there is always so much more going on in the world that we don't yet know about, but effects us and is effected by us. I my journey has led me here. I knew I was in the right place and I was waiting for the lightbulb to click on and tell me how all I've been learning is going to come together. And then I watched you find Geoff the way you did. Without this video I would not be going where I am now. I emailed asking about the online course and mentioned I was bummed about only recently discovering your page, Geoff's institute, and all of this Permaculture/Food Forest idea. To my great surprise they said I could start the online program late and enroll now. Wow....Just wow. This is just the beginning.
