Hi Steve. Here in S Nevada, I seek out solitude much like you do. No ocean , but the desert offers some nice scenery and lots of places to escape from people. TY for your videos. In my younger days my favorite travel writer was Paul Theroux. Your speaking sometimes reminds me of his writings.

Thank you, Ed. I lived in Las Cruces, NM, for eight years before I retired last year. Spent a whole lot of time walking the Chihuahua desert alone. It's awesome, but I need a beach. And you can't live in the US on social security. I couldn't, anyway.

You’ve got the most perfect theme song! Love it! Some people have no appreciation for creative people. What’s with that? I love your art work! Never had an issue with the police here but I used to get stopped quite regularly driving through Sonoyta MX just over the AZ border heading to my place in Rocky Point. Usually a $20 took care of it. I think I got hit for $100 one time even though I always literally crawled through that town. I was driving a Mercedes sedan in those days and was probably just asking for it. I don’t even own a car here and have no intention of buying one. Liberating actually!

We are back in the US now for a couple months. I got stopped in Prachinburi once and had forgotten my International Licence.... It was going to be 5 or 600 baht. Explained I had just left it at my house in Ban Sang....Ticket was reduced to driving without licence for 2 or 300 baht. We all left as friends.

My friends used to say that if you fly through Middle Eastern airports always put a copy of Playboy on top of your clothes in your suitcase. Any official in those countries who searches your bag will take the magazine and leave whatever else is in there. My friend said he'd smuggled liquor and weed under Playboys.

Hey Steve, I've only ever had one bad experience with the Thai police and that was in Bangkok about 25 years ago. There were signs posted about a 10,000 baht fine for littering. Though I am not a litterer I did take note of the signs. Later when I walked past a police booth smoking a cigarette the police seen me. I continued to walk and extinguished my cigarette and kept the butt in my hand for about 4 or 5 blocks as there were no garbage bins anywhere to be seen. When I cam up to a street stall I bent over to pick up a laser light to have a look at it and the seller also handed me another to look at. This is when I put the butt next to my foot to free up my other hand to look at the other laser light. Within a second of putting it next to my foot someone swooped in behind me to pick it up and to my amazement it was one of those police officers from back at the booth ~5 blocks away. He then marched me all the way back to the booth to get my 10,000 baht fine. I knew this was a stitch up as I was going to pick up the butt again immediately after I looked at the laser lights. When I was confronted by the police sergeant back at the booth I pleaded with him for understanding and also pointed out I had no intention of littering. After a while we reached a compromise and he was happy to take all the baht out of my wallet which was approximately 250 baht (there were no Travel Card ATMs in those days). I got off lightly and lucky he didn't know that I had about 4000 baht hidden in my sock 🙂

My feeling when you told those stories that you don’t understand the art and joy . of negotiation . My mother taught me when I was about 14 in Panama and it was a skill I took to heart. The situation can have its more crass orientation or , if handled well, the joy of competition like a game of sports. Once in Panama when I was maybe seventeen I was bar hopping in the more local section of downtown when a policeman tried to seek fees for his perception of the error of my ways.. in a matter of ten minutes we went from a fee of several dollars down to nothing when I explained I had no money. He was crestfallen until I suggested we go to my usual haunt and buy him a beer. He found nothing wrong with the solution and we spent the next hour together shooting the shit and drinking beers and he finally decided to go back to work. I consider this a “master class” on negotiation that was spontaneous and had two winners, not one. I love situations like that..Now about the time in Vietnam coming out of a whore house to a policeman with weapon drawn and hammer back on his gangster looking 38 ……….., next time.

Your story reminds me of an afternoon in a Laos "cafe" while on a visa run 20 years ago. The teenager "guarding" the place was fiddling with his M-16 when it went off 10 feet from us. After we picked ourselves up off the ground, we left before the police could show up and suggest the kid shot at us for a good reason.

I used to smoke about half a pack a day then gave up cold turkey 8 years ago. I tied rubber bands around my fingers. When I got cravings I bound the bands tighter to the point my fingers turned blue. Did that for 3 months ! There was a sadistic pleasure in seeing the pain visually as it represented and distracted the very real pain of withdrawal. The sense of anxiety smoking creates is akin to walking around with small fitted shoes. The only time you feel relaxed is when you remove them but it’s just for ten minutes until you need to keep walking, put them back on and think about the next break, or cigarette. Not the greatest way to live when you realise you are just pumping the governments coffers.

My ‘Nakhon’ nowhere Police story about ‘ no helment’ was actually in Nong Khai 15 years ago, I had gotten pulled over in town by a walking policeman, and he said ‘ no helmet’ its 100 baht fine!! My helmet that came with the rental bike was cracked and useless sitting in the front basket of the motorbike. I tried to show him the crack but he got annoyed with my stalling, all the while 90% of all Thai riders didn’t have helmets on and were buzzing by us. Quietly he took out a official ticket book and wrote out ticket to be taken to Police Station. I didn’t argue as he was serious now. At the Police Station it cost me 300 baht !!!!

In my time in Thailand I have been stopped twice for driving while farang. Once, I was merging in 5 lanes to 2 lanes entering the expressway toll booths, totally gridlocked and maybe 1-2 mph. An older, very angry-looking motorcycle cop, with a very large old pistol, told me I had cut off a car and caused an accident behind me (yeah, right). He handed me a wooden board with his bribe menu and wanted 500 baht. All I had was a 1000 note, and you can’t get change from your extortionist. He went from angry to very pleased. My takeaway? I now keep 400 baht inside my International Driving Permit, and would hand over both when needed. I could get all holy and say police should uphold the law and not be a gang of thieves, and create trouble for myself. Or just pay the minimum when necessary, as Thais do, and move on. We’re not going to change things. My Thai friends get angry at me. For paying too much. Thais only pay 200.
@tsp7517
@tsp7517 Жыл бұрын
Not letting police ask any amount of money without talking about it isn't a good idea for the future of farangs and... Thai people. By accepting any price (Same for a taxi), you enforce the power of the one asking money. He will therefore feels more and more confident and prices will go without limits. When someone is raising prices, he will eventually raise prices for everyone, Thai included. Use to be not long ago 500 bahts. They are asking 1000 now. Inflation 100%. And they continue until enough people tells them to keep it normal. Your friend did good. Not only for him but for the all Thai and farangs. More people should do that. Or wear a helmet...

Thanks for another spellbinding episode Steve; nobody tells a story like you do. I totally get what you mean when you said, “it’s easier to quit a woman than cigarettes”, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Under present circumstances, if a few deep puffs does the trick, and gets you out of worrying (the subconscious kind, to be sure) about your upcoming hernia operation, and the temporary moratorium on the “monthly millionaire weekends” in Phuket town, then puff away. Now I am all for quitting cigarettes, and I would support your doing so, for the sake of your health, but you don’t need me or anyone else to tell you that. In the end, it’s all a trade-off isn’t it? And as some Wise Man once said, “Who of you can add an hour to his life by worrying?” As for the critics of your show, don’t give them too much thought my man, because you can’t please everybody, everywhere, all of the time. And sometimes, people just got to crap on some else because of all the crap of their own they have to wade through. It’s all good. I am a dozen years older than you and I have seen more than one snake take a pee, so I know a little bit about life and what makes people tick. In this regard, I have nothing but words of encouragement and admiration for you Steve. You do you. Whatever makes you smile, do more of it. It makes me smile too! 😊 Sammy
