I think the extremely rare cards are very good for the overall flow of Yugioh trading and selling. I don't like, however, when a very rare card is needed for a meta deck. It's a pain to buy so I just buy the single card off of my friends.

As a Magic player a lot of what is said here resonates with me. If you're looking to crack packs for chase pulls I have some bad news for you, it's a losing battle. The odds will always be against you so I highly recommend buying singles. That being said cracking packs can be fun and everyone should do what's best for them.

I don't play Yugioh but these ghost rares, starlight rares, etc. really seem like expeditions/inventions/invocations to me, since they were in about 1/6 boxes. The only difference being, that as always in magic, there never are more affordable versions to chase rares.
@aidanquiett668
@aidanquiett668 3 жыл бұрын
@@snekofspice8139 Our card games have many trade offs. Yugioh is near impossible to get into as a new player due to weird releases for sets (still cant wrap my head around what sets are for what player) and extreme complexity in game play, but its fairly affordable for the average player, where the most meta decks are often just about 300 dollars, and structure decks are viable for semi competitive play when used correctly (buy 3, make a deck from that for cheap and upgrade it if you enjoy it). Meanwhile Magic is incredibly expensive even for beginner friendly formats, and most sets are now designed where 99% of the set is worthless and the only time the chase mythics aren't the only valuable cards in the set is when WOTC screws up majorly and prints broken uncommons and bans them soon after

I actually wanted to pick up some boxes of Rage of Ra but I missed the preorders for my local and I knew about the ratio for Ghost Rare Ra and how some sellers could be selling you their leftover boxes so I did not buy any online. However, I was able to go to one of the several local Walmarts and Targets near me and I bought every blister and pack they had. 154 packs in total inside of 77 blisters. I literally pulled the Ghost Rare Ra in the last pack of the last blister.

That's the difference between TCG and OCG. OCG gives more rarities, better products, launches staples in multiple rarities so both collectors and people who don't wanna spend much to build their decks can have their fun. In TCG we only get more expensive stuff. And also less stuff. This year's tin didn't even have promos. Some years back Konami removed ghost and threw a stupid excuse, even though OCG still has it and now Ra is coming as ghost. Ultimates are now only in OTS. Rares are going away (and won't be replaced by supers). So what's the deal? The deal is that Konami doesn't care. As long as TCG players keep buying their shitty products with terrible ratios, less stuff than OCG, accept their banlists limiting or banning side cards so Konami can sell new (and extremely more expensive) ones, the company won't care or change. That's a pachinko company for ya.

Breakers of Shadow was the set where they stopped printing Ghost rares. Konami came out with an article explaining why they were discontinuing Ghost and Ultimate rare because it ended up costing them too much money due to the fact that they were including a foil in each pack.
@Tyler-Wiley
@Tyler-Wiley 3 жыл бұрын
Why are they removing rares?
@JonoSSD
@JonoSSD 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tyler-Wiley that'd be cool and all, but OCG still have them. Sure, they have less secrets in a box as a trade-off, but I guess a lot of people would like the chance to pull up an Ultimate or a Ghost, even a reduced one. TCG also usually has more commons per box than OCG, especially now that Rares are gone (which I don't know why).
@jimmyha1898
@jimmyha1898 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tyler-Wiley Yea that was an idiotic excuse, since the OCG never stopped with ghost and ultimate rares. Having a foil in each pack just reduced the value of super rares in general. Look at them now. They probably didn't make good sales in 2020 cuz of covid and all, so now they are suddenly adding ghost rares back in. It can't possibly be that expensive to print cards that are pulled once out of every case. They just want more money.

Rare cards are nice, but it does lead to price hyping and people hoarding them to cause artificial scarcity. Just because it's something like 1st edition LOB Blue-eyes or DDS blue-eyes, doesn't mean it's actually as rare as people claim. Time and time again, I have seen many posts on IG where 1 guy has like 50 1st edition NM copies of a "rare" card like LOD Yata-garasu or SM-51 Blue-eyes (OCG ultimate rare blue-eyes from 2001 that's supposed to be REALLY hard to get).

I can testify to the "not as rare as ppl claim" as I actually have 17 copies of 1st edition LOD Yata sitting in a tin. I also have 4 1st Edition LOB Blue Eyes. I'm glad you brought up what you talked about in the last part of the video, Paul. It's something that most normal people fall into the trap of, they see their fave Yugitubers opening boxes and cases of packs and think "wow, that's awesome, it looks like such fun, I want to do that too!" not realizing that more often than not, as you mentioned, those Yugitubers usually make their money back and then some by doing the video, as well as sometimes not having to pay regular retail for said box or case. I know I'm guilty of this myself, so it's definitely something a lot of us should take into consideration.

I bought a box of Magical Hero because the damn card was more expensive that the whole set and last time I opened a pack was 9 years ago, so I took the huge risk: if I pulled a Magician’s Souls the box was completely for free, but the chances of missing and having a lot of useless cards were huge. It turned out I pulled from that box one Magician’s Souls, but also The Dark Magicians, Soul Servant, Magician’s Combination and Apprentice Illusion. I’ve never pulled anything as good as that box. It was a miracle. And I believe that’s the thing you are saying. Yugitubers uploads miracles because that sells and make companies happy. But the big disclaimer here is that miracles can exist, sure. But won’t happen to you. Or maybe but the amount of resources you have to invest are too high and then it’s not a miracle, just an expensive purchase.

I don't pay for ultra high rarity cards or limited print cards. I just go for the base set. 1 copy of each card for the binder. If I get more than 1 copy it goes into the storage box.

Hey Paul, great video! I especially like the editing in this one! But one thing that I think isn't totally accurate in it, is just because you open a chase card (ghost rare, starlight, collectors rare) in a case, it doesn't mean there's a lower chance for other boxes to have a ghost/starlight rare. Unless Konami completely maps their boxes (which I don't think is the case anymore, I think Konami tries to do a good job of really randomizing their pull rates), there are certain proportions that every box has a chance to pull a chase card. In the case of Battles of Legend: Armageddon, you have about one starlight in every 2 cases (or one in every 24 boxes). But that doesn't mean one case can't have more than 1 starlight. Some cases may have 3 starlights, and you might go 5 cases without pulling one. This is sometimes known as "rarity clumping" by some, but I'm sure there are other names this phenomenon is called. I think some sets have worse rarity clumping than other sets, but I think generally it's more accurate to think of the chance of pulling a starlight rare or ghost rare is one in every X boxes, or one in every (X * 24) packs. In the same way a coin has a 50% chance of landing on heads, you can go many coin flips without landing on heads, or you can land on heads many times in a row. Let's say you pull a ghost rare from your first pack in your first box in a Rage of Ra case. I don't think you can safely assume, the other 250 packs in the case are definitely not going to give you a ghost rare. Idk, I could be wrong though, and Konami might really make sure every case has only one ghost rare, but i've never seen any evidence of that. Great video my dude!

The ultimate rares being OTS pack exclusives really was a great move. Most people would agree ultimate rares look incomparably better to any other rarity, so pulling one out of packs that you legitimately won from good play is extremely rewarding. It also prevents the problem we always get with re-sellers inflating the prices of cards because OTS packs aren't for sale legitimately.

So if I buy the booster pack I would have hope to get it or just buy the booster box... and hope to get it... Or buy the case of the for the set.. but tbh what I do is just shop on TCGPLAYER or Troll and toad for Ultra Rare and etc... Straight to the point no bullshit.

I think they are worth it. Even though you are “garuntee” a certain ratio of rarities in the core sets, it’s still worth the hunt; you can pull a starlight and be happy or pull a card you can sell, play, keep and be happy. Now the Ra and duelist packs I agree that it’s forcing us to buy packs that really don’t have anything good unless it’s worth a reprint. Now Battles of legends/hidden arsenal packs are a toss up depending on what is being reprinted and worth getting as a super or secret

I think having more chase cards is a good thing overall. It makes opening packs so much more exciting. Just please remember that pack opening is gambling, and you're more likely to neg than plus. If money is tight for you (like it is for so many), don't take the risks. I remember going to my first Sneak Peak ever, Duelist Revolution and pulling that coveted Pot of Duality in my 5 packs. I had looked up the set online the night before and knew it was the card to pull, and I sold it for a lot of money to another person for a lot of cash. I was only 11 and selling that card for so much money gave me such a rush I went and bought another 5 packs with some of it, only to be disappointed opening 5 rares. It's okay to buy packs and get lucky, openings can be really fun, but always keep to a budget. Stay safe friends.

I do think that the tcg does get less love with rarities and such because the distributors try to squeeze more out of us, but when you do pull a super rare card it feels amazing. This why I mostly buy “collections” sets and mega tin stuff.

I think what would be best is the standard main set cards are all easy to get (so, common/super), and high rarities (ultra/secret) would be alternate rarities for "power" cards for collectors (so common and supers are in every pack, and you might get 1-2 ultras in every box and one secret in every 2-3 boxes). So everyone can *play*, and the collectors/power players can get their shinies.

GX to mid 5ds was the golden era of yugioh in my opinion. I honestly stopped keeping up with the sets after 5ds. The elimination of ultimates and ghost as well as fundamental changes to the card design really did it for me.

I think these very rare cards are a great thing, I think valuable collectible items like thousand dragon or starlight rares are much better than having valuable meta cards like lightning storm. Now it would suck if they made a super meta relevant card only available as a starlight rare

I personally think extremely rare cards are a super bad thing. Especially when it's staple cards that you need (infinite impermanence). The main thing that gate many players out of being competitive is that Konami likes to make needed cards extremely rare.

Recently got back into buying Yugioh cards and everything you said in this video is SOOOOO TRRUUEEEE!! I've had some decent pulls, especially in the 2020 lost memories tin (in a sense the cards I pulled paid for how much I spent buying the tins). But really I find it very rewarding to buy from Facebook Marketplace. I bought someones collection and after pricing everything I can make quite a bit of my money back and have loads of nostalgic cards.

As someone who only collected through RDS and came back to the game in 2018, having the starlights etc. is a really nice incentive as opening packs is exciting for me and I’m not as interested in playing the game. That said, there needs to be some way to de-incentivize people from opening cases and selling the “leftovers”. As an example, what if Konami printed starlights such that you’re twice as likely to pull it from a blister pack as opposed to a box? The inherent randomness of opening blisters makes it unlikely stores will open loads of them since there’s no longer the guarantee of secrets/ultras they can price as singles to offset the cost of opening boxes as opposed to selling sealed. It incentivizes casual collectors who can’t afford cases to still buy cards without fear of being scammed. And, for those who want to try to “guarantee” their pulls, single boxes and cases are still available for those who can afford it. It makes stores less likely to scam, helps deflate the price of booster boxes, and pseudo-increases the chance of pulling a starlight for casuals who just want to open packs for collection’s sake without possibly unknowingly being scammed. The other option, of course, is to be able to buy single booster boxes from Konami directly but that seems less feasible.

That might be true for side sets and anything between Dark Neostorm/Eternity Code, but in the main sets there are still cards worth going after, or, will be worth going after with Eternity Code, Rise of the Duelist, even Phantom Rage. The problem is when sellers do the same thing as mentioned here, but with individual packs. They map out the packs with the Secrets and Ultras and sell the rest online in bulk tricking people into thinking they can pull their money cards. That is the biggest problem with this rarity sort, and why everyone now only buys sealed boxes, because as you said there is no surprise. And there is no chance of getting what you need from packs sold online, because the minute you click 'buy' you've been scammed. Cimoooooo even talked about it.

Veeeerrrry recently got back into the YGO scene. Not competitive play but simply buying products. Bought the tin of lost memories the other day just cause, and lost my shit when I got Red Eyes Dark Dragoon. Gave me that euphoric feeling I used to get when I was younger and opened packs.

I just want the next duel devastator to have forbidden droplets, triple tactics talent, and lightning storm. It’s almost impossible to play a rouge strategy without them. I would rather not have to drop over $900 just to play competitively.

Thank you, Paul, and the guys, for always being honest with us! It means a lot especially when some of us are on a limited income and go into pack openings hoping for some chance at luck. I recently bought two of the tin of memories 2020 mega tins and it was rough since the rarest card I got that was once $40, now sits right under $15. Thankfully it was money for my birthday but if you asked me if I would do that again? It would be a no from me lol.

I like the points addressed in the video. The game now a days just feels too expensive to play. Wanted to build a fossil fusion deck but I don't have the cash to buy more than one box. To be 100% i mostly just collecting cards from the anime or cards related to decks in the anime. This year's mega tins were just ok. The dragons of legend should have made getting toon kingdom easier. Went to my local card shop and bought 1 box rage of ra and pulled the ghost rare ra. The reason I bought this set was for the new ra support. Marik was my favorite villain. Wanted to pull god slime. Liked my pulls though.

I think the other thing to keep in mind about content creators doing pack openings, is many of them are sponsored, and it's possible that they are being provided packs to open for content, which makes the cost of trying to hunt down these extremely rare cards, far lower for content creators, than for the average joe.

Interesting - I was thinking the same thing about the Ra packs. It's all bulk (coming soon to Dollarama packs)! Even though, many people thought the 2020 tin was overhyped, I did end up buying quite a few because it has a lot of cards I needed to finish off a couple of decks. Ended up with 6 Pots for my trouble! :)

I think one of the hypothetical "pros" is that theoretically more product will get opened to chase these super rare cards and it will cause the value of the rest of the set to be more affordable to players since there are more cards out there. This was a thing with MTG's Masterpieces for a time. The amount of a set was opened more and it had larger supply of all other cards in the market, lowering the price of cards. However, it can also cause regular players to crack open way too many packs in order to hunt for these, which we already have problems with some players not being able to control their...gambling-esque habit when it comes to pack opening. I think overall it is fine to have these exclusive cards, BECAUSE there are lower rarity versions of the same cards, like with Pokemon's Ultra and Secret rares. If this was the ONLY way to get these cards, then there would be way more problems.

idk, searching for a rare cards is always a bad idea if we think in terms of money and competitive skills, the better thing is to buy the single card. BUT the feeling of pulling a card, or the feeling of pack openings is totally different, so i think it depends on your possibility to spend money and your will of finding that card.

Totally agree. BLAR, Toon Chaos, and the Dragons of Legend sets were all poor sets sold with chase cards. You KNOW that Konami know this when they pick a popular card from ye olden days that has no meta relevance, shiny it up with a hype new rarity, and drop it in a set. They will do it with Blue-Eyes or DMG eventually and it people will go nuts. All of that said, I believe the sealed boxes/cases of this stuff will be profitable long-term investments for those with big buying power, as the chase for these rare cards will never really end. It's not like when a $100 meta card gets banned or power-crept out, and the set loses its value. Sets like BLAR and TOCH will always hold appeal for gamblers.

I'm someone who buys a random box everyone now and again. I usually buy from sets that, have more useful cards in them in a sense. But I'm never in it for anything special, sometimes it just nice to see what I get. So when I do pull a Starlight Rare or something like that, it one of those jaw dropping moments because of how bad the odd of pulling one off a random box is. I've only ever gotten one keep in mind, but I only been doing this for a little less than a year now. But I'm unsure if I should sell or keep the one I have. Especially since the card just got a UR reprint in the 2020 tin.

These reaction videos you’re describing reminds me of those loot box opening videos that are still rather popular that were (rightfully) criticized for the same reasons. Only for those, it’s not just “makes money back because they’re a content creator” but also “shady back alley deals where the game company purposefully rigs the odds in content creator’s favor more so than what a regular person would expect”. I love TCGs and pack openings are definitely a part of the game but it’s left a bad taste in my mouth in recent years as I hear more and more horror stories about loot boxes. I know they aren’t the same thing but they’re not that far apart.
