Even with dry/eczema prone skin I'm managing to use the 0.5% retin a. The secret is to build it up slowly. I started to use it once a week and slowly built up to every second night over a period of six months. I cannot use it on my neck so I'm using the ordinary 2% retinol there. On the alternate nights I use the 10% lactic acid from the ordinary for exfoliation. I've rarely had peeling with such careful use and have used a rich moisturiser half an hour after applying the retin a. In order to use vit c in my routine I use it in the morning and wear spf everyday. If my super sensitive skin can tolerate it most people should be able to, but building up tolerance slowly is the key. It's not a sprint - it's a marathon. I wait half an hour after cleansing to make sure my skin is completely dry - I think that's the main way to avoid irritation, as if I've not waited long enough I notice a little peeling round my nose the next day. I hope you find your cat soon - as a cat owner I sympathise with the worry/grief. Best wishes

Thankyou - start once a week for four weeks, then twice a week for four weeks etc and as tolerated. If you've been using a retinol you may find it easier to transition, but be really careful on your neck. I have been completely unable to even build up a tolerance however slowly, it's just too sensitive. I wish you good luck and good skin. Best wishes.

Hi Nadine. - I use Retin A 0.05% every night now and like Lorraine I use Vit C in the morning with an SPF 50 under my makeup. I do find it difficult to find a reasonably prices SPF 50 that sits well under foundation - can you recommend one? I do hope that your cat comes home soon.

What a great introductory video for Retinols! I am 27 years old and I have been using prescription strength retinol for two years now and there's nothing in the world that you can put topically on your skin that would change your skin as much as retinol! I started it because of acne outbreak I had in mid twenties and my dermatologist talked to me about this magical ingredient. Two years later and my skin now looks better than it did when I was younger! I swear by retinols and tell anyone who would listen about them.

To help exfoliate in a peeling stage, I massage my face with a balm like Clinique's Take the Day off balm for about ten minutes while watching tv. I use a very emollient moisturizer at night, and in the morning before I shower I'll use Paula's Choice 2percent salicylic acid as a mask for twenty minutes or so. The salicylic acid helps to loosen the dead skin and get the peeling over with. Then use fingertips or a soft cloth in the shower to get the dead skin off. It's more work, but people are spending more time on skincare nowadays. Just spend it using Retin-A and you won't be sorry. Gals in 40s and 50s don't bother with retinol! I used it for years and it cannot compare to the results Retin-A has given me. Be patient yes - I saw amazing results after a year or so of using it. Since it is working at the molecular level you are not going to see that in a week.

I am 51, gone into an aging meltdown crisis, and have no idea where to start. I responded to this post because I have used Paula's Choice products before and I suppose I feel comfortable with them, saw it mentioned, after overwhelming myself with all of this research. I stopped using an AhA after a while because I was peeling all the time. I was probably using it too much. I have been researching all of this and from what I understand the products to use are retin a, (prescription) a vitamin c serum, hyaluaric acid, niacinimide, possibly COQ10 and some sort of acid/peel. I have a tendency toward sensitive skin, but no oiliness or real dryness. How do I start? The only thing I know is not to combine at the same sitting Vit C or Retin A, or Vit C and Niacinimide and to keep wearing sunscreen (which I do). All advice really appreciated. thanks

Nadine, you are beautiful, charismatic and intelligent. So many You Tube celebrities sound like hacks who cannot pronounce ingredients properly or are too young to know anything about treating wrinkles, crepey skin or loss of firmness. You are a true authority when it comes to skin care and beauty. I love your videos because they are well organized, your presentation is clear and you give bottom line information as to why you love or dislike a product. It is my understanding that you cannot mix Retinol/Retinoic Acid with Vitamin C or AHAs which you explained in your video. However, Paula's Choice and The Ordinary do not consider their Retinols to have any contraindications on their websites. The Ordinary advises against using their L-Ascorbic Acid with Niacinamide or their EUK 134 antioxidant. What happens if you do mix them...do you get a bad reaction or do they just cancel each other out making them inactive? Or is it just each person's opinion?

Thank you for this overview, Nadine! I just discovered your channel and have been watching many of your videos, enjoying your polite, positive and smart explanations. I'm a skincare junkie myself, but as a journalist, always focus on facts and try to avoid the hype. Getting into retinol has been a long journey for me, about 6 years now, but has brought tremendous results. Besides, if i can do it, anyone can do it, because my skin used to be extremely thin, sensitive, with tiny pores and at the same time very acne- prone with lots of sun damage from surfing and fine lines.The kind of skin that reacts to anything from central heating to wind to acids to spicy food. I still remember that it was about 3 years after i first started with retinols when i woke up, looked in the mirror and realised that i looked several years younger and hadn't had break out or irritation for a long time, ie retinol was really working! Today my skin has turned completely around: its much thicker, no redness, hardly any flaking/peeling, less fine lines, hardly any pigmentation, its comfortable, hydrated and bouncy. I'm over 40, but look younger than 6 years ago before starting with retinol. IMO everyone should be able to use retinol, that is if they are careful, very patient, avoid actives overload, fragranced products, alcohol and generally anything that might irritate the skin. I made a massive research into potential irritants before i started, and replaced all my skincare with fragrance, essential and mineral oil and alcohol-free products. Looking back, it was crucial in order to make using retinol even possible for me. The first retinol product i used was Neutrogena Healthy skin night moisturiser, starting from 1 night a week and building up the tolerance for nightly use over 4-5 months. I still remember how much it irritated my skin at the beginning, i was only able to go veeeery slow with it. Plus, I made sure my skin always dried at least 20 min after cleansing before i put the product on it. Then I continued with Indeed Lab Retinol, La Roche Posay and Paula's Choice and The Ordinary, always starting super slow, building up and using low % AHA on alternate nights to get rid of peeling. 2,5 yrs ago whilst abroad i bought my first Retin A 0.025, started again one night a week, building it up to alternate nights, it took about a year. Now I've been using 0.05 Retin A cream for more than a year and can use it every other night without any problems. I use it always at night, after double cleansing with mild product i apply a tonic with 5% AHA and let my skin dry for 20-30 min, then apply Retin A. On alternate nights i use AOs, Ferulic, low Vitamin C & E, sometimes virgin rosehip or marula oil. Once a week now i use AHA 30% peel without any problem. During the day i religiously use broad spectrum spf, always 50 in spring-summer and spf 30 autumn-winter. There is no such thing as going out with less than spf 30 for me anymore.

I am so happy that I belong to this small club with Nadine as a host! So many wonderful ladies sharing their concerns and experiences, knowledge, giving suggestions. Speaking about so many wrong info out there i.e., on the internet. One website says to use products with alpha hydroxy acid for more skin smoothing effect, and other one says not to layer them as it may deactivate retinoids! If you google retinoids they pop up at the top! Even dermatologists are not "on the same page" often (on different issues) and it just adds to the confusion. A few months ago I needed to repurchase the SPF cream and my dermatologist was away. The one I saw said that skin type is only marketing and that we all have the combination dry/oily. I do agree that skin changes due to aging, climate, the season of the year, but she really confused me!
@NadineBaggott7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree Billy and in my 25 years as a beauty editor advice has changed too - but I avoid using retinols and tretinoin with acids as I don't need any further irritation ... and I do not want to dilute or deactivate it ... Are you happy with your skin though, did you see a visible difference? X
@lanternaBGD7 жыл бұрын
Two years ago I just wanted better moisturizing cream.....and I almost fainted when I dived into ingredients, marketing, confusion....And I thought I was doing right things:( I wasn't, but in only few months with BHA & AHA, VitC and simple, over the counter moisturizing lotion, my skin improved 50%. But my sun "baking" when I was younger did the damage - wrinkles! I started, after 2 years of fear from peeling (I spoke about it), with Vitamin A (Stieva-A generic name) 0,05% and will go slow and alternate carefully with other acids. It will be long journey, but with all of you, good SPF and even better (but gentle) peeling cream, I have no doubts my skin will improve even more. Will keep you posted (and maybe occasionally come here to cry or ask for advice) :)))

The ordinary's 2% retinoid is NOT twice Paula's 1% retinol, as the two are not equal. Retinol is stronger. A 1% retinol equates to about a .020% retin-A, which is the highest you can get in the US without a prescription. Prescriptions start at a .025%.

Using more product does not help it work any quicker (i found this out the hard way lol) I never apply retinols after a hot shower or after exercise when the face is feeling hot and red...I avoid using any harsh ingredients and exfoliants that may irritate the skin even more (especially while the skin is getting use to it) I find that moisturizing is important too (one that hydrates and decreases inflammation) If one likes they can apply a moisturizer (after they apply the retinol) if they are finding that they are very dry and peeling like crazy. There is nothing wrong with that, even some dermatologist/estheticians recommend it ( I am a qualified esthetician). Also one does not need the strongest retinoid for it to be effective which is great to know!! All in the name of beauty lol I found a quote the other day which said " It's important to send the message to women that there isn't an age limit on beauty" Gee that made me feel good lol I am looking forward to your next video! x

Oh my! I hope your cat came home. My cat was a roamer in his youth, it was quite interesting when I had a GPS collar on him for a while to see where he was going (until he managed to get it off in a vacant lot in my neighborhood where I never could find it). I know how awful it is waiting and wondering if your kitty is okay. I love The Ordinary - such a refreshing approach to skincare. I like that they don't claim mermaid tears or crushed pearls are going to magically reform your skin; just scientifically proven ingredients and simple packaging (though I do agree a pump or tube would be better for the retinol).

Thanks Nadine, I just jump here from Lisa...I'm 64 using Tretinoin 0.05% since 5 years and see result, oh dear! Last month I asked my Dermatologist whether I could increase to 0,1% and she told me that for photo ageing is not necessary, it will increase the peeling and side effects, without any result in what we are looking for. This percetange is ok only for acne....I trust her...we grow up together.... Therefore, stick every single night in my 0.5% and for neck and decollete I use Retinol by Peter ThomasRoth (understad you dont like jar/bottle)...Recently I come thru The Ordinary, and place and order both for their retinoid 2% and suspended Vitamin C 23 %...they are still processing my order, and I am patient :-).... I live in Shanghai, but I am Italian, and really pleased to meet you. Love, Annarosa xoxo PS: I am fan of Paula Choice, but so difficult to get their product in Shanghai. AS for Tretinoin, India Produce a very stable Tretinoin, named RetinA Usp...check on On line Pharmacy....Just for your pocket ;-) xox

I've been using prescription tretinoin 0.05% for over two years now. I built up slowly starting once a week for 4-5 weeks then two times a week for 4-5 weeks until I'm up to every night. I followed Angie's (hot and flashy channel) advice for starting retin, same great advice asNadine is giving. Just now found your great channel! My dermatologist says that there are no studies that prove Tretinoin cream higher than 0.05% does any better on the face for wrinkles. So I'm still at that strength. I do get pealing from time to time so I skip a night of prescription tretinoin and use CeraVe skin renewing serum. I also can't use tretinoin on my neck so I use the CeraVe serum. I will order The Orindary 2% retinol to try on my neck. I am now subscribed to your channel Nadine, keep up the great skin care information. Hope you find your cat soon.

One more Slavic girl here :) Ladies, if AHA & BHA (Paula's Choice) are causing my skin peel (I must use mild scrub every second day!) I gues I would look like a snake with Retin A! I have it, it is "staring" at me from my makeup table, but I am afraid. I must go to work and spend lots of time out of home. To have red, peeling, irritated skin is not an option (have very sensitive skin). Even women who are using Retin A for years are experiencing occasional or frequent peeling patches. Other retinoids are so week and who knows how much, if at all, skin transforms it to Vit A. I wish if my skin is less sensitive and if I could get few months off to experiment:)

Sorry, forgot another issue: due to menopause the fine hair above my upper lip and chin must be removed at least once a month if not twice. I use Veet cream (waxing or threading are out of question as they cause horrible redness and small, red pimples for days and days!). I get RED like lobster after the cream removal, but it goes away after 10-12 hours. I can't pluck them they are so fine and lots of them. Laser will be costly and not sure if and after how many treatments they would be gone :(

I use Retin-A on my face, but it's a def. NO on my neck. Would you recommend this Differin OTC here from the states over The Ordinary? I'm confused by the fact that their website recommends their own 2% Retinoid delivery system over the 1% pure retinol. I do have the Differin here staring at me to try, lol. Can I ask you about the ingredient Solubilized Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate that is in the Advanced Retinoid 2% serum from the Ordinaries. I've heard it is a relatively new ingredient and is an ester of retinoic acid and there is not much research done on it so it may not work as effectively as they are advertising?
@lindamccreadie76577 жыл бұрын
Jessica O Sullivan I use this too and although it's good value I know it's a lot milder than people think. It's not 2℅ retinol, as you say it's an advanced retinoid, which is very mild. I've been using it since October, and can't see much difference in my skin tbh (and I use it every night.) I will probably continue to use it though, as maybe it will just take longer to have any effect.

Hi Jessica It is a relatively new ester of retinol known to cause far less irritation ... and has been proven to help skin cell turnover and hydration in small scale studies, but you are right it is NOT as well tested as other forms of retinol - I say try it at the price it is offered and if it doesn't give the result that you want go back to the other brands you know and trust ... I would never say this if it wasn't so cheap ... hope that helps X

After 1 dropper bottle I wanted to try the Good Genes and see why everyone raves about it and I can Honestly say after finishing the 30ml size of Good Genes I went back to The the Ordinary's 10% Lactic Acid because I missed the smoothing and level of lightening it offers.

Thanks for this Nadine it was really interesting, I have started using The Ordinary Retinol and am not having any reaction so far, my question is, why do we have to go to an expensive dermatologist to get Retin-a which is not very expensive, it's all very well you tubers and beauty editors going on about Retin a but we can't get hold of it! It is very frustrating! As you can probably tell, I'm British! 😀

Angela Davies - Yes you can. I also live in the UK and use ReliableRXPharmacy who sell both in cream and gel form (cream is usually for anti-ageing and gel for acne) without prescription. I got the 'heads up' from American users and have ordered it twice with absolutely no fuss or problem. It's super cheap - $5 which is just over £4 and it arrives within days or ordering. You can get it in all 3 strengths.

Hi Valerie - sorry not to have replied sooner. Didn't know you had left a message. In answer to your question - no! there are no extra taxes and just a flat rate of 12$ (just under £10) and that's it. It's a great site and they have good communication if you need to ask any questions. They assign a personal assistant to you. If I can be of any further help, please don't hesitate to ask. Just as a side note: there is a 'prescription' part if you order, (as some people use this pharmacy to fill prescriptions) but you just answer 'No' to the couple of questions and that's it. (I had contacted them to ask if you needed a prescription and they said 'no', just to do as I have suggested.)

Neutrogena has their new Ageless Intensives Deep Wrinkle (an intensive treatment with Retinol SA and multi-vitamins). SA is not Salicylic Acid but I can't remember what it stands for - sustained action. The products are closer to $20. I thought the Ordinary had a 10% AHA?

Hi Nadine! Loved this video! I'm buying my Retin A (retirides) from a Spanish pharmacy online for £14 a tube! Just starting using it in Jan and I'm determined to stick with it! I'm not having any severe peeling, so I'm lucky! I've started using my Ordinary HA a after cleansing, then my Retin A an hour or so later, then (from the advice of The Ordinary) the Rose Hip oil about half an hour later. My skin is definitely 'feeling' much smoother, but I've loads of sun damage so imagine it'll take me MONTHS to see a decent improvement! Seems we're going through this together! Can't WAIT to start seeing results! 👍💞👍

Hi there, I am english but live in Brazil where you can buy it OTC, I am now using maximum strength 1.0 and my skin just keep getting better. I am 52 but people think I am in my late thirties, I absolutely love this stuff. Thanks for the great videos.

Differin has just been made available as an OTC gel here in the states. It's more affordable and easier to obtain since you don't need a prescription. It was previously prescription only and is now available at our local drugstores. For the retinal in the dropper bottle, I buy small dark glass bottles with spray pumps on Amazon and keep those types of products air safe in them. 👍

I use .07% tretinoin with 5% azelaic and 4% niacinamide from Curology. They ship it every 2 months in an airtight pump and I keep it in the fridge.

Hi Nadine! I'm in my late 30s, been using retinol since my teens, really love it and advocates it to everyone that asks me how I take care of my skin. I gave a break to the prescription retin-A to try The Ordinary and I'm very happy with it but I had the same worries about packaging as you! I also have the Vitamin C from the brand and thought the formula was to thick for the drop bottle. The stuff doesn't come out! Anyway, I saw that they changed the packaging so hopefully they will change the retinoid one as well. Fingers crossed!

I'm 63 and have recently started using The Ordinary retinoid emulsion. Stable doors and horses come to mind. I have been layering it with Buffet and then moisturiser - sounds as if I'm getting it all wrong. As I use it every night how else do I get my very dry skin hydrated. Love your no-nonsense videos and hope your cat comes back, they can be such worrying little buggers when they take a holiday. x

Up Mayo I think Nadine means that you're not to combine your retinol nights with the nights you apply acids and Vit C - way too harsh for the skin. But clarification would be appreciated.
@NadineBaggott7 жыл бұрын
Up Mayo I think Retinol should be used in its own at night - if you need moisturiser leave thirty minutes before you apply it and (the rosehip oil from the Ordinary might suit you) use the 23% vitC on alternate nights which is super greasy and hydrating xxx

Hi Nadine TSKIA (the skincare know it all, heehee) 😊. Thank you so much for this and all your other videos - I’m dazed & confused with the billions of products available, and yours are the only explanations I trust. They are easy to understand, but scientific enough, to give me the confidence to sit and enjoy them without feeling like I should be on guard for some subliminal sales pitch! You’re so pretty and classy, you are inspiring me to make more effort with my own health & appearance 😊. Sorry if you read a similar comment from me on all your videos, having just found you, I’m watching all your videos even from a couple of years ago! Thanks again and please keep uploading content 💐😍👩💻👩🔬👸🌻

Thank you for all the great advice, your skin looks beautiful. I have been using Differin gel for acne and anti-aging. Acne has cleared up very nicely and skin looks good. No peeling or irritation. Does this work as well as Retin A? I am 45 but skin looks much younger by at least 10 years.

Love this Nadine. I've avoided retinols because I didn't understand them and didn't want to waste time/money on products that weren't right for me. You've fixed both issues in this video! Could you do a quick derma roller review at some point?

Retin-A cured my acne in my 20s. Now I'm approaching 50 I am back using Retinols but not as pure as Retin-A. Just bought the Ordinary 2% today so I hope my skin likes it. Great video and channel - thank you!

I'm in mid 40 I used Retin a cream at 18 with severe acne. I will endeavour to try it again for my aging skin today . I do remember the peeling and hated it .
