I think the fascination with skin color is because so much of the history with people of color was erased or denied not taught in schools. That is why videos like this are important because it sheds light to people of color who were rulers powerful good or bad. So many Black inventor scientists that have contributed with things that have changed our world but never credited. I thought I saw somewhere that Caracalla wore make up to lighten his skin which is reflected in the movie not sure if there is truth to that. As always excellent video I knew you was going to slay this one. Thank You.

i thought he was called the black emperor because he was a bad person. i didnt know ancient rome went off of societal descriptions that were made up in the 1600s in virginia. i thank hollywood for reminding me that i am wrong for thinking it didnt matter what people looked like to romans, it only mattered if they were born in the roman empire, greece or egypt instead of the barbarian world. and if they paid taxes or tribute. cant forget that part.

History can be so floppy with things. Like the "Black Prince" Edward of Woodstock. No one knows why he is called that
@tatianaoliveira219113 күн бұрын
Some historians think he was called ''Black Prince'' because of the black armour that he wore.
@Heikkiman10 күн бұрын
I’ve heard that it was the armor. For Alexander the Greats general Kleitos the Black it was because there was another dude named Kleitos as well and then he was called the white. Sometimes it was hair color and often I think it was if someone was evil but I don’t remember any actual examples. One bishop was Black because I think he was Ethiopian so it the reasons were all over the place for sure.

Most sources say that Macrinus was an Algerian Berber. He could have had sub-saharan black ancestry, who knows... but the sources I've seen so far say that he was a North African Berber (Amazigh)
@johnathanfindlay911211 күн бұрын
Given that Algeria is North of Sahara that’s the odds. That said though are we really calling out Gladiator II for historical inaccuracy? Did you see the first one? I would also point out that when you have an actor like Denzel and you can cast him you give the man the gig because he will bring it. I am white and younger than him, and if Denzel wants to star in my hypothetical biopic as myself give that man the role. Edit: Given the region and the historical records quality in general you would still just be playing odds.
@MedjayCommander10 күн бұрын
It's sad that you would need the ancient entire world to be white, even in Afrika where if you knew anything about the place there is really no such thing as Sub-Sahara, let alone a Sub-Saharan Black (as you call it), the Sahara comes and goes every 25K+ years and Afrikans are over 300k years old, where as Europeans only paled in NORTH WESTERN EUROPE 6-7K years ago, meaning North Afrika (as ancient Historians (you know the Greek and Roman kind) has said at nosism that the people there were Ethiopian, not be confused with the modern state of Ethiopia). So the WESTERNIZED foolishness of North Afrika being white (let alone Arab) is western racists non-sense.

You know that Arabs conquered North Africa 400 years after Macrinus death. He was definitely not an Arab. North Africa was colonized first by Greek, then by Phoenicians, then by Romans, then by Germans... It would be closer to reality to call Macrinus German. At least the Germans (Vandals) came just 100 years after Macrinus and not 400 years.

I havent seen one on your channel yet, if there is lemme know and ill watch it. But I think itd be cool to hear you cover the Greco-Persian War. Leonidas has always been one of my favorite military heroes, and the movie 300 does a terrible job at showing what happened. Yeah this is sparta was cool, but otherwise that movie is like 90 percent fiction. I see you've done a couple videos showing movies compared to reality so i thought that might be a good one if you need any ideas lol and like i said i just think Leonidas was one of the original gangster of warfare.

All North Africans are mixed race. In the 2nd century, the North Africans were predominantly Caucasian. There were several statues made of Macrinus during this period. He was clearly, a Caucasian man of some mixed ancestry. Basically, he was similar to many lighter skinned North Africans, that are about 80% Caucasian. This Movie Gladiator ll completely misrepresents the likeliness of Macrinus. He was a Caucasian man of some mixed ancestry.

What do you mean "seated". If you mean created than no...if you mean "ancient" than no again (their exploits were pretty recent relatively speaking. Mainly 7th century onward). There is this trend of mythologizing of actual history being popularized mainly by the "we was kangs" American types. It is very weird. I think, if after the historical Marcus Arellius... if the alternate history displayed by this movie were the timeline we would have traveled down... If in that incredibly unlikely set of circumstances we still found ourselves in the divisive politics of today, if we would have come down the time line from this sequel (cause it sure as shit ain't a reboot, but a generational sequel) then, there would be no room for a would be tyrant like Donald fucking Trump.
