My only diving experience was while I was stationed at Midway Island. It was with the US Navy, but recreational so we were kind of over supervised. We mostly just went after lobster, there were just a couple of spear fishermen. What was interesting, and very dangerous was we used to put our lobster in a mesh bag, we used a Hawaiian Sling to spear them, put them in the bag and move on, working to fill the bag. This would attract sharks because we would leave a trail of blood, and once I had a large shark rip the bag completely off of my weight belt. Afterwards when we noticed the sharks following us, we would quit and go to the surface. This was 1981-82, and recreational scuba diving was relatively new to the island, but it is surprising how quick the sharks learned what we were up to and would follow us around picking up scraps. Thank you for the video!

It's always at your own risk - lesson learned. Watched lots of videos like yours before my last trip spearfishing in Abaco a couple weeks ago. I've got 11 stitches in my leg that would say the same rules don't apply there. The doctor stitching me up said she stitches up shark bites every few months there and it's the same story every time: Someone spears a fish, has the fish close to their body, and the shark bites them. The locals all say the same thing. If a shark comes in after you spear a fish, give up the fish.

I believe sharks, just like any other large predator, are a danger. But we humans have killed most of the agressive ones. That's why most predators are scared of us. Scientists say sharks are not a threat. That's false. We've made sharks not a thread and they could become a threat again if it was a viable strategy to be aggressive. So I would argue that the best policy would be to kill any shark that gets too close.

Great video! I have had many run-ins with Sharks from Bulls to Great Whites. Tigers & Great Whites do not leave you alone if you bring the fish to you but, they are not senseless maneaters either. When you are spearfishing you have to get over your fear of sharks but you have to always respect them as they can cause severe damage or death. You are so right when you say that if you get to a spot and sharks are charging you from the beginning, you should not shoot any fish and move to another spot.

@@KeyWestWaterman I was diving the tunnels in Jupiter. It is a well known place for a school of aggressive reef sharks..had a mutton and yellow jack on my stringer. Was swimming down the reef and started getting pulled from behind. I thought it was my buddy messing with me. Looked between my legs and a reef had my yellow jack in its mouth. Turned around put my hand on its nose trying to get him to let go. While messing with this one a second one cane in hit my gun knocked it out of my other hand and then grabbed the mutton. So now I'm in a really big fight and couldn't believe but a third one grabbed one of my fins. So now I'm definitely in bad shape. My buddy has it all on gopro he was trying to get close enough to shoot one. And you can see right. When he stretches out trying to insure a good shot because I'm in the middle of this fiasco all of a sudden they ask let go and return to there circling behavior that they usually do. I do have to say it was nerving but after it was all over and you think back how pin point there accuracy is that they never even touched me in these attacks they want the fish not us. And I'm sure my fins was mistaken identity flipping around trying to fight off the others. But this was the craziest deal I have been in and just thought I would share it. After it was over and my buddy finally made it to me and a couple big breaths with sighs of relief returned to the bottom retrieved my gun and surfaced to go to another spot.

Awesome video Aaron! I've personally never had any run ins with sharks other than nurse sharks because I mostly dive for lobsters. The only exception was snorkeling I saw a huge hammerhead but I got out of the water there tbh 😂😂😂. Thanks for the video!

Great video! Great advice! I’m a diver here in Barbados and I take along my speargun on dives to get barracuda for personal consumption. I’ve met some big hammerheads and bulls. I always keep my eyes on ‘‘em when I see them. At the end of the day we aren’t the apex predators in their habitat🤙🏾🇧🇧

one little advice : be really careful with bulls ( your already obvisoulsy ) i have a theory with them is that in florida// caraibes water : theres so much fish that they are nice and mellow be cause they know they will eat somehow. but some other places in the world with less fish, they are known to be really dangerous they are fearlesse and very agressive Recife in brasil, new caledonia and reusion island are places where bullsharks are HORRIBLE : attacks swimmers, surfer /bodysurfer and kiters ( and charge spearers ) i know cose i lived there and lost a friend eaten by a bullshark, sadly (20+ severes attacks in reunion island, nearly all bullsharks ) keep it up your great content

The sharks have gotten so bad in the Mayport inlet its become impossible to fish the bull red run. I think it's much to do with the shrimpers and them dumping their by catch. The sharks literally follow them all the way to port.

Nice one...where i dive sharks are rare but from videos like these wen an encounter do take place you could remember and try to keep calm. From other videos really see the lemons are like glue lol.. do mangroves that size always be mid water or its a timing or just the spot?
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
it honestly all depends. I "normally" only see them like that on certain spots.
@Metrikon90002 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this was a very informative video. Normally when you see sharks interacting with spearfisherman, you see the shark charging head on, and the fisherman defending themselves with the spear. It's always so dramatic. What you rarely see are all of the times that the sharks charge, then back off when they realize you are not a fish. It is obvious from this video that the shark is not after you. They want the fish, because that is their food source. Like any predator, they are going to go after injured or struggling prey. 100% opportunist hunters. They are dangerous, of course, but in no way purposefully aggressive or malicious. Be cautious, alert, and respectful, but never afraid or hateful towards these amazing creatures.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
yup! very misunderstood the situation can be, doesn't mean you can't get bit. but they normally aren't after us.

Stay WOKE, even when free diving, see the ocean isn’t one to play with, as a common (sense) thinking spear-fisherman, what my elders have told me is that when I’m out in the water,To always make sure I fish not only responsibly but with an aware and experienced partner. (ALWAYS) stay relentless everybody🤙🏼 fish normal wid the buddies👀💯

Hey Aaron. When sharks bite the shaft in the process of eating your fish, does it damage the shaft? To what extent? How many times does it typically take for you to have to replace the shaft? Thanks. Love your vids.

It did not damage the shaft. Just a quick bite! And it all depends on the situation. Shafts normally last a while!

Been diving with them. My wife and I get as excited over seeing sharks as we do porpoise, rays, turtles, barracudas, etc. No fear but just a sense of adventure and opportunity to see some cool critters. Sharks are the high point of our dives especially if we can get close. Treat them like you would a strange dog. Stand your ground, don’t run/swim scream, panic, or carry on. Defensive posture and don’t give them an opportunity to think that you are anything more than a bad decision on their part to do anything but move along. Respect.

Nice video, thank you. Would love to come out on a charter one day. Speared New South Wales, New Zealand (mercury Islands) and Fiji but never Florida. Good to know there are carters there. Worth mentioning that these are videos in clear water, which I find makes the encounters much more predictable. My usual encounter is a Bronze Whaler sliding by close out of nowhere when I am on the bottom or fired up after a king fish I have shot. Also, other people in the water is always great if you can get it. The people to shark ratio is an important factor.

Awesome 👏 video! Aaron can you explain how you to tell if it’s a reef shark and a smaller bull 6’-7’. At Looe reef the reef shark (I think they are reef) always follow me like like a dog😅. Obviously I’m NOT spearfish but they have come all the way to the surface that I had pull my knees in and separate my fins to miss his dorsal fin, he was was moving nice and slowly 😳LOL! I’m from the Midwest and I’m sure he could feel my heart beat, but was an amazing dive! As you can see I’m not at home with the sharks as you.
@KeyWestWaterman2 жыл бұрын
Haha! And the bulls are just more round in general. The nose is a little more rounded and stubby. They are very girthy compared to a reef who is gonna have a more pointed nose. And thinner all around.

I'm strictly a hook and line guy up in Jacksonville and the bulls and barracuda are a real pain in the ass in the summer or out where the water stays warm, I've been known to eat them as it seems there is no shortage of them. The smaller ones are not bad if you treat them properly, good fish to give to the neighbors.
