I use to own a snail named Lenny (found him in my yard) he would bubble because he was stressed but when I just let him slither on my arm and fed him he got really comfortable and made snail mucin . I had him before I got into skincare and even then I wouldn't use him for cosmetic purposes. I let Lenny go after 2 years and he came back to show me he found a mate

I understand being skepitcal about snail mucin, I am too, but I don't think that all companies are lying when they say that it's cruelty-free. Snails produce more mucin when they are happy than when they are stressed, and the mucin they produce when healthy is a higher quality. So from a business standpoint it would be easier to keep the snails in good condition.

Agreed. And I associate the level of electrical impulse tge snails are getting to us using a TENS unit for muscle tension/pain and at a optimal level it's beneficial and helps relax the muscles. Now granted you could say on the flip side of that if the TENS unit is too high it could cause the opposite. But I would assume it's the former for the snails since they're producing larger quantities and of higher quality as well. I just hope the increased demand doesn't change that cruelty free process.

@aprioriontoast704 8 ай бұрын
@@DoItWrightRo I don't think that is true , even if a snail is under stress they still need to produce mucus in order to keep themselves moist or else they dry out, a snail that is dead doesn't all of a sudden lose that mucus unless you let their bodies dry out. There would need to secrete more mucus when they move however , which they will do when they are not hiding in their shells but that does not mean they are immune from stress when they are choose not to hide, it's just hiding is the best way to avoid a predator because they are so slow.

@@aprioriontoast704 You’re definitely entitled to what you “think”. I’m simply reiterating what Cassandra and other experts have mentioned. Of course the mucin is available if they die…. The quantity produced is not…. What I am saying is a fact not a feeling. The experts have discussed this over and over again. They produce it when they are in danger which causes “stress”, “pleasure”, and when they are protecting themselves. They do not continue to secrete if they are no longer alive, I.e. dead. Snails release the mucin then they are placed on a farm for 3 months according to Cassandra’s report, and used again. Do I think this is cruel? Yes, but I am speaking of the process used by manufacturers, nothing more, nothing less.

Thank you so, so, so much! This video is really needed. I was also wondering how the snail mucin was extracted. There are other questions as well: where do those snails come from? how long is their lifespan compared to the lifespan of free snails? do they die at the farms/factories or free? if they are set free at some point, then what point is that and where are they delivered? if they die at the farms/factories, how do people dispose of them? - and so on. I am afraid that answers to such questions won’t be able to justify the use of snail mucin in skincare.

Put in a couple snails (it's technically kidnaping, but since they are considered pests and killed, they are better off with you anyway). Step 3. Take them home and let them take a walk on your face from time to time. You now have great skin and new pets (from pest to pets 😂)

Well even if that's the case, it still shows how little they care about the animals' welfare. If they do have an 100% trauma free way of extracting it, wouldn't they want everyone to use it if they wanted all snails to be treated well? They either don't or don't care about the animals and either situation is despicable.

@@raha5527 I can appreciate the place that your comment comes from but do you truly think this is a fair assessment? I think (just my opinion) that it would be fair to say that you don’t want to use it because fear of the unknown but I think one clear takeaway from this video is that we don’t have enough information. If a company has put millions of dollars into developing a product I, personally, don’t see anything wrong with them wanting to protect the proprietary value of that product. That said, I do think they need to be held accountable for business practices with regular inspection just not necessarily opening it up to the general public. See I kind of think of it this way zoos, on the surface, seem like barbaric inhumane institutions. And while I might not agree with all their practices I do see value in what they do. Generally someone doesn’t become a vet or a zookeeper because they hate animals…. There are certain animals that can’t be rehabilitated, and they do important research and spreading awareness. I think it’s dangerous to form opinions without facts. I know you didn’t ask for my opinion, and you’re completely entitled to yours. I 100% believe you’re coming from a place of concern for the creatures. It’s a frustrating topic. For me in particular, because I often have to check myself for getting upset with “elitist vegans” who feel they don’t contribute at all to animal cruelty and that isn’t fair to a lot of vegans. They are just doing their part, and nobody can truly live a cruelty free life in this world but at least they are trying the best they can.

A little late to the convo… thank you for your video and the ❤ you clearly have for animals. The sweet innocent babies can’t speak for themselves and need us to do better by them. I actually found this video while trying to find out about the mucin process. Do I think they’re happy? Eh probably for the most part or during their time off.. i think it’s just weird to them to be in this machine, they’re defensiveness may come from the unknown of what could happen. Idk. I’m concerned about the snails, and I wouldn’t use the product if it wasn’t magical.. but the cosrx mucin essence is actually magical. It’s reversed my wrinkles and plumped up my skin, and I break out when I go 3 or more days without it! Now, I’m saying this as someone who used Curology rx, tretinoin rx, and so many others. To date, there’s only 1 product in addition to the mucin that’s worked wonders on my skin. And that’s innerB Aqua Bank Hyaluronic Acid pills- 120mg twice daily (also made in Korea). So the mucin essence and innerB oral supplement are a daily for me unless I run out due to funds. While I do want more info, and I do love animals, I am going to say that yes I think everyone should be using it, or at least giving it a try. I mean it’s magical. So with my limited knowledge on this but being somewhat familiar with snails, I can only say that if they're not closing up into their shells when the substance is sprayed on them, I'm assuming they aren't in physical pain. I picked up some mucin masks in Korea in 2018, but after doing some limited research, I am of the personal opinion that the snails are being harmed, or in the very least, being unnessecarily exploited. So, even though I'm not a vegan, I try and avoid any animal exploitation when it comes to my skincare as it just seems unnessecary when we have so many other options. I don't like any living thing to be harmed for my vanity. I highly doubt those snails are having a great time in that contraption and even though maybe they can't feel pain, you have to ask "why' would I do it?

Idk if you read your comments buuut i’m going to give this a try anyway. I’ve commented this on another video but i’d love your feedback!! I have rosacea but i've taken care of it well. Anything that cools my face helps keep the red down. I have a very minor case of it. I don't have dry skin or oily skin. It's very normal skin, but i want my face to be dewey and i'm not sure what to use. I LOVE the hailey bieber skincare routine but i'm scared to use too much product on my face that could cause my rosacea to flare up. Do you have a list of products I could use that would give me that dewey finish without burning or drying out my cheeks (that's where my rosacea is)? A comment just responding with products i should use. I struggle with what to use... And the dermatologists in my area are awful! They were never helpful with what products to use and only made it worse. I love to do face masks and exfoliating twice a week and i'd love to know what you'd recommend for someone like me... i'm going to college soon and would love to have the products i need before i leave... I've been watching your videos and I think you are the most educated person i've seen when it comes to skincare and i'd love to see your routine/product recommendation for me!! Also!! I don’t wear makeup a lot, but i will on occasion and idk what to use. I hate using makeup wipes. I can just feel how bad they are for my face, but idk what else to use.

whether or not the snails are “happy” doesn’t matter much, feels to me like they’re breeding animals to stimulate and steal their discharge… pretty gross tbh. I mean if you’re assaulting someone and they discharge during it should we be debating if they’re enjoying it or not?🤷🏼‍♀️ I think there’s more than enough skincare products that we dont need this😪

For me, personally, although the idea behind the creation of this video is nice, the execution was not the best. The few notes I can make are: The information you provided was nothing "special" as the title mislead me to believe due to the fact that you mentioned first-person experience in South Korea. Truth is, unfortunately, you didn't really presented "an answer" to the question that interests us all. Which is not your mistake. There just isn't any solid "proof," and everything for the moment is a mystery. On top of that, I found your descriptions of the machines that they used a little bit confusing (maybe because English is not my native language). So, at the end of the day, the topic stays open for discussion. Something that I wanted to mention is that animal byproducts "go to waste" if the animal that is killed is used only for the meat/food industry. For me, it's kinda like they died "for nothing" if something (certain product made with the byproducts) that can be used is not utilized. That being said, I don't support the killing of animals and the meat industry! ✌🏻 Everyone is free to support and believe in what they want. There is no need to attack each other in general. The key really is education. ⚠️THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, so if someone doesn't agree, that is totally fine. If someone wants to correct me or add something, they can feel free to do so IN RESPECTFUL MANNER! Additionally, I want to clarify that I'm in no way attacking or being rude to Cassandra!!! All I'm doing is expressing an opinion. I love the videos that are uploaded on this channel, and I've learned so much. 💙 I hope everyone has a great day/peaceful night!

As a fellow vegan, I LOVE that you made this video. I’ve been struggling with cystic acne baaaaadly for a few years now. In order to avoid taking anything internally, I quite literally tried EVERYTHING (not just topically, but also with clean diet and increasing water intake). Snail mucin was the very last thing I tried (because my face was in so much pain), but very begrudgingly for this exact reason, I was unsure of how it was extracted. Even after reading COSRX’s method, I still felt guilty using it. Well, turns out it didn’t work for me anyway and now I’m on a high dose of spiro in conjunction with some Rx topicals. In any case, I appreciate the video because every point you made and every question you asked are exactly the same ones I would have.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

You changed my mind on this, I recently bought the Peach slices and it's amazing it feels great, but seeing this now I just cant I feel so bad and I can't in good conscience repurchase, snails are such peaceful creatures seeing them squirm due to stress looks so freakin sad I feel their pain, I get that some people have no choice but to eat them, but doing it in the name of beauty come on, look at the process nothing beautiliful about this, there's better things that don't require you to torture a living creature

This made me so sad :/ I have been on the edge of switching completely but can't afford to do so, I really hate using products that been tested on animals or harm them in anyway. I picked up a holika holika black snail toner at a tj maxx and was using it, its about empty now so I'm good to get rid of it but I don't think I could ever use anything snail again. I love slugs and snails, I dont understand how someone could be so mean to them??? Even if your 'tickling' them, they want to live a normal life too.

I live in the Central Belt of Scotland and, I’m 57, I remember waaaay back in the day that women would do this with their babies’ nappies. True? I don’t know, but, although she was a lot of things, my mother wasn’t much of a liar, especially when we were growing up in U.S. and she wanted us to know what our cousin knew about culture/life, etc. or even if we were to move back. Which I ended up doing at 39.

The fact that a lot of these manufacturers refuse to show how they do it is quite sketchy. And stressing out animals is not cruelty free either as I think we all agree that stressing an animal is cruel. The only method I think could potentially be cruelty free is the electric one where they let out enough voltage to the point snail would feel tingle thinking it's an environment where they need to secrete their slime more....but even after that I would need some good evidence that it's not stressing them out or being painful to them...

Another reason why shutting down snail mucin might not as straightforward as you'd think, especially in asia since people now tend to link snail with korea even though europeans have been eating and using them for just as long. There are snail farms that provide ingredients for traditional asian medicines, and while this sells, it does not make as much money as producing and selling them for comsetic usage. And these kind of thing is often tied with politics, whether you believe it or not.

Thank you for doing this. I think my issue is not just the likelihood that snails are hurt, but that I’m sure they prefer to live out in nature and not in a lab. Makes me sad to think us humans think every other animal is there to serve us and for our benefit. We are a selfish species. I’ll pass on snail products until there’s more transparency. Thanks

I think that is important to know the source for some ingredient. Like, i'm not vegan, but i'm a farmer (only legumes and jams, we can be considerate bio, but we are too small to afford the name "bio" xD) and i'm from Italy (so sorry for the bad english). Here is more simple because we have more small business, so is affordable to treat the animals better, like the example you said in France. I personally know a farmer that do snail mucin and she is cruelty free (i dont know if vegan, but i saw and used some product label vegan with snail mucin) and dont put her snails in washmachines 😂 The secret is to spend more once but you are sure that the animals are treated right, if you want to use some product.

Even before I owned snails (found them in salad… they’re not a native species so I could not set them free), I found the idea of snail mucin cruel. The thing is, no one can 100% accurately claim whether something hurts the snails or not because they do not know why the snail is producing slime. If the snails are writhing and producing slime like in the clips shown here, it does NOT look like they’re ok. I am not am expert, but I don’t believe putting acid or salt on a snail can be pleasant if they’re reacting so strongly. I’ve only ever seen my snails do this when they’re upset. And I do think they can feel pain and also fear. They used to get very scared of me in the beginning and would “grunt” and produce bubbles (i don’t touch them- was just trying to change out their food usually. Just being near them scared them). But now they don’t seem to mind when I change their food and water dishes or clean the tank glass. Also they have different “personalities”. One of them is much more curious and active and the other is more shy and content to just chill in the moss. I think people often underestimate invertebrates, which I find to be really sad. They are still living creatures!

The question is not are they murdered or are they ok since these two are not mutually exclusive. Being tortured and being killed are not the same thing. They can be killed humanely and not suffer. Torturing them is not acceptable. If the ectraction is miserable then it doesn't matter that they aren't killed. If the extraction is not tormenting then i dont mind that they are then killed fir food, as i think they are.
