The main thing that blows me away about solid state amps is how much hate they get for just being solid state.

Ya I think there are just sworn tube guys or solid state guys and there’s just guys like me that don’t really care as long as it sounds cool. I’m just Trying to make stuff sound cool, haha, but what draws me to some of these amps is that they were used on some of my favorite records(tones) from the 90’s. I have some tube amps on my want list as well! Robb Flynn said on his podcast(excellent episode btw Dimebag special) that when they recorded Burn my Eyes they were A/B between dimes tone on vulgar to their tone and he was playing a Peavey 5150. Sounds nothing like it imo but it’s super sick too in its own right🤘🏼

Just acquired an '86 RG80ES carpet head, my first Randall SS, and all I can say so far is WOW. It's making me wonder...why didn't these amps forever dispel the "tube vs solid-state" snobbery that continues to this day? I'm normally a Marshall plexi/tube guy all day, but this Randall just KILLS IT! Oh, and thanks for the informative vids!

Question, you said you didn’t sample it through the clean channel but used it as a clean boost. Does that mean you used it through the distortion channel as a boost? And did you use it through the front or FX loop? Thanks!

A great friend of mine just gave me a Randall RG100 G3 Plus amp, for nothing, he reckons it doesn't work but I think i can get it working again since I have a complete set of schematics for it, the amp uses a JJ ECC81 tube in the power amp to modify how the power amp clips at full power output, it also uses two Celestion speakers.

I’m a die hard solid state guy. I wish they still built amps like this. But lucky for us reverb and Craigslist are keeping my tone stacked. They just don’t build amps for longevity anymore. Cheers! Old crate, Randall, peavey and ampeg ss amps are so sikk!

I have a Randall rg80-112 sc snake skin amp I've looked on reverb musician's Friend in any other site you could think to find this amp no ONE HAS IT!!!! My father bought it for me when I was about 15 years old and he told me to never get rid of it at all this is a classic I still have till this day I have a diamond in the dirt that hasn't been found
When I was a teen in 1985 I bought one because George Lynch was an endorsee, saved all summer in 85 at my dads gas station to buy it, got into a band with a friend of mine that had a Marshall JCM 800 with 1982 cabinets ( 400 watt, 100 watt celestions ) that Randall disappeared in the mix , couldnt get rid of that thing fast enough, come to find Lynch never really used those, maybe a little on Tooth and Nail but thats about it

The Fortin era RG line is quite capable if you understand, Mike Fortin designed them the be boosted up front.. I found the truck load of tone variations by sticking a mxr 108s 10bnd up front.. turn gains on 2-3 down to almost nothing, and starting from there.. "Less is more" with the Fortin RG line Very versatile for everything from 80s, forward, and designed with expanded range guitars in mind.. It's not all that bare bones.. but boost the front? Holy grail.. like a hidden feature that noone wants to talk about.. Boost the front end of a Randall solid state.. DONE!!

Solid amp for sure , I have a rh50t , that sounds completely amazing with a Grunge boost in front of the clean channel that has knocked over other guitars leaning up against front of my 412 cab ! You have to use a Metal Zone through the effects loop, if you wanna use it as your main distortion. It does kick ass as a boost on here, though. I don't feel like this amp really needs anything else, but more firepower is never a bad thing.

@@brokenlevelmusic, as far as I know. When I used one on an old amp head I had, all I did was plug it into the effects loop input in the back. Ola Englund has a great demo video of the Boss Metalzone pedal on here. That's probably more informative than I can be. He does great demos.

I've got an RG75 1st gen and I love the sound but for a 1x12 cab it's huge and heavy. I would love to find an RG100HT or something that can go in a backpack with the same sound and didn't cost an arm and leg.

How did you record the amp without the high gain hiss? I have two of these and I thought it might be a grounding issue. I try to record them and there’s just a stereo hiss as soon as I turn it on. Have you done anything to the amp? How did you record these?

I don't remember exactly the eq but I probable cut some harshness around 4k. I have a noise gate as well, amps are stock to my knowledge. Cab is impulse responses. Thanks for stopping by!

Cool thing about solid state amps is the price! Other than the legendary Ampeg vh140c under the randall in the video are pretty damn cheap. My rental band room has one really cheap ss marshall head and it totally works great for death metal. Marshall valvestate 8100 (used bu Chuck form Death) costs only around 300e and the ampeg goes 400-800 which is crazy because so many big bands have used them for +20 years and the prices haven´t hit the roof!

You honestly don't even need to run a Metal Zone. Just run a boss OD pedal through the red Channel and that'll boost and tighten up your distortion

they where never ment to be a stand alone amp ment hit with a overdrive out front and really get technical about it a 32 band eq in the loop hit any tone desired!

Apparently the RG80ES is still Jimmy Bower from Eyehategod's go-to amp, it's a fucking Sludge Metal machine.

Sounds awesome! But the low end still sounds fake. The sizzle and low end from solid state amps can’t match tubes in my opinion but that’s just my taste 🤪🙂 But it did get pretty rad with the 808!!!
