Thank you for not talking down to cat owners who have concerns about fixing their cats. So many people are hostile when they hear any reservations about fixing. Taking a non-judgmental approach helps so much in making the decision. As an aside: my personal worry of neutering springs from a death of a kitten my parents had. He contracted a urinary tract infection from the neuter and not long after suffered a prolapse. His health wasn't looking good and he had to be put to sleep. I'm not sure the prolapse had anything to do with the neuter, but the infection sure did. It just all took too much out of the kitten. I'll look into trustworthy vets in my area for my own cat now that I know what to look for.

I had a male cat I discovered living in my shed ,I use too leave door ajar and held in place with two. Bricks for any cats left out all night(uk ,lot of folks thinks it’s ok to leave them out all year whatever the weather). He must have been owned. At some point as he was neutered . He was eating seed the birds had spilled of off the table ,and looked. Pretty thin,so I started feeding him. Put up notes ,took him to vet to check for a microchip.No chip. Eventually a guy came round and said the folks who owned him moved and left him behind 😢 So picked him up and and took him indoors . Massive cat . Only thing ever took to killinghekilled was rats,didn’t eat them just killed them Ended up calling him shadow,clouded tabby so hard to see him under the tree shadows. He use to consistently spray up many sections of the wooden fence . He was a big love bug and even let babies and toddlers hug him in their rather unconventional way. Not a bad bone in his body ,unless you where a rat . Ed

Great story! I have that same color female. They really are like a shadow! I ended up naming her 'Misty' because she reminds of a grey, misty day. She is a treasure, but a real handful. She was spayed this morning so it's been an experience since she got home. It's a wonder her incision is still closed! She was wobbly, but it didn't slow her down a bit. I hope tomorrow that she's back to herself. I take it that Shadow isn't here anymore. 😿

My dear Bella was spayed at 1 year old, and I spared no expense for her comfort and surgery. My vet is top notch, her scar was about 3/4 “ with 3 melt away stitches. She went through one heat that was pretty much unbearable with the crying and rutting behaviors. I took her home the next day, she needed no extra pain control or need to wear a cone. She needed a couple of days of rest before commencing her normal routine and came through very well and she is 3 now and doing wonderfully. She is a much better and healthier indoor solo cat these days.

Thank you for this transparent video about spaying and neutering. Looking back, I wish I had been more diligent in vetting the vets who performed surgeries for two cats that were born in my family's backyard. We brought them to a feral cat clinic to get them neutered/spayed, and unfortunately since then, they've each regularly had urinary tract infections every few months, particularly when it seems to be mating season (even after bringing them indoors). Other cats that we've brought to a regular vet's office for the surgery haven't had similar problems, so we figure it must have been the feral clinic doing a less-than-stellar job.

I regret not neutering, vaccinating and transitioning this stray ginger male cat into an indoor only cat so much. He was the sweetest cat I've ever seen, so gentle, even with other cats. He once brought in this momma cat and her kittens to our place, and we fed the entire family for a while. He shortly passed away of feline parvo and there was nothing the vets could do. I believe that there are a lot of things people don't know about the variations that male cats exhibit in parenting their kittens. He was such a sweetheart.

Felines need to be sterilized and that is how you control overpopulation. However neutering tomcats is unnecessary and nothing more than mutilation . You cannot just chop off someones balls without their consent, for your own vanity, not to mention why vets recommend it is just pure profit related. Your tomcat can still get every deadly disease, if you actually understood or cared or respected that cat you would have let it be and instead vaccinate the animal against the deadly diseases. A cat is not a house decoration. Not all tomcats stink and they are primarily in the garden, no problem for them spraying there. You just cut out a major part of this cats life that would have made it full, without it's consent, totally unnecessarily.This goes beyond sexual function, castration impact an animal in many other aspects negatively and again unnecessarily. I wish that vets stop manipulating people for profit.

@@audrey-ji2qq since you two are close and you are his family he leans on you completely, he is an indoor cat. Also this is your experience, often times the cat has permanent visible frustration. In the case of semi feral cats or cats that were mostly outdoors this is a horrid thing to go through that will permanently cripple them in their natural instincts behaviour and routine, leaving them more vulnerable if they can only rely on themselves. Also they are very aware that they have been castrated so are other tomcats, this is often shamed.
@amyrussell8602 жыл бұрын
@@jodi2867 cats don't have the same emotions humans have so please don't anthromorphize (?spelling) them. They don't shame others cats for being neutered. Neutered Tom cats simply aren't going to be fighting with other Tom's. Cats are natural predators so if they live outdoors, they roam as they have to hunt. If they are an indoor/outdoor cats when they go outside they will roam for the same reason. If you have never experienced having a female cat go into a heat cycle or a Tom cat get into fights in your household, you should at least once. You will change your mind fairly quickly about spaying/neutering them. The expense is worth it. The vets at the clinic i go to will at the earliest neuter/spay when a kitten is 5 months old since they are sexually mature at 6 months.
@jodi28672 жыл бұрын
@@amyrussell860 Amy you have no idea who you are arguing with!? Are you a doctor, a scientist? Are you someone who researches animal behaviour and psychology? I bet you could not even solve a math problem from 5th grade, therefore I should label you as a lesser being compared to me and rightfully mutilate you for my own comfort. Damn you are not only ignorant and vain but proud of it. Cats experience the same emotions as humans, and this has been documented many many times, they are fully conscious. Spaying a female is not the same as neutering a male. And castration in particular is useless and outdated evil mutilation in the name of the owners vanity. The facts are that it cannot tacle the population overgrowth problem since, it simply does not work like that, the females are the vehicle and source of that, always will be males who are going to get the unsapyed females pregnant even on a street/block level, as long as there are unsprayed females roaming around. Spaying is absolutely reasonable and just beneficial, the females are thankful for the process and there are no "side effects".However castration is useless and does not tackle anything in reality other than mutilating and making your animal sick mentally and physically. Having no testicles puts one up for poor mental and physical health, period. And this is the case, end of story. Almost all notoriously obese cats are castrated males, no coincidence. There is enormous amount of evidence pointing from owners that the castrated animals mental health becomes a very big problem. I myself conduct research on the material. The animal is 100% aware of it being mutilated this is also proven, and it has to live with the agony for the rest of it's life, also they are shamed. Cats fight irregardless their gender. For example spayed females will keep fighting iregardless. Fightings are harmless mostly, usually just noisy, AS LONG AS THE CAT IS VACCINATED IT IS OKAY. Tomcats need to be vaccinated. Vaccinations eliminate the chance or getting sick from contagious deadly diseases. CASTRATION DOES NOT, your castrated cat can still get these sicknesses. I bet you did not know this one either. Also cats regardless or their gender spray not every one and this issue is tackled by training and not castration. A cat should spend a reasonable amount of time outdoors every day anyways. A cat is not a house decoration. A cat is independent. A cat does not want you to adopt it to be your vanity deco, it is your desire to do so. So instead of treating a living being that experiences the same emotions and is conscious as a toy give it the respect you give yourself. It is useless, evil, vain does not tackle the real issues. Vaccinate it, respect it, communicate with it, build trust and healthy bond and let it be. Never ever castrate, ever.

I have always heard that it wasn't good to have a cat spayed or neutered before he or she was at least 6 months old. About 20 years ago, I "inherited" 4 kittens from a friend who had a "population explosion". This happened at a time when it was fashionable to have a kitten neutered at 10 weeks of age or younger. I had to be very assertive when explaining to my vet that I did not want my kittens neutered until they were sexually mature. I just didn't think that having a baby spayed or neutered was a good idea. As it turns out, Dr Wooten and I agree.

Doctor, your advice is very solid for a cat owner. In an ideal world (and one day maybe we'll get there) 6-7 months to S/N rescue cats, and TNVR (which I have done) is just not feasible. Due to overcrowding in shelters, rescues are pulling kittens and getting them S/N at 3lbs or even at 2 lbs. Also, if we are to have any hope at all to curb "community cat" (i.e. Feral) cat populations it is also necessary to S/N at very young ages. Siamese, in particular can mature quicker than other breeds or DSHs. They mature at 5 months, even at 4 months rather than the typical 6-7 months. I sincerely wish that we didn't have to put the baby cats through surgery so young, but it is the only way to try to control the situation. It is a very fortunate cat that has found a home that is able to be S/N at the 6-7 month mark. Please, everyone: change the world and SPAY and NEUTER to end this cycle of suffering.

Do you really have people saying their cat will be upset because they never had kittens? I'm sorry, that sounds like something a comedian would say! I've noticed a real change in my area since I was a kid regarding stray cats - you'd see them regularly but these days, it's very rare. As desexing cats has become more common, it's a little harder to come across a cat when you want to adopt, as I found recently through personal experience, and it's a bit more expensive, but the positive changes have, in my opinion, been worth it.

I have an unneutered female cat who doesn't go crazy when in heat. She does make her mating call or whatever. It's totally new to me that unneutered cats wanna roam away, because all of my unneutered cats I've had have never tried to jump out the window or anything.

Dr Karen Becker said that the early spaying and neutering health issues later on tend to be for dogs but for now, not so much for cats. That being said, I prefer my cats to be spayed when they are at least 6 months old or older. I don't agree with spaying cats too early.

So, best time to watch this video. We have both a male and a female, they're 5 months old and tonight they already tried to have some fun :P (we managed to avoid it). We're neutering him in 2 days, and now they're staying in separated houses. Our vet recommended us to wait as much as we could, that's why we didn't neuter him earlier, but all of this info is pretty useful, thanks! ^^

I had one of my male cats neutered when he was just a few months old - and he grew up with a small head compared to his dad - who was neutered when he was closer to a year old. So a male with a small head is a thing too.

Funny thing - adopted one cat who was already neutered but sprays in the house anyway. Adopted second cat who isn't (he's scheduled) who doesn't give two hoots and doesn't spray in the house at all. First cat is healthy (had him looked at for possible medical reasons for spraying) and I think it's just a case of him being insecure. There are other cats that roam outside and it's like when he comes in from chilling on the deck outside, he has to reaffirm that yes, this is his house. Meanwhile Cat #2 has a vibe of "no one can mess with me" and will even investigate when he hears a noise like "WHO IS IT? WHO'S AT MY HOUSE?" Cat #1 doesn't do it as much anymore, but I'm still trying to figure out ways to make him more comfortable so that he understands this is his house, none of the cats outside get to come in. (Cat #1 and #2 get along, btw.)

I know this is an older video but as a first time cat owner, it was incredibly helpful! I felt bad at first when I saw how much my 6 month old feral rescue tabby had the cone but we are 10 days post surgery and while I'm leaving the cone on for four more days because he still seems to want to lick, he is doing great! Is it okay at 14 days to do a once in a lifetime post surgery bath? I don't plan to bathe my cats on the regular but he's a long hair and while I've been using huggies wipes to just clean the upper back of his hind legs, he's still got some yucky around his incision. I've been a dog person my entire life but I can say that I am so content with venturing into the kitty cat world. I love both of my orange tabby rescues so much! ❤

Something I learned from my first boy cat is that there's a type of laser neutering and it significantly cuts down on the recovery time. I tried really hard to find a doctor that implemented that technique but there wasn't any available, so I went with the traditional surgery. It would've been great to have him in his cone for a few less days because I could tell by his 6th day that he was really uncomfortable. he's a tuff boi though!
@pinacoloda2262 жыл бұрын
My Male cat was neutered about a month ago at the humane society,he had no cone! And he was back to his normal self within a couple of days! Anyhow the laser surgery sounds kinda "iffy",like it may or may not take,besides most likely being more expensive!

We have a lot of feral cats in our area. Thankfully, our city supports TNR (trap, neuter, return/release). I have a saying, "If you have the ⚽️⚽️ to come into our yard, you're going to get them cut off". Since I refuse to "feed to breed", we have all of the ferals in our area desexed (spayed/neutered) whenever we can catch them, some even as young as 3 months old. Since they are ferals, cones aren't an option, so they go into the backyard "hotel" (a rabbit hutch with wire enclosure) or a wire dog kennel with a litter box for at least a day or two post-op. So far, none have had complications, no matter how old/ young they were.

I have 2 male cats and are now at the end of 8th month. I noticed that they want to be more outside. I guess it’s more stimulating compared to Indoors… I’ll have to neuter them now because i guess that they will suffer psychologically and that’s not what i want for then so yes. Its a hard moment because I don’t like surgery at all ! Thank you for putting out some advise on this topic!

I'm living in Oregon, and all the low income spay/neuter clinics wait list is full. In Oregan, they don't have the convenience of Haven Humane reasonably priced spay/neuter clinics. The reg. Veterinarian wants $300-$400 to neuter my male kitten. After exhausting all resources, even 211 and nobody has openings. What do I do now? Help, please. Thank you

If you listen to people long enough you can clearly hear their biases. 17:27 “We dont want to be neutering kittens before they’re done growing so wait until 6-7 months to spay or neuter your cat.” Do you mean growing or sexual maturity? Two different things. 6-9 months for sexual maturity. And longer for full physical development (depending on breed).

Kinda wish I’d seen this video prior to last week. We had our 9 month old male pedigree Maine Coon Flame, neutered. I know he’s not done growing (he’s been putting on 2lbs a month since we got him). Our vet had wanted us to neuter him sooner but our breeder suggested 8-9 months is fine as MCs mature more slowly. I also didn’t know there were different types of neutering. He’s basically a giant 15.5 lb kitten still.

Really appreciate the detailed explanations--hate when KZbin forces professionals to treat their audience like small children, LOL. I've gotten my first strictly indoor cat, or rather...he got me. Rescued him from neighbor's drain pipe as a kitten. He's grown explosively--I got a glimpse of the other kittens from that litter as well as the mama cat, and he's much bigger, but he's also getting fed very well. Okay--his testicles are dropping, and the aggression level is rising. I estimate his age at about 3-4 months. He's not mean, but he's quite feisty and get's carried away wrestling with my Chihuahua, my ankle...my fingers...and my...well, you get my drift I'm sure. I've had male horses and dogs, so this feisty behavior seems very similar to puppy/colt behavior. LOL, I'm not sure I'll make it until he's six months old. Regardless....thank you very much the plain talk!

@jodi28672 жыл бұрын
Please listen to me, do not neuter the boys, it is completely unnecessary. It does not help in anything. Any deadly disease they still can catch, you are just cutting out a major part of their lives. Vets recommend it only for their profit. Females should be neutered but there is no need to do this to males. It is not the same. And if they are they know that they are neutered, they see and know if their testicles are removed, it is an agony for them. Especially if they are outdoor cats in impacts them horribly. How would you feel if someone bigger than you kidnapped you and chopped off your if you had?

While spending time in Florida this past winter, ('24) a very young (under a year old) pregnant cat found me. I took her into our trailer on Jan 20th and she delivered on the 21st. 5 babies. Her 2nd litter, the 1st all died because she didn't know what to do, a kitten herself and no one helped her, sadly. I thought the mom wouldn't go into heat for a couple more weeks, but she did when the babies were just 6 weeks old. Had her spayed when they were 8 weeks and partially weaned. Brought them home to Canada and they are now 14 weeks old. They will all be going to their homes by the end of May. Keeping the mom cat. Interested in knowing the exact info you are giving here. Thankyou!
