Great video Matt yeah I’m the grandpa 62 years young have the thatcher, aerator, mowers, hedger, chipper and shredder, small blower, trailer and all the small tools needed for lawn care!!! Not to say the knowledge to put in irrigation!! I’ve been employed for 37 years and retired from one company and possibly having to work part time with the company so this will give me the time to start the business I had before!! Long story!! Good vid.👍A bit more advice to all. I've worked outdoors all my life in one capacity or another. One thing, aside from the actual lawn maintenance, tree work and shrub pruning in all kinds of weather, you must know how to repair outdoor power equipment. It's a must. If you don't know how to work on machines, LEARN. A little at a time, basic maintenance at first, but you should get deeper into actual mechanical repairs. Machines break, and usually at the worst possible time. And repairs can be EXPENSIVE. Don't push your equipment too hard. That causes breakage and can put you in a dangerous position where you could be hurt, BADLY. Do regular maintenance. If you take care of your machines, they will take care of you. Also, always have a back-up machine if each type on your truck or trailer in case your regular stuff breaks down. It can be old and not pretty, but if it works, use it til your regular, daily machine is running again. Learn to PROPERLY sharpen mower blades or you will ruin them. You will shorten the life of the blades if not sharpened properly. Also, carry tools, shear key stock, spark plugs, belts, trimmer line, fuel,, shovels, rakes etc. Be prepared for any conceivable eventuality. And keep your shop NEAT. A cluttered shop can be hazardous!! Especially storing gasoline. Fumes you can't see lie low to the ground. One spark and BOOM!! Keep gassy rags outside or in a metal, sealed container. When using machines always think SAFETY FIRST!!! I've seen a couple of nasty mistakes where the results were no pretty. Anyway, if you get into this biz, you will know after the first season if it's for you and would want to continue. If you don't, you have a business you can sell - equipment and accounts have a value. Good luck, all.

In Texas you don’t need to worry about your patrimony if you are not LLC BECAUSE is protected by the state so sole proprietor is good and just make sure to have business insurance...

That's awesome Tony! Congratulations! I started just going door to door and knocking. I don't nessessarily recommend that though. It's free other than the time it takes. But, people here don't particularly enjoy door to door sales. I would do for hangers in a really tight area. Most cost effective and it focuses your service area. It does take lots of time though

@@johnny99211 hi ro Lando! That seems like a cut and dry kind of question but the answer is much more complicated. I'm fixing to do a Q and A type video tomorrow hopefully. I can answer it with more detail on that. But for now, you have to figure out what "regular" means. That's a very unclear description. If I were you for now, I would do a bid based off how long you think it will take you to do the job in minutes. The industry standard for mowing seems to be a buck a minute. I hope that helps for now and I look forward to doing the video!

Since you do your own maintenance, how do you get that as a right off? Does your accountant want a recipe for each maintenance, blade sharpening, oil change etc. Or you can bunch it all together and just give them one amount for the season?

Great question! Recipes are important for sure. Doing things yourself saves labor cost but there are part procurement costs. The cost of the parts and the cost for going to get the parts. The parts themselves require reciepts and are categorized as "equipment maintenance". But the mileage is claimed separately on a mileage report I give to my accountant.

The work is very rewarding, you can make a good living and there is a certain degree of peace you get from this line of work. However, it's very hard work.. This goes without saying.. If you work ethic isn't stellar, then this line of work isn't for you..

As an accountant, I don't think you should be a LLC. You could mess up a lawn and the liability is very little. Like you said the taxes are easier. LLC require accountants that are pretty pointless for a small business like yours. In your experience how many times have you damaged property and the customer went after you legally? Year one, $200 troy bilt rider, pushed up ramps into an s10 pickup with a push mower in front and an old ryobi trimmer. Customers came slow at first, I'd work an hour for $35-$40. Now, I have a ztr, trailer, a pair of stihl fourmix trimmers and can do $50-$60 an hour. I have no crew, just me. Sole proprietor. Insured. Part time hours, grossing $3000-$3500 per month.

I live wherever I park my truck. OKC quit a bet and Norman ok. 56 years old Social security Disability . I am trying the window cleaning business out. But lawns have been a passion most all my life. Just something about cutting grass always was satisfying to me... I got a tip to a huge lot of grass to be cut up by chickasha Oklahoma. Commercial land... Not brush hog neither... But I have been looking around to rent the equipment needed, but I don't even know how to bid something on that scale... Park's is what I was told... This was my 7th season. It was a very interesting one this year. I hired 2 employees and allowed them to do most of the work. Drought led to less lawns mowed, employees are really expensive to hire, and my workers were only part time so they got maxed out on hours due to having other jobs. I didn't make much money in comparison to years past. I don't have final numbers this year yet but I am around 5k take home. Years past doing it all myself was much more profitable at 24k after taxes part time. This year I used Markate as my customer management system with square for credit card processing. I think I will switch to jobber next year.

On the oil change aspect.... I'm waaay late to the game on this video... I'm a Marine Technician by trade.... I have a tool that will change your life. I moved from Florida to Tennessee... The boat game here is not like Florida. I ended up in a spot building high pressure pipe cleaning systems for the plumbing industry... I have an oil extractor. It's a common piece of kit for a mobile marine technician... I can pull oil out of 2 big block "Go Fast" boats in a single service.... The engines I work with now are tiny in comparison..... HOWEVER!!!!. My oil extractor from PANTHER has come in very handy.... I eliminated tipping engines and jetting carts to drain oil.... It's a suction driven pump with a straw... Can be hooked to an air hose.... Cold ❄️ oil, doesn't pull very well

My boys are 14 and 12 and they have a long business and they do pretty good with just five push mowers one weed eater One blower and would want to get them a new edger attachment. That is so cool! So many great businesses started that way. The number of lawns depends on size, complexity, and a person's inclination and availability. But, generally speaking, if he is trying to balance school and mowing lawns, I would try to stay at 1-2 small lawns on school days and 6-10 on one weekend day (I personally don't work Saturdays).

I don't have many issues with that. Most of my customers are very good about cleaning up. I dontworky much about to occasional yard bomb, but if there was a problem lawn, then I would ask them to clean up or I would charge to clean-up. The charge would be relative to time I spend cleaning up

Good stuff man ! I’m starting my own lawn care business in the spring I already own everything but I do want a stander zero turn but looking at some used ones . I could just say screw it and wait. But I figured I’ll keep the John deer for back up just in case the stander goes down. But I’ll still always have my Walk behind cubcadet bagger she’s been a great little mower and strong running. .. I have two weed wackers and one blower. Gonna use what I have for the first year see how things go 🤞🏽🤞🏽 I feel good about it and I’m a hard worker so I should be okay lol I have a few friends on standby that will help me if I get in a jam lol wish me luck lol.

Most people can own their own business, any sort. There are many misconceptions about being in business. No boss, work when you want, make tons of money!! First of all, every one of your customers IS a boss. Lawn mowing, nature is the boss. I can do whatever I want...after all 56 of my lawn customer’s lawns look great. Tons of cash....I’m a one man operator/owner and I’m limited by how much I can get done and how much the standard rates are for my work. I have been running a property management LLC for 28 years. I don’t have sick days, I,ve worked every holiday almost every year, no benefits unless I buy them, very few vacations. If I’m injured...so what, no work no money, no work no customers, they want service not excuses. Unless you are dedicated, self motivated, and willing to do whatever has to get done every day, let someone else take the responsibility and just show up to their job. Anyone can do this, but many fail along the way. To me this lifestyle is like being a farmer, the work is endless, the days long, the harvest can be great but there is a high cost.

I have chosen to be an owner/ operator, with no employees or partners that accounts pretty much for the negative aspects that I have experienced through the years, EVERYTHING needs to be done by myself and done when it has to get done….very little wiggle room. Of course the first 15 years of my work as a carpenter, I was an employee and for many of my years that my business painted full exteriors and commercial projects I teamed up with one or two other painters, those situations also had negative aspects. As an older person these days I find life a balance of both positive and negative features, a rolling trade off of outcomes. Over the last 5 years I have found the simple but at times demanding chore of mowing people’s grass to be a good fit for this tough old buzzard. I am not opposed to reinventing myself/ business…..again, but if this is the best it gets, I’m totally cool with that. As an artist/wood carver during my off season I can see my work increasing in value, my goal is to taper off lawns and make more saw dust! It’s all good.

It sounds like you have a great path ahead. Mike Andes is focused on the other path of growing a multi million dollar business but he has some really interesting insight on have employees that can take the burdens off your shoulders. It may just be interesting video for you though. Making saw dust does sound like a really nice way!

That a great question! The answer is different for different people. Market value for any given job is a factor. Also, how much do you want to make per manhour? You can charge less and likely win more jobs. But you will be stuck working too hard for too little (I am very experienced in that). Or you could could be loseing most bids because your too high. I am currently about 45.00 per hour and I'm too low. I can't scale my business up and still make the money I need. That's the focus I would have:. How long will it take to do a job and how much do you need to charge to make your money but also grow the business.

Great question! One I get a lot. First I would say I do not recommend sole proprietor in lieu of a llc. However, sole proprietorship is not necessarily wrong depending on the situation. I chose sole proprietor because I am a solo operation without employees, I believe I can manage risk, and there was no significant tax advantage to being an llc. Sole proprietor is not right for everyone but LLC is going to be right for most people. If you want to be better safe than sorry then LLC is a better choice by far

Bermuda is the most common turf we have here in OKC. It really takes of in the 90 degree area. Close to 100 and without sufficient water, it will start to slow down again
