From $0 to $8,000 per month in the Lawn Care Business at 19 (Pt. 1)

Lawn care business success isn’t guaranteed. Most landscaping businesses make $50,000 or less in their first year and many of them fail before they finish a second.

I started my business late season of 2020. my first customer I had been driving around the neighborhood dropping business cards, he was outside STRUGGLING.STRUGGLING with his push mower not starting, my wife was in the truck with me and pushed me to ask him since i was too chicken to do so and I Offered him a 25 dollar cut small lawn. it took me 1 hour to do I was so nervous, it takes me 10 minutes tops to do now lol. finished my season with around 35 customers 90% bi weekly 10% weekly. starting this season back up with around 40 if they all sign back up. currently 16 have re-applied for services.

I bought a $20 mower that needed a new carb ($5). A used ryobi string trimmer, blower with two gas cans for $70. At home depot I bought a rake, trash can, pruning scissors, a hoe, shovel, new trimmer string for close to $70. Business cards $25. There are deals out there to get you started. You just have to keep looking

My first customer was a personal friend. It was lawn service and he never asked for a deal. Some might say its your friend so it doesn't count. So my first real customer was Bob from Wabash.. This spring I’ll be starting my 17th year mowing and landscaping. I started when I was 25 with a $5,500 loan from my aunt to buy my first zero turn. I literally had to use $20 of the $5,500 to put in gas in my truck to go pick of the mower from the guy. Luckily, he did take $5,480 for the mower. While getting the business going, I also worked full time as a cop. I started LE at 21 years old in NC. I quickly found out that actually working and getting dirty was and always has been my passion. I started out with just 4 or 5 yards. Being young and always being a go getter, it quickly grew into 25, 40, 60, 75 and up to 90 residential and commercial yards I and two employees were taking care of. Fast forward 10 years, 2015, I gave up law enforcement and went full time mowing. This was HUGE decision to make. To give up insurance, a steady measly check, retirement, etc was very scary! I’m not a millionaire, but I did invest in rental property with some off my earnings. Tips starting out: 1) Don’t buy junk. Spend the extra $3000 (finance interest free) for that commercial zero turn. I run Stihl, but use good equipment. 2) Keep your earnings private. When you start out poor, but you’re passionate, determined and a worker, you’re going to to make money, possibly a lot of money. Those best friends, close cousins and co-workers will start to notice your earning way before you do. They don’t see the work you’ve done, only that you now have more than they do. Stay humble. 3) If you stay at it and actually become a “business”, you’ll eventually become more of a boss/manager, than the worker that got you where you are. I still have a hard time doing this. I to this day, tell my guys I’m not their boss. I’m a worker just like them. That’s a hard transition, for me anyway. 4) Do excellent work! If you do, the money and time you put into advertisement in the beginning, you never have to do again. Only advertising I do anymore is company shirts to work in. 5) The people who work for you, represent you and your company. They don’t get the customer complaints and text, you do. You are like a sheriff. If New Guy Johnny runs over Sue’s plant, it’s on you, not New Guy Johnny. Just one employee can ruin your whole business and all the time it took to get to where you are. 6) Work hard! Landscaping and mowing is not easy. If you can’t handle humid 95 degree days, lawn care is not meant for you. 7) Small tip on hiring. When talking to a new guy/girl to hire, look at their complexion. If they are white and don’t have a bit of a tan, no good. If they are black and aren’t dark skin black, no good. Hispanic, same thing.

Great video, and this guy has a fantastic attitude. Proof that you don't need a college degree or a stack of cash to make a great living. My only concern for this guy is he's already walking like he's in his 60's... that work takes its toll. I reckon he could drop that impressive profit margin a touch and get an employee. He's on track to be a debt free millionaire by the time his highschool buddies have graduated from college with $200k debt and a job market in freefall. He's a rockstar.

Really what this boils down to, is he understands a few things. First, Russell understands that there’s no “can’t” do the job. Secondly, he knows that he can sell the job without the equipment, brilliant method for starters who are committed. Thirdly, he mentioned he worked the industry prior to starting his own, this is key for first time starters, get a job in lawn care and landscaping before you start a business, you need to learn the ropes first otherwise you’ll run into problems and not know what to do.

I see these vids all the time, there is even a bigger secret that us in the industry have epically the one like myself, the biggest secret to being successful is we don't talk about how much money we make, when doing so it opens up huge doors on many unwanted things. If you know ur makin money and building your company you are the only one who need to know that information. In my case when people see the huge variety of equipment speaks volumes, I understand your point of view that you want to share this info and wealth but on the same note it opens more unwanted doors than it helps you in the long range outlook of your small business.

I’m from the small business, no employees one man show property management camp. Many new into business fail by over investing before the customers base has been established. At the end of the week a business is working only if the profit margin is in the black, overhead, employees, loans, office costs etc. I have chosen to stay a one man business for 30 years now and my business has been very strong, I’ve done well and have enjoyed the lower stress associated with “ small boat, small problems, big boat, big problems “. You get to pick how you want build your business but reinvestment is critical, and having customers is also also critical. For me I have not had to earn $100k per year to have zero debt, own two properties free and clear and pile money away.....you just need discipline and work smart. Great video!!

You don’t need money to start, you should start with digging or some labour that just needs a shovel. Once you got the money from that buy a lawnmower and then you can start from there.

My story is I start this bussiness cause nobody hired me. Lol. Pushing a lawn mower in front of a church is the way I got my first customer. I was mowing the church's yard for free. After the first customer I got 10. And then I start cleaning flower beds and they got me more customers. Second season I doubled my income and like him. Keep investing and working baby!

Start now doing fall cleanups and pruning. Start doing snow removal in the winter if you can. Create all your systems and marketing in the winter so you can really get going when the spring rush starts

We agree with Russell! Door-to-door advertising is always such a great way to get yourself out there, and it's cheap as well! Promotions and referrals are also something you can keep in mind :) Good luck to you!

Alright Russell. How much can you make with one leg? Because if you keep using chainsaws without chaps and proper PPE your going to lose one. It's always the guy that says "I know what I'm doing" but can't point to the 'kick back zone' of a chainsaw that ends up in the ER with a laceration to the femoral artery. Also, learn proper tree felling techniques. You are going to find out the wrong way why the way you are notching trees is VERY dangerous.
