I got a texture release in 2019. While it looked great, I have thin & fine 4c hair, and it was severely heat damaged by the number of passes (around 5) done by the stylist and had to restart my hair journey. I’m interested in doing it again because I think the treatment in itself is beneficial based on what you’ve stated in the video, but I think it definitely is dependent on the stylist being experienced with the treatment and knowing how to adjust based on the client’s hair type

I got a texture release 9 months ago and while my texture has slowly returned over time it's still not the same. Some areas are even permanently straight. I suspect this is heat damage from too many passes with the flat iron. Can this treatment be done with only one pass?

For anyone who may be confused about the technical difference between the Avlon Texture Release and a Relaxer - a relaxer is a product whose active ingredient is a metal hydroxide. The high pH of the hydroxide opens up the cuticle and permanently breaks down and rearranges the sulfur bonds within that make your hair curly. This is not reversible. If you break down most or all of those bonds the hair will be almost straight. If you only break down some of the bonds by processing the hair for less time (or with a weaker formulation), this is known as texturising the hair - this leaves the original curl pattern only slightly altered. The Avlon Texture Release’s straightening effect doesn’t come from the permanent break down of the bonds - the straightening effect comes from the formation of film-like materials within and also on the outer layer of the hair, which is generated by the high heat applied to the product (the active ingredient involved is traditionally formaldehyde, but modern formulations are, on paper, formaldehyde-free). These materials help to keep the hair straight - imagine fully stretching a spring and then encasing it in cement while it’s still stretched - that’s how the active ingredient in the ATR works. Over time, this coating is degraded and the curls can begin to return to their natural shape again. In cases where people’s hair becomes permanently altered after getting the ATR, I suspect that this is more so heat damage, as keratin treatments require a lot of heat to fully process (heat simultaneously smoothes the hair into position and activates the coating that will hold it into place). The scale of heat damage that someone may experience from frequent high heat usage will vary depending on the health and integrity of the hair being subjected to it. If you get an ATR with hair that is already compromised, you have a higher chance of experiencing damage. Additionally, how frequently you wash your hair will greatly impact how long your curls stay stretched. If you wash your hair once a month verses once a week, then your curls will take a longer time to revert, because the coating is being broken down slower. If you’re a few months out since your last texture release and worried that your hair isn’t reverting as it should be, take a break from direct high heat for a few weeks (flat irons, curlers, round brush dryers), do a clarifying shampoo every 1-2 weeks for a month or two, along with a deep conditioning treatment each time. This will remove any remaining coating that might still be keeping your curls stretched. *Edit:* correction made regarding my explanation of the texture release - texture release-like products *do* go into the hair strand, whereas before I said that they only work on the outer layer. Still, the bonds are not permanently broken down during that process the way a relaxer would.

I really appreciate how you talk about both ATR and keratin treatments here. I've only recently learned that the at-home keratin treatment I use is actually using the same main ingredient as ATR uses. So now I'm thinking these words don't always mean something different. 'Keratin' seems to be used for both formaldehyde based and non-form. based products for one thing. Agreed 100% on your explanation of how both work, coating, not penetrating and changing chemical construction of strands! Also yes, I can tell the little 'damage' I did was from applying to many passes with the hot iron in my 4A region, which only my 4C/4B regions could really handle. Same product everywhere, just needed to vary application of heat based on the section of my head. It's not significant, but I can definitely see how people using higher heat and more passes than I did could really give themselves heat damage, not keratin/ATR damage.

And I agree - despite all the different names, the active ingredients are generally the same (and honestly, there’s still some clarity needed on how ‘formaldehyde-free’ these actives are, since I think they still technically work by releasing formaldehyde on some level, but how significant it is health-wise still remains unknown - if there is a risk, then sadly it’s more so to the stylists who may have to do them on a daily basis, and not so much the client who’s only exposed 3-4 times per year). In terms of how the different products claim to work, I really think the main difference is in the product’s instructions - a product that promises greater long-term curl retention may recommend only 5-7 passes per section at 190 C/375 F on a coily hair type, but then a product that promises ultimate sleekness may recommend as high as 10+ passes at 230 C/440 F! And I can’t imagine curls surviving that process very well. Research into how keratin treatments actually work and how they affect the hair is still ongoing, so we may learn a lot more on what may cause damage during this process. I actually edited my original comment since I learned recently that keratin treatments do work within the hair and not just outside (but still don’t permanently change the structure - just adds a material within that helps keep the hair straight along with the coating on the outside).

You are exactly correct. I get this same system on my "4c", fairy knot prone hair for about a year (3xs) and I've experienced better length and moisture retention, and ease of at home maintenance. My hair reverts when wet, so I can toggle styles. I love it!

@@voguehaven5154 Yep. After about 2-3 months of maintenance (shampooing, etc.) my coils start tightening right on up as before. The coils are much more loose in the beginning, but I promise you: the more water over time, the more reversion over time. I'm at the point where I'm going to train my hair. I THOUGHT I wanted to relax it, but a 3 month reup on this system and a stylist-performed flat iron has given me what I wanted without those chemicals.

@@voguehaven5154 my hair was 4b/4c and now it’s 4b. The heat setting matters if you want your curl pattern the same. Do 410f max w/ 3 passes. I did 395F. The 450F w/ 7passes is too high for most ppls hair in my opinion

I would love to get a texture release, however I don’t trust hair stylists here in the US. The ones that I have found here that offer the services don’t seem to have a good understanding as to what it actually is and does to Afro hair. I have done extensive research on the texture release system by watching several UK stylists channels (including yours) and read information on the Avlon website. The stylists here thinks it either a keratin treatment or a texturizer. So I guess I will never be able to have it done unless I come to London. I love your channel

We have this for years in Brazil, it’s kind of a keratin treatment but the base is with aminoacids,much safer then the keratin one once this uses formaldehyde. But you have to take good care of the hair woth hydration treatments. Many people think because it looks shiny it doesn’t need and after many times doing it the hair can have breakage. But really professional application and results ❤

I’d have to disagree. If it were so easy to have manageable hair, women wouldn’t be ripping out their edges with with extensions and wigs or damaging their curl patterns with heat. Protective styles serve 2 purposes: 1. to protect the hair from elements and over manipulation and 2. to make the hair manageable while not manipulating. These are things I’ve never had to consider while relaxed and my hair thrived. Natural hair is high maintenance, plain and simple. Some women choose to go that route and it’s fine but others choose not to and that’s also fine.

Problem is some ladies are striving for looser curls and "definition" when that's not the hair type a lot of us have. I’ve had it applied by a master hairdresser and Avlon Texture Release certified trainer for the past 4 years. My hair is 3c, porous, and very fine, and I live in a hot and humid climate. Since my hair is so fine, it takes a very long time before it wears off. Heat activates it. My hair will have new growth before it wears off. I once went 8 months between applications. By then, all of the Texture Release had worn off my hair. Bottom line is It’s not a relaxer and results will vary based on your hair type, texture, porosity, and how often you apply heat.

I’ve used it once this year and loved it. I’ll probably use it again in the winter time when I want to silk press my hair. I have 4ab high porosity hair. I probably won’t use it but once or twice a year. It’s been so helpful especially with detangling my hair and length retention. It really depends on the individual’s hair.

Way back in the day... There was Vigorol!! Anybody remember that... I wish it were still around... You washed your hair with it.. now.. It smelled like sulfur 8 on steroids for a few days... I do love the idea of this. Many tighter coiled hair struggle in retaining length because moisture doesn’t get all the way down to the ends. This loosens but still keeps texture. And if they wanted to keep their hair in this state they could get max 3 times a year vs a relaxer that completely strips the hair of all texture and you have to do it every time you get new growth or risk breakage. Def a good option

I have 4ab fine, high density, coloured hair and had mine in April. It has helped me retain length because I get about 80% fewer fairy knots. My curl pattern has definitely loosened but not enough to worry about. I see it as a type of keratin treatment. I'll definitely keep doing 1 or 2 a year as this plus Olaplex has been helpful for my growth.

It's a conditioning treatment that coats the hair. I used the Prismax brand. you really don't have to be careful with applying it and straightening the hair sets it in place. It was advised to rinse a percentage out but I left 100% in after learning how much was needed at the beginning of the application. My hair would dry quicker, but it didn't fight much against humidity but I still love the product. 100% recommend.

I had just ONE TEXTURE release last September and i regret it. My hair looks damaged i think she straighterned it too much im just going to keep trimming and treating it until i get my hair back because i aint big chopping, i do need to big chop anyway because its nore milder than relaxer and that line of demarcation ( because i hate it) is actually not too bad 😂compared to how a relaxer would be i also got a very mild texture release they told me how straight i want my hair. My hair has not gone back natural either its take time so think about it before you do it

This is a fantastic video and I agree with everything in it. I’ve been getting texture releases for 18months now and I love it. Unfortunately I went to a very reputable salon who heat damaged my hair this time last year so I am in the process of cutting the ends slowly with my new hairdresser. Brazilian have the same products for about 10-15 years now. But theirs can be layered and so either one renews it before the first one is completely out of the hair and it becomes more straight or wait the 3-4 month and do it again on virgin hair

@@JenniferCynthiaHair I am not sure that we are talking about the same products! They have straightener like Brazilian Keratin straightening, then they have passo a passo, which will loosen definitely the curl pattern only if used too often and will even straighten it over the span of a year or so, and then there is what they call Keratin treatment which is different from what American call Keratin treatment and it is exactly the same steps. A shampoo to have the hair squiky clean, then a preparation that must go under the dryer, a rince that doesn't take all of the product away but about 80%, and then it has to be ironed with or without blow dry, depending on the desired effect. Heat reactivates it and for those who want it curly they just do not apply heat after it again. The hair must not be washed for about two days and only with salt free and sulfate free shampoo and the effects will last 2 or 3 months ☺️

Hey, thanks for your comment. There’s a lot of things that could be contributing to breakage that may not necessarily be related to having the texture release. It’s best to talk about it with the stylist that did the treatment for you.

You still must deep condition your hair. I do aphogee 2 step every month after treatment. It doesn’t protein overload and my hair is so much stronger and thicker.

I believe a texture release is way worse. I got one done for my hair a few months back. I was okay with the results, I had to do mine a couple times to get something somewhat satisfactory. Anyhow, so I wanted to do something else different with my hair after about 2-3 months. I did a relaxer and I’m talking super strength and it felt like nothing happened to my hair. I’ve done relaxers, wave nouveau and worn my hair just straight ol natural kinky curls and have had excellent results and hair growth. I will never go back to a texture release, something’s way off about that process and what it really does to your hair.

A texturizer permanently loosens the curl pattern, but the Texture Release only changes the curl pattern for a few months (permanent changes that people report from the process are likely caused by heat damage, not any chemical in the Texture Release system).

Jennifer explained the best candidates for this type of system and I whole heartedly understand the struggles. When you’re actively trying to obtain more length or achieve certain styles there are conditions of natural hair that hinder such things. So a texture release method may help or assist towards those goals. It’s not for all women with natural kinky hair but yes it can make managing the hair easier. No one is forcing women to get to utilize this method.
