@@nastynas7 Here we go with the Jordan whine again. Let's be straight here, few athletes play at an elite level forever. Jordan included. The core of the Pistons were four years older than Jordan, so, yes, age did become a part of it. But also consider the NBA's choice to change what and how fouls were called. Contact fouls that the Pistons had used effectively and resulted in a simple one and one at the line became three to make two flagrant fouls. How refs defined the number of steps to the basket before a travel also changed to allow a longer run in to the basket. Contact at the three point line became a more likely foul call. So for the most part, the defensive moves that distinguished the Pistons became much more severe foul calls and limited this style of play. Jordan's style of play could really take advantage of this, from him being free to move without the ball on the perimeter, to his drives to the basket that previously would have been called as traveling or offensive charges. Jordan was great player (not as great as he things he was), but the NBA is a marketing league and they were wise enough to tweak the rules to make a great player look like the all time GOAT. Trouble is, Jordan ain't the GOAT.

The Pistons were hated because fans across the nation wanted to see ballet, not basketball. The Pistons played tough physical defense in an unrelenting way. They never let up, they never took minutes off, they pressured, pressured, pressured every minute and that upset a lot of people. What they did was play exquisitely good defensive basketball. Their offense was double low post half court and it was brutal. Watching opponents chase two HOF guards Dumars and Thomas around and get picked off by Rodman, Mahorn, Edwards, Laimbeer...it was was beautiful patterned, disciplined basketball and it was PHYSICAL, not dirty. It was grlorious to watch night in, night out. Yeah, even Detroit fans acknowledge that Michael Jordan was spectacularly great. But most of us will take little Isiah Thomas first in a pick up game.

Match them up against any team you want. The thing that made them so amazing was their depth, their team and individual defense, their ability to play ANY Style of game, their amazing coaching, player leadership, Hall of Fame skills, and a number of players that could take over a game on the offensive end any any time, whether that be drives, defense, or threes. The unbelievable will of Laimbeer and Thomas that embodied the spirit of the entire team. Isiah Thomas was Detroit's Jordan. When you had to have it, give it to Isiah, unstoppable 1 on 1. You need a bunch in a hurry? Whichever of their three guards is hot at the time will drop 20 in a quarter for you. There is not a team that ever played that they could not match up with at their peak. You wanna run? OK. You wanna half court it? Even better. Either way, we are gonna take away what you do best, frustrate you, get steals, wear your ass out, gonna strangle your best player, and our guards are gonna kill you. Over 7 games, the Pistons just plain outworked and out-thought you, and had the superstars to make plays whenever they had to have them. People didn't hate them because they were physical. EVERYBODY good in the NBA was physical, borderline dirty back then. Bird whines about the Pistons being dirty when he is considered one of the dirtiest players of all time (also sour grapes, somewhat). They hated them because the Pistons suffocated them, frustrated them, made them look bad. It is called defense. If there was an all-time tournament, you could do worse than betting on them. As long as you are playing by the rules of basketball that were in effect when men played the sport, that is. They don"t beat Golden State in a 3 point contest, that is sure, but by pre-90's rules (which people played with for most of basketball history), they could not be discounted as a team to watch in an all-time tourney. I don't care what superstar you throw at them, they have an answer. What about the Super-Teams? The Big 3 Teams? The Pistons WERE a Big 3 team. Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, and Rodman are all HOF. All 3 in their prime. The supporting cast makes a huge difference for the Pistons. Their bench, their team chemistry, their defense, their toughness, their experience and their basketball IQ were legendary. They would be a tough out for ANY team. Believe it.
@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 9 ай бұрын
Chuck Daily is never given enough credit for both his over all plan for this team, his ability to get his players to own the system he designed, and his fearless trades of great players that failed to fit his vision for the Pistons. To recognize that Rodman deserved a place on the floor for his defense and rebounding alone is an amazing decision especially when you had one of the best offensive men you could play instead in Dantley. The team went nine deep. No one had to be the super star night after night like you witnessed with the other three big contenders of Celtics, Bulls and Lakers. If those team's star had an off night it most likely meant a lose. Not with the Pistons. The game might not look the same, but they were still capable of winning because they were so deep and talented.

Bad Boy Pistons were like a classic 80s villain. Modern villains are all sympathetic, complex, and relatable, if still morally wrong characters. Old school villains were bad guys who wanted to win or take over the world, and didn't give a shit what people thought of them. That's what the Bad Boys were, the villains of the NBA who just wanted to win, didn't give a shit what anyone thought of them, and were willing to do anything to accomplish that. If that meant Bill Laimbeer mauling players attacking the rim while Thomas was jumping on their back, then so be it, as long it worked.

Radman had to go. Vinnie Johnson Screwed Dennis’s wife behind his back. The time that Dennis fell asleep in his car with the rifle in the Palace parking lot they didn’t know whether he was going to use it on himself or on Vinnie. Unfortunately the worm head to go what is the microwave Would have been gone.

Andy, there were Pistons fans outside of Detroit during the Bad Boys era, Windsor, Ontario, Canada just across the Detroit border and I'm happy and proud to say this is the Pistons I grew up passionately cheering for and boyhood idols. Us neighbors up in Canada living close to the Detroit border back in that timeline, way before the Raptors and Basketball fans from Windsor, Ontario anytime wanted to go see a live NBA game it was either Pistons or nothing.

The Pistons really don't get the credit they deserve. They were the first team since the advent of the 24 sec clock to make defense their absolute focus and make it work. The nucleus of Thomas, Dumars, Rodman and Lambeer rewrote standard gameplay in ways that are still embraced today. For the record, I think, as well, that Lambeer belongs in the hall. He was one of the smartest players in the league; can't really think of another NBA player who affected games like he did with less athletic talent. I enjoyed watching them for their team first mentality and their bruising defense more than any single scorer in history. A truly unique and memorable team.

@Noyce Gaming Isiah talked about what gives that competitive edge to athletes of the same talent level. They constantly remained vigilant of the ultimate goal in those 5 seasons , the chip. And that's why the players played incredibly despite the flack. Mental toughness was the key and as Isiah put it in 2014, except lebron and kawhi, none have it now apparently. Love to watch isiah explain on nba open court

Not everyone was rooting against them, I for one love this team, love this core of 3 guard offence Dumars, Isaiah and microwave Vinnie .Rodman, Spider Sally, Mahorn, Laimbeer were tough as nails and if other teams don't want that physicality they bring they are free to choose other less contact sport . This game seperates the men from the boys , and if Pistons were really going beyond the contacts allowed in the NBA they might as well fouled out every single night, they are just so smart in walking the gray area of fouling and defending that is why their style was allowed. However is was also that physical brand if play that take a huge toll on their bodies and the time of his Airness has finally arrived that ended their reign . Can you imagine a team that would beat Larry and Michael (Eastern Conference Finals ), and Magic (NBA Finals) ? Only Bad Boys Pistons done that.
