Impeccable approach, humanizing this team. Their achievements have been contested and belittled more than any team I can think of (or at least prior to 2017). People look at teams like the 2014 Spurs and talk about how it's the most "beautiful" basketball they've ever seen. While I largely share that sentiment, here is a team with the same amount of depth, who played equally exhilarating, cohesive and selfless. The difference of course, being that with the Bad Boys' beauty comes a dash of their brand of ugliness that makes them so singular and compelling.

Pistons rolled everyone from the halfway point of the season forward, 37-6 to close out the regular season, then 11-2 in the east playoffs. The only playoff losses and their single home loss for the entirety of the back half of the season were at the hands of Jordan, who the Lakers didn't have the pleasure of facing in their 11-0 run through the West. Don't get me wrong, a healthy Magic at the conclusion of an MVP season is a huge change for the Lakers, but Detroit was on fire, and nigh-unbeatable at home. I really like their chances with home court advantage. I want to thank you for this. Your video was great but I must add some history that would explain why the 1989 Pistons is one of the greatest teams. 1986, Isiah Thomas wanted out of Detroit. I remember his famous quote, "as long as we get average players, we will be an average team." Then came the 1986 draft and everything changed when the Pistons got Rodman and Salley. Bums like Kent Benson, Earl Cureton and Tripucka were gone and the Pistons got Adrian Dantley, Mahorn lost some weight and got serious and the 1987 Pistons started to believe. I can go on but this was the foundation that the 1989 team was built on.

Without the sprained ankle, the Pistons would have been 3 time, back-to-back-to-back champs. They'd be right in the discussion with the Celtics, Lakers & Bulls. I personally already think they deserve to be in that conversation. They were a squad.

The 04 Pistons were incredibly deep, balanced, smart, and cohesive as well. I think the Bad boys were more talented overall but they never faced a defense like the 04 Pistons either
@envyops3 жыл бұрын
That 04 team was different. They didn't start the playoffs looking like champions, but they came out the ECF cooked to perfection. The Bad Boys had to build and fight for years. Bad Boys win off character from climbing a tougher mountain.

Another fantastic Making The Case. While I was watching this I started to remember what a strong spirit of TEAM success they had. I hated them, but that 89 team was a once-in-a-lifetime. Thanks so much for all the work you obviously put into these presentations.

My favorite team ever. Toughness, dedication, hustle, teamwork, talent. I fell in love with them, and no team made me feel the same ever since. When the 2004 Pistons came, they reawakened those feelings in me, and I was grateful for that, but it wasn't quite the same. I'm not from Detroit - I live on the other side of the world - but this is how basketball should be played.

The spanking of LA by that cast of nobodies with a defensive, Blue Collar game certainly was satisfying, wasn't it? Great moment in sport.

Clayton Crowley, I'm a diehard Piston Fan. I've never heard anyone speak about the Piston with such Praise and so correctly. This is now my best video of all time. Before I watch it again, I must say, I Love You Man. And thank you Brother. Stay safe.

Larry Bird would never be just another good guy. That Brother's nose was a scope, he took aim and shot his target dead center. Yes, I'm a diehard Larry Bird Fan as well. When you're Great you're Great. The Bird is Great. When you hoped Bird would miss, you were wasting your time. Bill Laimbeer's intelligent brand of bad boy was #1. They Loved hating him. I just Loved the Brother. His bow & wink at the camera was pure joy 2me. No one ever mentions Jordan speaking bad about the city of Detroit. That was Low. R.I.P Commander Chuck Daly. Stay safe everyone.

Great video Clayton. Thanks. Great point about Zeke's sacrifices. He could have run up his stats as Stockton did, but he sacrificed his individual accomplishments to prepare his teammates for the playoffs. He was a great leader I'm surprised he didn't do a better job as a coach and executive I think he'd have done a better job coaching in college.
@envyops3 жыл бұрын
Zeke had a bright spot as a coach: He built that Pacers team that Carlisle took to the ECF against the 04 Pistons. I always wondered how well he would have done coaching them that year. But Bird fired him immediately in 03.

And as the gm for the Knicks, no one could win in that circus of a sports franchise. Yankees, despite all their money, can't even win a world serie in over 20 years...

Isiah was insanely good. Third best player of the 80's, behind Bird & Magic. And Rodman became one of the most valuable players of the 90's, and could dominate a game without scoring. Completely unique player
@drewmiller3 Жыл бұрын
That is what I think some people miss. The NBA was Bird and Magic, then Isiah forced his way on stage. He was right there with them. Knocked both Bird and Magic off at their peaks. And when you played Isiah he was every bit as worth a rival as Bird was to Magic or Magic was to Bird. Even when he lost to Bird or Magic the series were epic and all time. His unfortunate backing up of Rodman's dumb comment tarnished his legacy and turned him from a guy everybody loved (he was insanely popular across the country) to a guy everybody loved to hate.

I love the Detroit pistons back to back Champion 🏆 1989&1990 and I'm not a pistons fan I'm Seattle Supersonic fan but I like hard defensive team I know media don't even talk about when they bring great Champion teams but I'm former high-school basketball player in the late 80s and student the game

Bad boys were so good, they were a kind of a team that could be so defensive and hard when they wanted to be while being very attractive and attacking scoring lots of points when they wanted to be, So as “bad” as they were, they managed to win and become one of the best team of all times.
@bordaz13 жыл бұрын
NBA films has never done such good work as you're doing ("That Championship Feeling" '83 Sixers comes close, maybe) chronicling the greatness of these players and teams. I've followed hoops journalism for a long time and you are the most unique voice i've heard

Clayton Crowley - you were a 12 year old living in Livonia in 89 weren't you? You missed one hugely important part of the Pistons from that era: Chuck Daily the Head Coach. He was able to recognize the talent they needed where others didn't. The statistic of the ppg of the leading scorer verses the #9 scorer on the team says it all, it was a team effort like few others. That attitude by the Pistons may be one of the extra reasons for their disdain for Michael Jordan's style of play.
