Doctor mike. It’s funny, I was stationed in Japan. Never hear this. But as a teen, one of our small towns high school drop out Jason belnap who was a auto mechanic and dated younger girls…he was 19 dating my friend who was 15. And well come to find out, every girl Jason has been with…well let him lick their eyes. So I’ve heard of the fetish and two marines admitted in 2007 that they also lick women’s eyes. So I am glad to know that what I told them about the infections and damage that can be done was right!

I was a journalist in Japan at the time and I remember this story well. We had our bosses overseas scream at us to find the story and report on it even though we kept telling them it was a hoax. Fortunately we were full time staff (and in Japan can't easily be fire) so we never reported on the story and stuck to our guns. But I heard from a friend of mine from one of the media that did. He had been on holiday and unaware of the story when his newspaper editors overseas had accepted the story from an untried english teacher in Japan with no previous journalism experience. The writer is believed to have based their story from the blogs you mentioned (which are known to be mostly fictional to start with) just to make a few bucks and get a by-line in the media. And while it was a weird one actually this happens all the time. As you say, healthy skepticism is indeed good. Also know your media. Some are more trust worthy than others. Those that correct their mistakes is a start. Also those that pay proper journalists a proper pay and do not rely on cheap one-time from one-time elements without any double checks and verification is another indicator. However with fewer and fewer people willing to pay for proper news online this is getting hard and harder to guarantee.

I'm studying information- and data management. Our main focus is on how to manage the flood of information we're facing every day, in order to prevent false or incomplete informations from spreading. Thank you for covering something so important. It happens so often that news media in any shape or form lack when it comes to proper research. It's all about being the fastest one. Currently I'm an intern at a company or to be exact I'm helping out the content team. What I realized is that they also do quick researches, because they are under the pressure of dead lines. While scanning through the content they produced so far I could find some false informations they grabbed from some online sources, without digging any deeper or questioning it.
@CottonInDerTube2 жыл бұрын
Do you have dead lines? Or do you start or still check the content if its released already? A solution could be: if you still "need" to be the fastest then you could mark every content (public) as "unverified" until it is verified. This way anybody could see the "new"s, but they also know its verification is still in progress.. The verification could then be done by an internal team that a) brings down the content b) brings this content up again (NEW CONTENT =) ) with the real story behind. _IMO b is the way to go. You can get double content out of 1 story and ppl will definetely see the real story. Win win._

With news outlets copying each other without any links to their sources it is real hard to track the origin of a lot of sources. I sometimes take on an adventure of tracking down the origin of various "scientist claims" stories, it is quite fun and scary to see how the information changes and surprisingly often claims the opposite of the original research...
@Fogest2 жыл бұрын
Any time a news group releases an article headlined something like "science says eating this food everyday will make you xyz better" you know it's probably based on some meh study. You go find the study and it will end up being some super tiny study, barely any data, and it found a 0.001% effect. Even when news groups are using a source they still do often misrepresent what the scientific literature actually says. And it's no surprise there are so many anti vaxx people. A lot of people just no longer feel like they can trust what they hear on the news. And unfortunately too often now that is the case.
@aidanya13362 жыл бұрын
@@Fogest That plus you can actually have very narrow studies. I remember cigarette companies having a ton of studies done saying smoking is good for you. But obviously they only looked at narrow subject like social interactions, alertness ect. while staying far far away from cancer risks. Media tends to do the same with covid. Vaccines dont work vs vaccines are 100% effective. "The battle" is more important than the truth sadly.
@Jinxed11 Жыл бұрын
Went to school for media and communications studies, and I also have been learning Japanese for the past few years. These sorts of things just get out of hand rather quickly. The best way to help protect yourself with understanding the truth is to look at not only how other media outlets are portraying a story (if they are at all) and what the source is. Do this especially when a story makes rounds about "studies" stating things like 20% of people are vulnerable to X! Check how many people are studied, who does the study, what the controls are (if applicable), and for surveys, check how the the questions were worded. You'd be surprised how much a few words of difference makes a huge impact on survey answers and intentions!

I appreciated this video so much. As a journalist, this is a PRIME example of why you check your sources. Because once ONE credible site covers something, it will be seen as credible fact by all of the readers, and even fellow journalists. Also, I love the way Mike talks about journalism. He points out the flaws, without attacking anyone or journalism as a whole. You don’t see too many people with such an educated view on things like this.

Glad I've never heard of this before :) Eyes are as precious as your heart & brain. Despite it's size, contains an immaculate complexity and enigma. I should know, I'm very blind with a vision of -7.5 on both eyes respectively (the negative being nearsightedness from 0 being 'perfect' on a number line). I take my vision more seriously now since as of recently with the relief that my vision hasn't worsened much more for years now, but have to be more careful with certain activities and exposures as my retinas have already almost about reached their stretching point (with my eyes being small). Remember to protect your eyes as much as everything else, no matter if anyone else tells you otherwise in life! That includes your lifestyles, too.

Thank you, Dr. Mike, for encouraging your audience to be skeptical and to check multiple sources. As consumers of news and information, we shouldn't have to do that, but unfortunately that's the state of the world we live in; misinformation abounds, and it spreads across social media. What makes it worse are popular figures on social media with millions of followers who either deliberately, or mistakenly, spread information with the power to cause real harm. I'm glad we have people like you working to help stop that spread of misinformation.

So much so that my theater class was asked to put on a funny skit in an all school assembly about the dangers of eye licking in an attempt to dissuade students from taking part.
