Burt Lancaster was an American actor and producer. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender heart, over his 45-year career in films and television, he achieved success by taking on more complex and challenging roles.
He was a four-time Academy Award nominee for Best Actor and also received two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. The American Film Institute ranked Lancaster 19th among the greatest male stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
After the successful film "From Here to Eternity," Burt gained high popularity in Hollywood. The actor had a athletic physique, which made him sought after for underwear modeling.

You're mixing and matching different fruits. Jeff Chandler and John Wayne? Alan Ladd and Clark Gable? Not even the same species. James Ellroy had Lancaster operating a private torture chamber. I hope that's what this video confirms. Lancaster had a couple of gimmicks as an actor, on par with the Richard Burton shriek. You coukd plot the voice intonations on a graph. He portrayed sanctimony better than anyone, in movies and in real life, and he was a great JJ - otherwise meh+. Athletic, gays lived him. I saw Burt Lancaster live during a screening of " From Here to Eternity" in 1983 at the Strand Theater in Santa Monica. Burt had concealed his identity and was simply listed as "with special guest" on the film schedule. The audience was shocked to realize that the special guest was Burt himself. What an awesome energy field the man had. While fielding questions from the audience, Burt was suddenly staring at me with those penetrating eyes. Too starstruck and timid, I didn't take his cue. Only years later, did I read that Lancaster had participated in the March in Washington, walking side by side with Dr. King. I was the only black man sitting in the audience that afternoon back in 1983.

The first color movie that I ever saw was Burt Lancaster's "The Crimson Pirate" in 1952 at age 6! His powerful performances continued through the 1950's, with his acrobatic stunts in "Vera Cruz" '54 & "Trapeze" in "'55", Lancaster never failed to entertain, for over 40 years, even when he reached old age!/ p.s. I have always felt that, had the "Batman" movie series, been made 30 years earlier, Burt, with his acrobatic background, would have been perfect for the role!

My best friend was a foreign exchange student around 1979 and he spoke perfect English. We went to go watch "Go tell the Spartans" one time and he understood instantly when I explained America's crazy war culture and the Vietnam war. He was of course already familiar with Burt Lancaster from one million cowboy movies. He also translated the scenes that had French in that film for us with ease.

I was born and raised in East Harlem and lived a few blocks from where Burt lived I later found out. From the very beginning I admired Burt’s acting abilities, from “Kiss the Blood off my hands” (the title grabbed me” to Valdez is coming, my favorite a true western in my opinion! Like someone said above “what someone does in the privacy of their home is their business “. So, whatever lifestyle he chose was his business and as far as I’m concerned he was a great actor. As a youngster of only 68 I had watched many of his movies on TV. What was not to like? When I watched him as Doc. Graham in "Field of Dreams' I had such an emotional rush that I sobbed. 1966-1970 I was in the Navy. One of the guys in my unit, before he joined the Navy to avoid the draft. He worked at one of the BIG Hollywood Studios. He was in the section where raw film was cut into movies. He told us stories about two actors who were shielded by the Hollywood Moguls. Burt Lancaster& Rock Hudson. Nobody ever matched Lancaster's dynamism and athleticism in action movies. He is still being underrated. I'd rather watch the Crimson Pirate than the latest Marvel movie any day of the week.

One of his wonderful though small was as a german magnate of a company which employed slave labour in WWll, his acceptance of the evil he took part in, dignified and world weary was great, i ask you to watch Judgement at Nuremburg. It has many other great performances noy least from Spencer Tracy.

Two of my favorite Lancaster films are Apache with Jean Peters and Charles Bronson. Also Atlantic City with Susan Sarandon. Some very tender scenes with his unabashed vitality.

Burt was what we call a one dimensional actor, definitely not a character actor. Brilliant onscreen & a top box office draw, Burt certainly had the 'IT' factor but he was always, like 99% of actors one dimensional, he always played to type, the same character! Great character actors, above Lancaster & other one dimensional actors, were the likes of Danny de Vito, John Mills, Alec Guinness, Robert De Nero, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis etc.
