The level design in Elden Ring legacy dungeon is better than most of other Souls areas in previous games - Taken alone those are easily 30 hours of gameplay in itself. The side-castles are also not that bad, with some highlights (e.g. Caria Manor) which while not exceptional are also better than a bunch of other Souls levels in the past (e.g. Caria Manor has much better design and progression than something like New Londo or Byrgenwerth). While the caves/catacombs etc. can be quite repetitive in assets and enemy, they all have their own unique level design and unique items as well, which in the context of an open-world game is incredible. Moreover you fail to acknowledge how there are plenty of very intricate catacombs as well (such as the Leyndell and Darklight catacombs). This without acknowledging how well executed is the layout of the world itself, the amount of unique locations, enemies and different topology within the open-world. This is further highlighted in the DLC where the world itself becomes one huge intricate level with tons of verticality (which is something the base-game still does to a lesser degree with areas like Mount-Gelmir or Siofra River).

I acknowledge a lot of those dungeons have unique features. That doesn't make them uniquely interesting, though, because there were only so many assets the developers had to work with. You'll keep seeing the same walls and gargoyles everywhere, which is visually detrimental. Their level design is fine, but I didn't get the feeling I was exploring any particular cave/dungeon, just area #351 or depths #943. As for most of the main story areas, I liked Raya Lucaria well enough, but most were just big open fields. Granted, big open fields where you pull a lever to lower an elevator to go to a different level, but big open fields nonetheless. Just not what I'm looking for. Hence, my disappointment in the end.

this is the wrong take. elden ring combines highly detailed dungeon crafting from the souls games with an open world experience. it doesn't take away from it. i'm playing through dark souls 1 now after elden ring and the elden ring castles are better designed.

I don't see how they combined the dungeon design with the open world at all. The levels are now reachable via a large map, instead of being interwoven. If that's well designed, Rayman Revolution is a masterpiece.

Is there an open world in Mario? Or is it closed? I'm a big fan of Mario

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury on the Switch has an open world in the Bowser's Fury mode, as far as I know. 👍

I haven't played it, but Elden Ring appears to prove how Souls' mainstream appeal lies in its combat challenges. Seeing as how casuals massively prefer Elden Ring over the earlier titles. As you said, the biggest difference lies in traversal, exchanging complexity with freedom. For me personally, the combat aspects are only interesting in the context of the complex level design, which is part of why I haven't bothered with Elden Ring.

@@stomboyyuffie Yeah, I just kept looking for that enthralling level design in Elden Ring, but 99% of the time, it just isn't there.

The game still has complex boss fights. Y’all are def smoking some d!ck . The only problem with ER I’d say is the massive world with mostly empty areas of interactive NPCs. Maybe if it was a linear game there wouldn’t be massive areas with mostly empty space but when a fight happens it goes down. Plus pvp fun as hell. Yall trippin fr.

Your take on this is trash af bro. I know ppl personally who have never played a souls type game and ER turned out to be their first. Which they very much enjoyed and are now playing other fromsoftware games.

Good work on missing the point. Let’s not lie about the objective truth in Elden Rings open world lacking substance. It’s a masterpiece but the point is to highlight how the level design doesn’t not even operate in the same echelon as say a Bethesda title.

@@jacksoncoyne4890ah yes Bethesda’s masterpiece of world and level design…. Starfield
@jacksoncoyne48904 күн бұрын
@ I’m not referring to Starfield. Even so, that title has more substance in its handcrafted locations.

@@jacksoncoyne4890 I don't understand your point. You're saying Elden Ring's level design is not deep and Bethesda level design is, therefore Elden Ring is a masterpiece and I'm wrong?

@@mahsakoochak7885 A 2022 action roleplaying game made by Japanese developer FromSoftware. The previous games by these people were set in smaller, more streamlined worlds, while this one is set in a more open, less designed world. Hope this helps ✌️
