Have had mine for about. 15 years. I have many others that I also use, but this is my go to in most cases. It is a little large for skinning rabbits and squirls, but I have done that too. I always carry a Leatherman Wave and a carbon steel folder on me all the time. Love your knife !!!!

He does say it perfectly, a jack of all trades, master of none. So people should stop bashing because its not a ... (fill in random task) knife. It can be used to fill in and in a pinch and will do fine. It doesn't replace them. If you have the luxury of carrying multiple, then you should, but probably in a survival situation you will be damn happy to have it.

i go in the woods before thanksgiving, i come out after new years. i have a canvas tent with wood stove. i take a tracker knife (not tom brown), a tomahawk with a hammer on one side and a 'razor knife'. i'd say i use the tracker the most out of these blades. (it chops wood about as good as the hawk and after i use it more than the razor knife during skinning/fleshing/tanning). i just figured folks that say these knives suck, well, don't spend much time in the woods.

thank you for not bashing the knife and explaining its history. I love this knife design and i think it simply takes getting used to. Every time i buy a new EDC knife its different to deploy it and you have to get used to it.. id assume its similar with bigger outdoors knives.. you gotta get the hacking down and use the blades for their intended purposes. Im looking into the T4 just because its a nice smaller size and i own a bk10 already so theres no need for another 5-6.5 inch blade knife. id rather a nice neck knife. Thank you again for this review and giving me reasons to buy this knife!

The Tom brown tracker is a great all around survival one tool option! I have my hand made forged 12in favorite Bowie knife myself. I had made in TEXAS by a very talented blade smith! He made this from his own alloys that he says includes car axles and other super metals. It's strength is above the rest for sure! 12 years of hard use doing every task including survival, hunting, chopping small trees, batoning wood, shelter building, kitchen use in my cabin etc... and still no issues! But that cost a hefty pretty penny and not many people want to pay for them! I ask the blade smith if he could make me a meteorite strength bowie knife as strong as an original! From my experience it is the closest I have ever seen! My grandfather had an original Bowie knife that he got from his father who carried the bowie himself and it impressed me with how sharp cuting paper and strong it was it never seemed to get dull! My grandfather born 1886 carried that bowie knife in WW1 in france, Germany and Europe! He said in combat he actually cut and broke a guys sword in two with that Bowie knife!

I just spoke with Dave Beck about the history of this knife and he confirmed that what I say in this video is accurate. He is also, once again, making his version of this knife and I am now on his 2 year waiting list for a BK023 MODEL "C" Gen2 WSK. What is said below about the T-1 is also accurate. According to Dave Beck, Tom needed/wanted a more cost competitive version of the knife that could be produced fast in higher quantities so that he could sell his knife to his students. Dave Beck does everything by hand which is why his production quantities are low and the cost is higher. Many of his clients are SPECOPS folks and if they are willing to wait 22 to 24 months to get one of these blades, you can bet they are worth it. Again, this knife is not for everyone and as stated earlier, it is a "Jack of many trades, master of none".

This is not the best knife for processing wood, it is not as good as an axe or saw, it is not great for fine carving tasks but it is the knife/tool that I (and many like minded people) would want to have in a survival situation. If you are interested, here is the link to Dave Beck's site ( www.drbeckknives.com/WSK-KNIVES.html ) where he explains the anatomy and design of his version of this knife. It was great speaking with him and I look forward to getting my hands on my Beck WSK C gen 2.

Its funny how everyone who bashes this knife doesn't own it.. I was skeptical when i ordered my TBT, as i am with all blade orders.. I got my first knife when i was 5 and since then i have owned and handled 100s of blades... The first time i held this knife i knew i made the right choice.. Every once in a while a knife comes along that when held it becomes more than just a hunk of steel, but an extension of your arm.. For me the Tom Brown Tracker is one of those knives.

I will admit. This is not a conventional looking knife. However when you watch someone use it who has skill and knows all the purposes of the knife. It really made me want one. So far I've had to settle for the t2. So when I get a few hundred together I plan on buying the big boy version. I'm a pretty big guy and I think it would fit in my hand with no problem. To be honest I was worried about sharpening these things. But I have had no trouble sharpening mine. I just divided the knife in three parts and sharpened each part one of the time. Now it is wicked sharp and holds the edge a long time. I'm going to try to use this as my main knife all the time. More you use it the easier everything gets. And I never had any trouble with any part of this straight out of the box. It's a great knife. It may not be a great night for all people. Like anything you have to develop a skill. Like the character. Falsadoom from the original Conan movie said. What is a blade when compared against the hand that uses it. You can have the best blade in the world and still can't do anything with it. Or you can have a chunk of stone and do just about anything. So everyone who thinks this knife is a failure you should probably look inside of themselves because that is where failure comes from not inanimate objects

The interesting aspect of this knife is the weight of 14.6oz and it was used as a blade to fight with a movie, movie magic suspended; As a person trained to fight with a blade it would be like using an ax with one hand and wondering why its hard to hold and it moves slowly. The best blade to fight with is light, sharp and not too long as it takes more skill to place a long blade on the target.

Well in his defence, he never actually said how he had used his knife. He said what you can do with it. The only thing that I do not agree with is that the teeth on the spine can saw wood. The teeth on the spine are made for making notches. Knives I use are Busse combat, ESEE, Survive GSO, Ontario spec plus II, TOPS, Bark River, Fällkniven, Mora etc. With that said my opinion is that the Tom Brown Tracker is a good knife. To use the TBT for fine tasks is a pain in the... But I have used it for field dressing several deer, making some bow drills, hacking through ice, baton firewood etc. The sheath is use with my TBT is from hedgehog leatherworks, great combo. I guess if the price on the knife would be lower more people would try it out. Thanks for the vid

good vid. Girly guys that can't handle a large blade effectively are always gonna cry and whine. "It's too thick!" "It's too heavy!" "It's too big!" The same guys that complain about how awkward this knife is for finer carving tasks or skinning squirrels and rabbits probably also complain that a felling axe is too big for their backpacks. Some people just want to complain no matter what and will avoid the use of common sense if it allows them to manufacturer a reason to whine. I don't own a TBT. But anyone that complains about it's size, thickness, or weight as an all-around daypack knife will have the same complaints about the knife I carry for that purpose. Good video, Brother. Well put. To hell with the "too big" "movie prop" "gimmick" naysayers without the brains to figure out what the knife was made for. Let'em whine. Tune'em out.
@brotherbreeze8351

Reading comprehension isn't your strongpoint I see. I cannot bring my, "silly dumb tracker" because I do not own one. (Line 6) Perhaps you just skipped that part? Kind of like you skipped reading comprehension in grade school? My regular carry in the woods is a Mora Companion. I have about a dozen of them and they do most everything I have ever needed done outside of small chopping tasks. " . . . finishes all the tasks first!" ??? The lack of logic in that statement is ponderous. You racing somebody? In a big hurry? Perhaps you should think about what you want to say and only then write sentences. I do not know how to respond to your last sentence. Try again - and use logic. It will be appreciated.
@brotherbreeze8351
@brotherbreeze8351 7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I misunderstood your comment. Explain to me how your comment addresses my assertion that someone complaining about a large, hatchet-like blade not being useful for finer carving tasks or skinning squirrels is like complaining about a felling axe being too large for a backpack, then I will admit a mistake. Your comment consists of two sentences, one of which is a run-on sentence. The first is a question that sets up your point. The second seems to be a challenge to compare a Kellam Puuko to a TBT at finer carving tasks and skinning a squirrel. Correct me if I am wrong there. My entire point is that a TBT is not INTENDED to be used for finer carving tasks or squirrel skinning; just as a felling axe is not intended to be used in a backpacking situation. So complaining about it is like complaining about your Corvette because it can't carry half a cord of wood. That is whining. A Corvette is an automobile just like an F-150. But they are intended to serve entirely different purposes. I realize that another analogy might not be the best way for me to further explain my point as the first one was either misunderstood OR your reading comprehension was weak, but it is usually an effective literary tool. I can use a logical syllogism if that would be a better communication device. Or maybe I am just completely missing how your statement answers my point because of some other reason, but, if anything, I find that your comment AGREES with my underlying assertion. After all, a Kellam Puuko is really just a finer but similar tool as my Mora - both of which are well-suited to finer carving tasks and squirrel skinning. (And one does not really need a knife to skin a squirrel.)
@brotherbreeze8351
@brotherbreeze8351 7 жыл бұрын
And for the record, my argument was NOT, " people are girly men, and whiners for not wanting to use a heavy poorly designs fan boy blade!" My argument is that people are girly men and whiners for EXPECTING a TBT to be well-suited for finer carving tasks or skinning really small game. The man literally said the blade is a Jack-of-all-trades and a mater to NONE. You appear to be countering an argument all right - but not mine. I CAN use a TBT to skin a squirrel. I CAN use a TBT for fine carving tasks. But if I have the option (and I always do) I would use my Mora for those tasks instead because they are well-suited for them. I still maintain you missed my point. You can blame me for not communicating my point well if you like. That is a subjective opinion. But you cannot put words in my mouth and accuse me of making an argument or assertion that I did not make. I'll fight you on that 'til the end.

To each his own. But, that is just it. I NEVER go into the field or the backcountry without (1) an RMJ tomahawk and (2) at least one knife. The problem with the Tom Brown Tracker is it assumes that you would want a knife that can process wood and chop and saw. I really don't. The so-called mythos of a true "survival knife" that can "do it all" is pretty much an exercise in futility in the mind of any experienced outdoorsman. Since the dawn of time, man has easily determined that there are some things you would like to have a big blade for and some things you would like to have a small blade for. It was only shortly thereafter that man also determined that big bladed projects were better handled ergonomically by an axe, hatchet, etc. The problem with the Tom Brown Tracker is not that it is too big. The problem is that it is a knife that is trying to be an "all in one" tool. In the end, it will never be good at chopping as a hatchet, axe or tomahawk. It will never process wood like an ax or saw. Likewise, it will always suck at small bladed tasks like gutting and filleting fish, precision cutting, drilling, skinning. In the end, the tracker (like so many other "survival knives") tries to be a "Jack of All Trades", but they are all just really "masters of none." Better to bring a survival hawk for large bladed tasks and a smaller bladed knife for small blade tasks. Personally, I bring an RMJ CRKT Kangee tactical tomahawk everywhere I go. It is a far better big bladed survival tool than the tracker (and is about half the price to boot). This allows me to bring a tops pathfinder school fixed blade knife. In other words, a decent sized knife that is not too big and not too small for a multitude of tasks. I also have even smaller knives in my multitool. That way, between a multitool, tomahawk and smaller fixed knife, I have my bases covered.

Deltarocks1 You can skin and process any animal with any type of knife big or small , provided it's sharp enough. The Tracker Knife actually works surprisingly well at skinning, by choking up and gripping the blade by the saw/notching back, it works very much like an ULU and is very comfortable to hold while providing great control. Can it be used for skinning? Absolutely. Is it the best option for skinning? No.

It is large and I find it a bit too cumberson to use. It is STILL a great knife and one I can pass on to my son or daughter (who is larger than me). This knife can last more than a lifetime if properly cared for.

I have had a the tracker since the 80s. I dont think its a tom brown tracker . It is made by someone else . It has been my second favorite knife for a long time . I never heard of a tracker knife until 6 months ago .

What is top part for? Is that actually a saw? It can saw through wood or?
@VABCKPKR
@VABCKPKR 8 жыл бұрын
The saw teeth are intended for and great at notching, not intended or recommended to use for sawing. They do have an excellent aggressive bite, but due to the short length, you would have to expend a lot of time and energy trying to saw through anything substantial.

The only thing unique about the knife is the secondary point where the straight blade transitions to the curve. Basically its like a recurve/tanto combination in that respect. However, that second point will be a hindrance when trying to use the full length of the blade. Also, saw teeth, "wire cutters", and notches on knives and not very useful. It's heavy and durable, but also clunky. Skinning and doing fine tasks is not ideal with a 1/4" thick knife. Quality isn't the problem, rather the knife tries be too much and ends up being less than ideal for most tasks a knife user would need it for. Let's face it, the movie portrayed this knife as being a combat knife and one-tool survival knife, but who is ever actually in that situation?

I too own this knife. But there is a difference between yours and mine...... Mine has lots of wear marks and the coating is heavily warn. Yours, looks brand new. I have also removed the coating along the spine for firesteel use, and removed the saw teeth. I have never used them. I can knotch just fine with the edge I see zero use for the T3 or T4. I pair my T1 with a good pocket knife. Never had a single issue.

I want one just cause. but I have yet to see the notches on the back saw anything they look more like jimping to grip your baton/ reduce shock ie a tooth break rather than something more severe. at best maybe you can notch with the notches. since those aren't saw teeth I'd say you can't saw. and they look dull. - just a prospective buyer

I love the knife but I don't see a mark on it. I have one in tan and one in black. Both have signs of heavy use, especially the tan one where almost all the coating is wore off. I will have the 20th anniversary tracker coming in the mail on Monday and it will get beat like a red headed step child.

Do some deeper digging and you will find their is an original (pre TB) tracker design. The knife is still being made by the designer. That said, it is a good GP blade. I like a big strong sharp blade. I can do anything with my Randall, KBar, TB that anyone can do with their small blades including minor field surgery. I did reprofile the skinning radius. TOPS does have top shelf service but KEET YOUR RECEIPT.
