I have always thought the profile of the TOPS Tracker could use a reshaping. The compound convex/hollow is exactly what was called for. Nice work.

I've liked this design ever since I saw it ! And after finding out what the knife is designed to do I loved it people that say its a bad design they obviously don't know what they're talking about !! The kind of guys that think its a good idea to chop down a 10 inch tree with a 12 inch blade lol gotta love those guys
@jamesbowen5573
@jamesbowen5573 3 жыл бұрын
I know right... seems like those guys don't know much of anything. In survival the biggest wood you process is typically 4 inches. If you can only find 10 inch, and nothing smaller, you have problems. I love the tracker design. Once you know what each part does it is more impressive. The same guys who hate it, are using a borrowed one with absolutely no wear. How can you like or hate if you never used it before? One time infront of a camera doesn't count. These same guys think mylar blankets work well to wrap up in...maybe they should field test things before telling others about how to think about it.

Makes a lot of sense. Considering the Tracker is a survival knife, I always thought it goofy that the coating on it prevents you from being able to strike a ferro rod. I see you've fixed that problem.

nice job on the grind and finish, I have a tracker also, and mod'd it a bit as well, but not so much on the edge profile, I took the saw off, now it has an upswept, trailing point I believe it is called. looks really cool, and much better for batoning. hopefully soon I'll have my own vid on it. great job again.

@smithjacusmc

Yeah the book said for making notch's for snares and the like, i know and have used it for such, but not much, and i can still notch with it, just no saw. I like the tracker wih and without the saw, it's jjust a great knife.

That is an absolutely profound change to a great knife that makes it even better. Can you do a regrind like this for others as a service? I would sign up for that immediately! I have a fresh TBT that I would love to have altered. I would do it myself, except I do not have the proper tools or experience and would probably ruin my knife, lol.
@averageiowaguy
@averageiowaguy 8 жыл бұрын
+Steven “Shooter11b” Szabo I do not offer regrinds of knives made by other makers. The problem is, there could be issues with the heat treat on a knife before I even touch it, but I cannot prove it after I've ground the knife.
@Shooter11B
@Shooter11B 8 жыл бұрын
Bummer. Right now the knife is generally useless to me and I would not even care honestly if it got messed up. The chance that it can be fixed is one I am willing to take irregardless of the outcome. I would do it myself but I do not have the equipment or the expertise. I understand your position though. Thanks for responding.

Hey Kyle kind of off subject but can you do a video about packs. Like some of your favorite models and why. I know you used the vulture 2 in a few videos and I have some interest in that pack or any others with its capability
@averageiowaguy
@averageiowaguy 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah one of these times I'll do a pack video. I like the Vulture 2 a lot. It works for the short trips or for longer trips where you can hunt/forage your food. I recently did 2 weeks in the mountains where I had to pack in all my food. Vulture 2 wouldn't have worked for that.

+willebiggz I don't offer regrinds of other people's knives. Reason being, I don't know what I am getting in the mail. There were never any teeth on the orange handled design. That was something that Jim Nowka and I made up at a Grind In at Bark River Knife and Tool. They made 20 after we left and sold all 20 in 2 hours. Another run might be coming from BR. Mike talked about it in The Knife Journal Podcast Episode 39 (editing it now.)

Hi, the "saw" is, I think, one of the thing, which separate lovers and haters of this knife. I like it, because it works. NOT as a regular saw, but you can go through say 1 inch wood easily but for me, not for reason split the wood, but for a notch (for tie some rope, in trap settings etc.), or to make a shavings for fire starting, or just use it as a plane to make a flat part of something... And in original TBT 1 manual, they say, as I remember, it can cut you out from fallen aircraft (if you are lucky, got the knife in hand and you are still alive;-) .

Interesting comment on the design, comparing it to a bowie knife in terms of base design. I never used one myself but it struck me as more gimmick based than practical. I would be interested in a more detailed commentary if you cared to do so.
@averageiowaguy
@averageiowaguy 10 жыл бұрын
I'll probably do a video some day on it. I would separate the knife use from the knife design. I now have a fair amount of experience using the design, executed by various makers. I don't think how it is used or how useful it is would be a factor in whether or not knife makers eventually take on the design to put their own spin on it. Case in point: How useful is a 12 inch Bowie with gold and ivory inlay, homemade meteorite Damascus and jewels on the pommel? But makers still make the hell out of them because it is a challenging knife to make well and it lets you show your skill. Same thing with the Tracker design. I can tell you that the grind I put on this knife is NOT easy to do, especially free hand with no jigs/fixtures/etc. The design also lends itself to tweaks for better performance. The tweaks you choose and their effects on performance show off your skill. Additionally, there is an entire generation of knife lovers who are basically written off now but will eventually become the main buyers people cater to. They were inspired by the movie 'The Hunted' just like I was inspired by Rambo. Right or wrong, they exist and one day they will be the people buying knives, and makers from their generation will be the ones making knives. Just a theory, but time will tell. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@averageiowaguy Aesthetics is one thing. I guess there is a crowd of people who goes by looks. I don't take those people seriously. We all have what we like and what we don't like. What matters is the performance. What good is something if you never use it? The tracker has so many different uses. If you own one or want to own one you should at least research the different things the knife does. And it requires skill to use just as any knife does. If someone has the skill they can do just about anything with any knife. I think a lot of the best knives have a grind that you can resharpen out in the field. If it has something that requires equipment what good is it to use. The teeth on top or not for cutting they are for notching. The first Notch is deeper because you can use it to pick up the handles on pots over a fire the wire handle fits inside that notch. The curve on the back is for processing skins you can lay across your arm. You can use it as a small Hatchet and the hook part makes feather sticks like you wouldn't believe it's also good for fine cutting. Such as taking bark off a tree. It looks pretty all shiny. But the coating you took off was for protection. in a practical sense it keeps it from rusting when you're using it in the field.

"someday make their own take?" google "koster wsk". i think he basically nailed it. very practical. it's based on an actual khukri design, not just a KLO (khukri shaped object) imho, TOPS implementation missed Beck's inspiration/design. a bit. he's also made his mark on Nessmuk patterns, Bushcraft, and others. great work. it looks like the tracker you worked on, at the BRKT grind in is also a good take, more like the Beck design. in the tracker/parang space, i'm pretty sure TM HUNT nailed his design with the M18. very nice. very very.

Why put a grind on it does it change how the knife works, but besides being shiny? Personally it looked better the way it was just saying
@kaizoebara
@kaizoebara 10 жыл бұрын
Of course it changes the way the knife works. He knocked off a lot of steel to improve the cutting geometry - it will now be much more useful than the unaltered TOPS which is nothing but a sharpened pry bar. If you prefer the black blade you can still use some gun blue, or duracoat, or sth. else to blacken the blade.
