I totally understand people who state they would not want to get too bulky. The sole reason I did not pursue engineering and physics is I didn’t want to be somehow tricked into being an astronaut and live at the ISS for 6 months.

Tbh, in this clip I feel like Huberman has not missed but is intentionally ignoring Chris’s craft. Huberman has some important things to say but he’s really coming across as treating Chris’s podcast as his personal production crew. No awareness of the set, minimal interaction with what Chris said or what his motivation was in crafting those questions and others. It was very distracting to me for Huberman to come across in that way.

Being a cross country runner in High School I can totally agree. Love cardio and hate weights. I wish they would have advocated more of a push of resistance training for me though. Huberman is absolutely right about runners always being sore. I've recently been running and doing weight and I find that i get less burnout and maintain healthy workout routines. There needs to be overall body training. It's not just one or the other.

I'm one of those people who hated the gym. It was always SO boring to me. I preferred to do "fun" sports. However the place where I live now does not grant me affordable access to the exercise I used to do (watersports is very expensive here, also the climate is an obstacle as well). So I let it hang. For too long. Then some shit went down at work which had me in a messed up mental state. I decided that the first step to get my mind in order was to get my body in order. I started going to the gym again. Since then I'm feeling immensely more calm and centered in myself. My mood has improved considerably and now I actually enjoy going to the gym.

Hating exercise is just about making a new habit. Took me a few months, went anyway even though I thought I was tired, wouldn't be able to do anything, I went to the gym or out on my bike. And then sometimes it turned out to be a great session anyways. Now it feels wrong if I have more than one day without doing anything.

Nobody ever picked up some weights in the gym and all of a sudden became "too bulky." As a young woman I used to think that. I think it comes from looking at the physique of a female power lifter or body builder and finding that look to be a little disenchanting. It took me to realise that they are really training specifically for that, and that also, their genetics obviously play a huge role in how their bodies look. I love weights now. But don’t JUST do weights. I incorporate it in with cardio, HIT workouts etc. so while I do put on muscle, it simply improves my posture, balance, energy and strength, but adds to the femininity of my physique. People say things like that because they are wildly misinformed about what training does to the body. It’s actually a bit of misnomer passed down from the older generations too. It was actually my dad that started getting really uptight about women doing weights. He would train me in highschool and such, and would only ever prescribe me a weight under like 10kg lol He’s an avid gym goer, and hugely supportive of people pursuing fitness. But he was not impressed when my mum and I started picking up heavy shit haha He’s over it now though, and very encouraging. He just had always thought that women shouldn’t do weights 🤷🏻‍♀️ for that reason (women get too ‘bulky’ and I guess he also just though because we’re not as strong, that we were more likely to hurt ourselves?? But with correct technique and an honest awareness of your own strength and limits, I’m only as at risk of an injury as any other bloke in the gym haha

This along with the guayusa he suggested gets me feeling peppy, gives me stamina, wake my ass UP out of a slump and gets me sweating. Honestly, I thought about exercising before Andrew (thanks to Chris Heria) but after watching Andrew and trying to find ways to get more stamina to workout longer (and correctly separate my day via HARD WORK vs CREATIVE work) I feel like my workout days and my life in general has changed. Re: women not wanting to bulk up, maybe it's that old saying "You have to see it to be it". If all women saw was juiced up she hulks who claimed to be natties, then it's pretty understandable they'd be cautious. It's just as unrealistic as guys thinking they're gonna be Arnie as natties. This is the fallout from Weider, then social media, etc. Thank God for channels like these. 🏋️‍♀️

I've found rubber bands and tubes are the best for beginners, you can build yourself up a bit and strengthen your core, but in private, there is nothing worst then being in a room full of big bulky blokes when starting out lifting 10kg. be interesting how EMS affects the body chemistry?

I don’t have to use public gyms anymore thank God. But I did for years and I know that feeling well. It took me YEARS to muster the courage to use the free weight section. It was so intimidating having all those huge blokes in their throwing around ridiculous weights 😂 But when I finally bit the bullet and went in there - I quickly realised - literally no one gives a shit about what I’m doing. Everyone’s in there, grinding away and being critical of their own physique in the mirror. No one’s going “haha look at that chick, she’s only bicep curling with 10kg, what a pussy” Also, I found people to be quite helpful and willing to give tips and help me streamline my own training :)

@@meghan8020 exactly this, I've been training for 20 years now in gyms 4-6 times a week and never seen anyone ridiculing others or beginners. We're all there to learn and get better, I still learn even now. Sure some people are arseholes but that is not a gym specific thing, and it is the minority. Most people if asked will help out and are just there for themselves and to improve themselves, they really don't care.

Based on my own experience it may be sufficient to combine cardio training with other exercise that's not resistance training to maintain strength and muscle mass. I lifted weights in my 20s and decades later alternated yoga and swimming, along with more running input, and it seems like enough for maintenance. Of course he is talking about other factors than aesthetics, and sufficient muscle mass to store glycogen (offsetting blood sugar spikes and insulin resistance), and the kind of strength that makes picking up something weighing 50 pounds seem easy. Still those are important factors, with only aesthetics not so critical for me. I'm not really aging much either, but that's a longer story.

I think we've always known the importance of linking mind and body, our Greek ancestors preached this thousands of years ago. It's a matter of mental fortitude to habituate the strengthening of mind and body on a daily basis. unfortunately, it seems most people are incapable, or in worse cases do not see the value.

Bert probably won't quit until he gets a real health scare related to booze, like a heart attack or something. Reason being, he has one of the most insane egos out there. I guess that brought him success at least, but also makes him think he's excluded from alcohol actually being bad for him, since he has the 'Mickey Mantle gene', never mind that Mickey died at 64 from liver cancer.
@25johnlowe

it's tricky as he looks as it as his way to have fun/let off steam/relax etc. It needs a mindset change and that's the only way it will happen, health scare may do it you're right, and it does for many. Not a fan of his comedy but sad to see none the less.
