The Truth About Zero Turn Mowers - Myths Debunked

There's a lot of misinformation about zero turn riding mowers. I've heard a lot of WHOPPERS about why a zero turn isn't as good as a riding mower, so let's set the record straight. Are zero turn mowers bad on hills? Are Zero turn mowers hard to operate? Let's answer those questions!

I Agree with everything you said except for 6:53 0 turns I've had a lot of experience with 0 turns and lawn tractors. 0 turns get stuck so much easier and yes, I've gotten lawn tractors stuck too, but 0 turns, just it happens more often

I agree, I have both and in the spring I favor the lawn tractor with its mower. My zero has loaded tires, does that make it worse? I thought it made it better, I'll have to try unloaded tires, maybe?

I agree. Especially awesome when you have a lot of trees, or other stuff to mow around. I still keep my traditional rider to bag cuttings (mostly for compost).

Hills & slopes... I have a Cub Cadet ZTR with a steering wheel, and you're right, they're great on hills. That's the sole reason I went with the steering wheel version. Hard to use... I also have a lap-bar ZTR, and while neither of my ZTRs are hard to use, I am more accurate with my steering wheel model. I can mow faster up next to obstacles without hitting them. And I can mow with less overlap from row to row. Mine CC ZTR is the only riding mower I've ever used that has a suspension seat, and it's more comfortable than any other mower I've used.

I like lawn and garden Equipment, I enjoy working on them I enjoy working with them, I work on and with them as a hobby some out work others but at the end of the day, if you just need to cut your grass. most any lawnmower will get the job done. . . .

FYI we own the steering wheel zero turn and if you actually zero turn it it will leave a ~10"-12" circle under the non-moving rear tire. The lever guys apparently can actually reverse the opposite wheel.

Depends if you have a very expensive model than a standard residential model. They don't have suspension seats and on a rough lawn they will beat the hell out of you. The cheapest zeroturn I've seen with a suspension seat was $9,000 and for the really goo suspension seats they were close to $15,000 I don't need a car payment to mow my lawn.

Zero turns don’t cut as well…who was the crackhead who said that…that’s the main reason you buy one is the cut quality and the time savings.

On a hill with zero turn mower mow with the slope not up and down. A zero turn will wheelie up hill. When going with the slope if it loses traction just point it down hill and it won't flip. Don't listen to the people that say to point uphill and back down, if you're doing that then it's not steep anyways

Technically, the safest is to keep your front end pointed downhill at all times, but if the slope is so steep that you're backing up it, it might be a good idea to find an alternative

On all the zero turns, why don’t they fix the front wheels with shocks on them to help keep pressure on the back wheels

If the front wheels were keeping pressure on the back wheels, they would tend to dig in and in soft turf or mud, they'll be even more prone to get stuck. Some zt's do have shocks on the front casters but it's for ride comfort and not for traction

Learning curve? What? My wife hopped on my zero turn and was cutting grass with it in about 5 minutes. It's not rocket science.

@@phillydude5150How many divots did she create? There are numerous professionals on and off KZbin who would disagree with your conclusions. I consider myself a relatively intelligent person and I can tell you there is a learning curve to the “proper and efficient” operation of these machines. I suppose like your wife even an idiot can jump on the machine and be cutting grass in a few minutes. But clearly those individuals will be risking their lives and/or damaging property while they do so. Contrary to your devil-may-care attitude, virtually all zero turn mower manuals warn about the dangers of operating these machines on inclines. Your approach to these machines is dangerous and inaccurate. I hope your viewers take your advice with a grain of salt. I most certainly do.
