The Truth Behind Brazil's FPS Dominance

Күн бұрын

When you think of dominant regions in esports, there are a few that instantly come to mind: Korea, Denmark, China.
But while some of the wealthiest nations in the world jockeyed for power, another country was hard at work, trying to grow.
Brazilian FPS players took matters into their own hands, and with almost no money or support, created one of the most passionate communities and some of the greatest players the world has ever seen. From CS:GO to Rainbow Six: Siege, Brazil is everywhere.
The rise of Brazil is one of the most incredible stories in esports - they did it all on their own, and despite some ups and downs, they’re not done yet.

It's not entirely true we don't have internet access in Brazil. Most people have but not exactly high speed. Many people have a PC or notebook, but not for gaming purposes. What people have here is passion on what they do. I grew up playing videogames usually at a friend's house. Only as an young adult making my own money I was able to have a PC with a dedicated GPU. It wasn't state of the art hardware but I had fun playing when I was back from college.

Yeah that part about internet access being rare is outright inaccurate. What we lack is hardware capable of running modern games at a competitive performance level at an affordable price. I’ve got nothing but respect for the Brazilian players! It’s the group of psycho fans online that people have an issue with, sadly. Sending death threats and “demanding respect” when they show none to other teams is a bit gross, and ruins the reputation for the majority of Brazilian fans who are not like that. It’s a sad situation :(

Mibr and G3x were both legendary teams in Brazil, competing and winning big international tournaments like CPL, ESWC and WCG. former cs 1.6 player here. I've never even heard the name Fallen by the time I've played. the cs 1.6 scene was VERY big in Brazil with 3 teams: GC, g3x and Mibr. Kiko and Cogu were the most successful players but a lot of guys like fnx, btt, pava and Gaulês, who became the succesful streamer later, were among players that everyone knew. this is not to demean Fallen in any manner. just goes to show that there was a lot going before him. Classic Mibr even won an international tournment once (eswc I guess) but in Brazil it was known that despite how ignored most guys got by europeans, a guy like Cogu was among the best, if he wasn't the best awper in the world! a guy like Pava was among the best, if wasn't the best Usp shooter in the world aswell. we really guessed what it would be like if we could practice daily not with 50/60 ping, but could, as swedes, finns etc. play with a lan-ping at home. I guess teams like liquid and Furia showed us that we were right to guess.

legend was that there was a player in that Mibr who seemed a little worse than everyone else who was none but the son of the owner of the team Mibr. he owned the biggest servers company around Rio in a time there weren't many local servers' companies. as he paid everyone's sallaries, he had to play hahahhaha out of curiosity, as other legend goes, the highest paid was Cogu, who earned around 6 minimum wages of Brazil. something like an average civil engineer would earn at the time. as it wasn't really profitable and was still seen as a kid's play, many amazing players left. Cogu even tried to play football professionally - in Qatar!!! hahahhaha it may be a reality shock for the youngsters out there to think merely less than 20 years ago, the very best player of his generation left the game to try playing soccer in a country that is probably among the worst of the world - maybe because he dreamt about it but also maybe he would earn more. fnx was already on the spotlight for his work with mainly GC and thanks God kept up the hard work to represent the CS from that era in CS:GO.

For some reason, Brazil is very looked down upon in the Esports community, every single Brazilian can tell you that they have already suffered from racism and prejudice in the Esports landscape, and that can be really demotivating to any future Br esports athlete, so it's very nice to see someone actually recognizing Brazil's achievements

But again Brazil being roasted by mislead information and stereotypes like the “Access to internet and computers is rare” which is false, since about 70M Brazilians access internet through PC, that's 12 times Denmark population, also the "favelas is one of first things to come in mind when you think of Brazil" which is also a super stereotype since 8% of Brazil population lives in the favelas..

I'm a brazillian, so I obviously watched this with a lot of curiosity and a grain of salt. Overall, I think you give professional e-sports a bit too much credit in the popularization of games around here. We're very competitive and social people, which made cyber-cafes very popular around here back in the early 2000s, when good internet and PCs were not exactly affordable. With economy improving around 2010s, the access to internet and PCs followed the same trends and the huge repressed demand played a great part on gaming in general becoming more popular. The rise and success of brazillian e-sports pros happens in this context, but even though we do have amazing crowds everywhere this success is not exactly as known as how you paint it. I've had no idea we had all that success on Rainbow 6 to this day, for example. The idea of living as an e-sport professional is not a thing here to this day. So these cases are seen as huge outliers and no one would even try to become a pro without a very good money source to back them up. Considering the amount of players, I do think we'd have way more pro teams if this was not such a deal breaker.

I am Brazilian, and my theory is that there are many unemployed people and they decide to play and end up getting good at it, and school education sucks and many young people prefer to play and become very good in developed countries these minds are moving to other areas and lower cost of living people prefer to go out instead of playing games, in other more developed countries you can live a decent life with a pizza delivery salary while in Brazil you can barely live with a minimum wage. So they spend a lot of time playing and end up becoming good, tand few here have really good computers because the prices of hardware are absurd and generally competitive FPS games don't need powerful hardwares. There was a time of LanHouses where CS 1.0 was really famous LanHouses were crowded there were 5 on the same street, when hardware became cheaper many lanhouses ended up going bankrupt but the passion for CS and the young people who were good continued and today they are the best we have, I was a kid and frequented Lanhouses this was in 2006

Internet access is not rare in Brazil, who did the research for this video?
@vitorangonese
@vitorangonese 2 жыл бұрын
Lots of fellow Brazilians giving Daniel and theScore shit for saying that "Access to internet and computers is rare in Brazil", proving the point that was made in the video (and called out by Zews) that the Brazilian community can indeed get very toxic when you say anything you "shouldn't" say about Brazil. So I just want to clarify things for anyone who might be interested, and for theScore esports team, who I think did a fantastic job with this video, but got this tiny little thing wrong. Brazil is a huge country in terms of size, approximately 8.5 million km², so even though there's a lot of people here, they're mostly spread out throughout the country. Not only that, Brazil has a big inequality "problem" that's been going on forever. So in some areas you'll have loads of wealthy people, while on others you'll have an entire population that's literally starving poor (I put "problem" under quotes because for me the real problem is poverty, not inequality itself). The thing is the informations that come from the national census, measures the entire country, as if the 26 states were even in terms of poverty, security, unemployment, education, *internet access*, and so on.. So while YES, it is true that there are millions of people in Brazil who, to this day, have never had a computer nor internet connection in their region, there are also millions of people who grew up in wealthier areas and have had computers and internet as a part of their life from the day they were born. So I think that's where theScore research/writing team had it wrong, here's why: To say that "Brazilian pro players, who came from a place where access to internet and computers is rare..." is wrong, because the vast majority of Brazilian pro players and streamers come from these wealthier areas where computers and internet access are not actually rare. Important Note: that's not to say that ALL of the pro players and streamers come from rich families, what I'm just trying to say is that, even if you're middle-class or lower middle-class in the state of São Paulo, or most southern/southeast states for example, you're life quality and the environment you live in is probably better, and completely different to the life quality from someone in a poorer area/state. Great video overall! And for all my Brazilian friends out here in the comments, chill out - they made a small mistake, but theScore esports team has always given us love, so don't be mean to them.

He said access to internet and home computers are rare here in Brazil????? Whaaaaaattt? It's thanks to just a few people?? Man! Even the smallest towns here have at least "good internet connection" and many, have excellent internet connection! Same goes for PCs, PS5's, Xbox one x, high-end PCs, you name it! There are hundreds of big metropoles here just like USA and Canada. We are not just about beaches and favelas! And about the players.. there are thousands of killers in every corner of this continental sized powerhouse for most games you can think of, including FPS based, street fighter, mortal Kombat, and so many more genres!. I really appreciate your video but these few words you said at the beginning shows how this country is so underrated and unknown for many. If we had more opportunities to play on the big stages I assure you people would be amazed about what we can do. Thanks for the video anyway.
