Yes I know it’s comma-la. I was mad when I was editing that I said it wrong. Add it onto the pile of names I mispronounce. lol so to clarify about the cricket thing, I am very deadly afraid of bugs to the point where I can’t face the grasshoppers in my garden rn lol. So in terms of things I would eat, not my first choice

Maybe it would help to think about them as smaller crabs, lobsters or shrimp, they are all somewhat related creatures, they are all basically sea bugs. There was a time when they fed them to prisoners because they were seen as bugs back then. Of course this could turn you off from shell fish so sorry for that. Just saying it's more of a social perception thing.

I want to try more of them. Yes, I'm Asian American, but I don't care what people say. The fact is that insect agriculture takes far fewer resources than raising larger livestock for food, and is a much more efficient and sustainable source of protein. Certain arthropod species are already considered delicacies, as has been pointed out. Yet conservatives have turned this into a culture war issue.

I am half Haitian, my mother is a first generation Haitian American, and my white conservative father voted for Trump in 2016 and plans to do so for the third time. This video spoke to many of my experiences, but most of all you summed up the anti-Black and vitriolic rhetoric that everyone from white liberals to Christian evangelicals directs at Haitians. I want people to understand Vodou is a diasporic religion that emerged from Christianity and African spirituality, and American media worked to demonize this religion through horror movies like white zombie that depicted Black people as vengeful. Pat Robertson used this trope when he blamed Haiti for the natural disasters by claiming Haitians made a “deal with the devil” to liberate themselves from slavery in 1804. Thank you for including historical context that is so often ignored

I can't count how many times a centrist or a republican has said something along the lines of "oh those crazy radical liberals are saying Trump is a Nazi" or "they're making crazy claims that he's like Hitler". Trump was first elected when I was 14 and my brain admittedly wasn't fully developed. I came from a left leaning family and I have always been vehemently anti-Trump, but being on the internet and around more right-leaning people in my school made me feel pressure to not come off as a crazy leftist. Until 2020, I found myself kind of making myself appear center so I could be "fair" and not look like a liberal snowflake. Even though internally I knew Trump was a sexist, racist, bad person, I knew if I actually said these things that they would be brushed off due to plausible deniability. It's a weird experience that I can only really describe as a sort of gaslighting, to hear Trump and Republicans say and do these things and be told "oh no it's not like *that*!" Even though I no longer fear appearing as a crazy liberal and have stopped trying to appease centrists and republicans in my life, this video is so vindicating to those who have KNOWN Trump is supports racism and bigotry for as long as he's had any platform ever. Your explanation and the way you lay out the facts, evidence, and history are so well done. You are an amazing video essayist, and I also hope that this is the last time you have to bring up the orange man on this channel🤞

My mother is also Filipino and voting for Trump. For her, a lot of it is because he courted the evangelicals and after my dad died, my mom went full send back into her faith, so she sees it as voting GOP being the "Christian" thing to do. She knows where I stand because since I was a _child_ I've been politically outspoken - something my father taught me to be! - but even he became very conservative before he died because he had dementia which made him very fearful, and media like Fox News preys very well on those fears.

We Haitian get otherized like you said because of what we represent, self-liberation, and that's subversive. They have to go with the craziest story against us because culturally we're also very western, we were French colony, and we used that cultural commonality during the revolution by singing the Marseillaise and we got some of Napoleon's troops to switch side. Which is why our nation at its independence declared that all men are n---roes, which is a feature of the créole language now the word for man is n--, the moment all white people realize that they're just like us the system will be in big trouble.

Always Jews, but after WWII, there was sympathy for the Jews and hatred of the Germans. It made no difference that the Germans or Jews or Japanese in America may have fled the very issues they are being accused of. I thought it was questionable how they had the fact check done so soon as well. You seem to believe the pet-eating comment was so predictable they knew to call ahead of the debate to fact check something in real time that hasn't even been said yet. Being real time fact check means the claim was made then they checked in with all those officials to rebuttal. FYI I saw videos and shorts from people in Springfield making these claims well before the debate even happened and if you look past your predictive conspiracy theory you just might see it to... so whoever told them there was no evidence 2min after the claim was made wasn't very thorough in their research or they purposefully ignored the claims of the people living in that area because whoever answered the phone at the precinct after business hours didn't share any reports.

While I've been developing this thought for a while, that point really crystalized it for me that maybe my family wanted to stay in Vietnam but they had to move to the US because they were in such abject poverty. Knowing that they suffered the trauma of the war and forced to come here for a better life never fails to make me angry. thank you for this video ♡ i knew, vaguely, of the history of france & usa suppressing & terrorizing haiti, and as always ALWAYS causing people to have to flee their homes and then blaming and inflicting violence on them for what we forced them to do... and even still i learned so much in this video. it's all so horrific, and it's so important to know. your conclusions are so spot on. i am so sorry for what you went through with the white nationalism video. i cant even imagine 💔🫂

You are too generous. I am just an old, fat, white, cis Booma that clicked on the thumbnail first time because you are pretty, and continue to visit for your insight & humor. Your appeal may be more universal than you imagine. I have also realized over the course of my life I am irretrievably naive and your sense of humor helps expand my little universe. TY 4 sharing .

This was a really beautiful and impactful video. Thank you for this. I can only imagine how difficult it can be to receive the brutal and racist attacks you’ve received from pointing out what should be obvious. I’ve been thinking that so much of this fear around Haitians comes from the fear of a successful slave revolution and the implications that still has. Some great history about the US intervention in Haiti throughout the years that I didn’t realize was that extensive! The thoughtful mix of history that isn’t widely available and linking that to our present moment was really eloquent.

I never understood racism. I see it all the time and I certainly understand that a lot of it is implicit bias. I live in Seattle and our racism is usually passive-aggressive but it's still there in spite of the "In This House" BLM signs. It's a middle-class liberal racism that's not always clearly distinguishable from classism. I see the dynamics. I was involved in a public confrontation last month and it became clear that even though it wasn't explicitly racist, it had racist undertones. It involved self-deputization of the one white man who accused a Black man of violating an unspoken rule (which he didn't) and the group of other white people who latched on to that with no other knowledge of the situation. Then after the Black man proved his innocence to the mob, there was that smug entitlement that basically was the same as calling him "boy". They refused to see why what they did was wrong. Eventually, someone who was not originally involved sucker punched him to stop standing up for himself. I didn't know the victim before but we were able to talk, hug, and cry together and he drove me to the train station to go home so we were able to talk more about the issues with liberal racism in the city. White people don't want to talk about racism but things don't get better _unless_ we talk about them. MLK has a quote about how it's very easy for liberal white people in the North to call the racists in the South "racist" because it's also classist. They already looked down on the South. There's always the trope of the poor, ignorant, backwards klansman. But it's also in wealthy liberal areas. This all happened at a gay nude beach, an older white gay man targeting a younger Black gay man. We're not talking about conservatives. It's the "smug wealthy liberal" racism. White liberals are white first. White gay people are white first. White trans people are white first. I'm always disappointed in this fact but never surprised. I'm not immune but I still don't get why people actively engage in this kind collective oppression of others -- white people against Black people and others, straight people against gay people, cis people against trans people. So as far as collective identity goes, it makes sense to stand together to resist that but it doesn't make sense to do harm to other people. How would it benefit me to attack other people? Why would I think I have more in common with the multi-millionaires who live in big houses in these sterile "safe" neighborhoods because they're white than the regular working-class and underclass people of all races? I see people do it. I just don't really understand why they do.

I don't know about the liberal racism a lot, but people in my family who were racist are the ones that are lonely and abandoned by their family. Maybe the idea of “us” against “them” is comforting to white people?

Hey, guess I just wanted to opine that I think it very much does help them, which (as far as I can tell) is why they (we?) do it. And it helps them both personally/internally - so they don't have to confront their own cognitive dissonance or bias - and systemically - wherein they maintain the advantage afforded to them by their privileged class through the maintenance of arbitrary strata. Which isn't to say it doesn't also hurt them, and others. Or that it's a morally neutral stance because it's rooting in, presumptively, pretty basal cognitive biases we build to protect our noggins. I think it's reasonable to say, though, that it's an understandable response even if it's a shitty one. Not sure if your question was rhetorical, I realize after typing this, but here we are, lol. Happy to hear other thoughts and opinions, too 🤷‍♀️

You gotta love JD's logic. "People tell me these things, and I haven't seen any evidence they're lying, so they must be telling me the truth." Like, no. That kind of thinking is what keeps getting society into messes like these. That's literally the opposite of how critical thinking works.

I am so glad you have pointed out stochastic terrorism. I didn't know there was a specific saying for it but it is so, so important to acknowledge how using harmful rhetoric is causing people to go out and do horrible things, even if it isn't indirect words. It is always so frustrating how people like Matt Walsh will deflect blame by saying they didn't directly tell people to hurt or kill anyone, when it is the toxic atmosphere people like him create

My theory about why that idea terrifies some people so much is simply that deep down they know racism and discrimination still exists even if they refuse to acknowledge it, and they fear becoming the minority will mean that racism and discrimination is instead aimed towards them and assume that previously marginalized groups will want revenge against white people as a whole and be in a position to get it.

@@Thed538dhsk I mean you're just playing silly games of semantics when you know full well the point I am trying to make - but I am also fairly certain that you're wrong and that white people make up more than half the population in the US. From what I can find on google it was 61.6% according to the 2020 census and like a bit over 70% for mixed race with white being one of those races.
