I was supposed to shoot a little intro for this video running through the stats of each bottle but I ran out of time due to nasal surgery I had last week. But here are the stats. Both whiskies are from the same distillery but one is 31 years old and the other 12. Also one is an independent bottling (Hunter Laing) and the other is an official bottling. Old/Expensive: Glen Garioch 31-year-old Independent Bottler - Hunter Laing Old & Rare Range 49.1% abv (Cask Strength) $800 NZD vs Young/Cheap(ish) Glen Garioch 12-year-old Official Distillery Bottling 48% abv $75 NZD Thanks for watching! Should I do more collabs? Did you guys like this one?

@%98%82hannel/UCS3u8QLvOgUBhluiLOQUHbg It is so easy to presume that old and young differences as superior/inferior etc. But when side by siding like this is when you truly really taste/smell the differences 'live' as you do it. our memories can fail us so remembering a dram you tried a while ago can fool your memories.

Fabulous collab video!! A couple of years into scotch I tend to buy more expensive expressions but not because of cost - it's all about what I research and decide to purchase. Sometimes I get an expression that is extremely reasonable and it's amazing. I rarely just grab something off the shelf. I tend to do a lot of work before purchasing and especially so these days with whisky prices rising astronomically - as least they are in Canada. Cheers!

oh wow. OLD whisky having a more cohesive, more difficult to separate, cohesive flavor profile, this is the first time I've heard anyone comment on such a thing. Is that very typical, very common? This year, I'm finally on the hunt to acquire a few bottle of OLD whisky, though the bottles will be in the 24yr old range and prices will be have to stay under $300 US for me. So for me, this episode was absolutely riveting.

Yeah exactly. If I want a bold smoky 'punch-you-in-the-face' dram, I lean towards something younger. Whereas something with more layers with each sip - I go for older. It's all time and place.

Im glad he said at the end that older is not better. If older means better then why does Jim Murray regularly rank whiskies that are less than ten years old over whiskies that are over 30 years old. I think we can all agree Jim Murray is one of the best whiskey experts. Older whiskies might be on average better. But if we take some of the rankings of Jim Murray - he gives a Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey - six years - 97.5 points, but he gives Sazerac Rye 18 year - 97 points. He gives Ardbeg ten year old 97 points but he gives Benromach thirty nine year old only 94 points. The BenRiach 12 year is 95.5 points but the BenRiach 35 year is only 90 points. And on and on and on...

Octomore is typically only 5 years old and I can honestly say it's one of the best I ever had. Also Taiwanese and Indian whiskey is usually pretty young, but matures much faster due to climate. So age is just a gimmick. Since taste is subjective, there's no actual way to know.

So this video's title should be like "is older better?" Because the more expensive one was standing on a +30 yo, hard to get distilery expression - so price tag was not the only variable. It would also be more fare if the younger one was from the same distilery in order to isolate the age variable. Other than that was a great vídeo about a great topic.. Missed the "beauty" in the end also, I think.. Lol cheers!
@bene7013

They both was from the same distillery, you can read it from the bottles, I think the older one was just sourced.

@@bene7013 thanks for the heads up! I was multi tasking and did not read the older botle. I take back my statment! Still if the older botle is not an oficial botling from the distilery there may be some profile differences and also the sherry difference on the newer one. (Maybe a glenfarclas 12 vs 30 yo would be a more precise comparation and cheaper lol) Still.. It is then a very fare comparation. Thanks again. Cheers!

Thanks Daslo. Thanks for your comment and shows why I shouldn't of skipped out on doing an intro. Ben is right - both bottles are from the same distillery. Here's the stats: Old/Expensive: Glen Garioch 31year old Independent Bottler - Hunter Laing Old & Rare Range 49.1% abv (Cask Strength) vs Young/Cheap(ish) Glen Garioch 12 year old Official Distillery Bottling 48% abv

@@FirstPhilWhisky this stats are incredible! The ABV when the spirit goes to the barrel is between 55-65 depending on the falvours that the distilers want to take of the wood (Still It as a great video on this) and 31 years later the abv doesn't reach even 50%.. Thats a lot of angel share!! Cheers! Love from Portugal!
