Let’s avoid these ginormous and complex psychological diagnosis: he’s an utter piece of shit and does not care about the harm he’s put on another human, but not caring about something like that doesn’t automatically make you a socio/psychopath. As a teacher, I deal every day with kids making mistakes. That's part of growing up, and most are tiny, inconsequential mistakes but some are big ones. What you see though, is that some kids recognise that they have not only made a mistake but caused harm, and make a genuine effort to make amends. As an athlete of sufficient calibre to reach the highest levels, that would have been easy: going around local junior teams and youth groups to talk about the harm bullying causes and using his own mistakes to show how to make amends and become a better person. Volunteering with charities that support kids' mental health, anti-racism activities and people with learning disabilities. Actually apologising to the victim. For people who actually care about what they have done, there is so much they can do to show they realise the harm they did, and frankly there are so many people who will support them in doing that. To not do so tells its own story.

Teenagers can be mean at times and make mistakes, but to consistently degrade someone for years, someone who is vulnerable on top of it.....that takes a special kind of cruelty. We have all made and are making now, repeated mistakes, maybe not to the levels Mitchell did, but someone somewhere thinks we are a jerk and abusive. As a Bruins fan I was incredibly disappointed to see the signing go down. Regardless of the “big bad bruins” on ice reputation, I truly believe they are an organization that stands for what is right, and as a local, I see the good they do in the community. I was proud though to see the reaction from players and fans immediately following showing we don’t stand for that behavior now or ever. I believe in second chances, but you have to show you are making an effort to atone for your mistakes, and in my opinion, Mitchell hasn’t done that. All the moves he has made have been when his hand was forced, not because he has ever shown any true remorse. I’m glad we severed ties with him, but wish we never created them in the first place.

For those who don't know, Mitchell bullied Isiah from kindergarten all the way to 8-10th grade according to his mother. I've researched this situation as much as I possibly could and found that those 25 hours of community service is all Miller has gone through as far as attempting to rectify his mistakes or make changes in his life. He apologized to Isiah twice, once before he learned he would be drafted and again one week before signing with Boston, neither face to face (social media apparently). There are people out there who say he served his time, and no, he hasn't. During the time he hasn't been able to sign to a professional team he's still been able to play in top level propsect orginaztions and get opportunities in hockey programs other kids with much more character didn't get off his athleticism alone. Had Miller actually put himself through some programs and any sort of diversity training or personal therapy, apologized to Isiah and his family in a heartfelt way, and really reached out and done the things necessary to work on his character then sure....i'd agree anyone deserves a second chance but he hasn't done those things. Not to mention to be properly signed these teams needs to consult Isiah's family and the NHL and properly do it. I do know Boston actually did let the league know (as they had to approve his contract) so i'm not exactly sure why Bettman said they didn't. But not consulting with Isiah's family was just wrong. Every time this news pops up he has to relive the things he went through with Miller and feel like the world only cares about Miller and his talent and not Isiah and his humanity. Miller needs to recognize if he wants to be a pro, he needs to really go out and work on himself and put himself through the things I mentioned in the upper part of this comment and bring his genuine apology to Isiah at a time when hockey isn't on the line for him. I knew immediately he wouldn't last here because walking into that locker room on a professional level you need to be checking all the boxes of a good teammate and person in order to really fit in and mix with your team. Any competitive hockey player will tell you that especially on that level if you're of miserable character and a pariah in the locker room and/or a hard guy to coach you won't make it no matter how talented you are. I can only imagine what would happen to him right now in front of pro arena crowds and out on the ice, let alone in the locker room. Hopefully he truly works on himself, and best wishes to Isiah and his family. Shout out Rob too.

Beautifully articulated bro, I full-heartedly agree. People who say that not allowing him in the league is proof that people don’t believe in second chances or that he’s being blackballed and losing his career is not true in the absolute slightest, let’s not pretend that all his future endeavours and career opportunities are completely thrown out the window because he can’t skate on the same ice as Austin Matthews. When you prioritize giving someone who ruined another persons life for several years consistently the benefit of the doubt over the well-being and humanity of the victim in the situation, it really shows where your priorities are and how you view discrimination as a whole. Losing the privilege of potentially making millions of dollars playing in the best hockey league in the world is not ruining his life or his career, it’s called accountability

I played hockey the dressing room is important you don't want a toxic character in the room, on the ice he would be a massive target, the road to redemption for him is possible but he will have to work his ass off, he will have to prove to everyone I'm changed I understand my mistakes etc so for now he is banned , the ball is in his court to man up if he wants his hockey career back he has to work ass off for it , if can do those things then after a review of his efforts then a decision can be considered if he can return to hockey

I have to say that you made a great video. I had a bit of the mentality of “dang, it’s rough that mistake this dude made at 13 ended his entire career even though it was horrendous.” You clearly convinced me that it is warranted because there is nothing that truly proves this man has made the effort to actually grow that would give any credence to my prior thought. Mistakes are acceptable if they are owned, repented, and actively worked to avoid. There is none of that. You show that you’d be willing to accept that case, and your well laid argument is simply “that’s not how it is.” Great content as always, Rob.

Things like that are not mistakes, including at that age. That sort of behaviour is a reflection on a person’s character, especially when sustained over a long period of time. Apart from him not deserving a break, it should send a message to all the bullies that they will not get a free ticket when they grow up just by saying they were young and made a ‘mistake’ while their victims live with the effects of bullying for the rest of their lives.
@jasonschwartz9481
@jasonschwartz9481 Жыл бұрын
@@JN-wr9he I disagree that the act alone necessary defines the person's character. A lot of bullies are children that are being abused or have suffered a ton of trauma. However, the point about it being over a period of time, mixed with no presentable action that he's changed and done anything for others, definitely points to his character. But, I don't think the act alone, at that age, is always a sign of the character of the man, or woman, they become.

The Isiah's own statement about the situation: "I am Isaiah Meyer-Crothers. I would like to make a statement. I have been bullied since I was in 1st grade. There were not many Black kids at my school. I was called 'brownie' and 'n-----.' Kids said my Black mom and dad didn't love me and that's why I have white parents. Mitchell used to ask me to sit with him on the bus and then he and his friends would punch me in the head. This happened my whole time at school. When I went to Junior High Mitchell would spit in my face and call me a N word. I stopped telling because they called me a snitch and I would get made fun of. I had to say I was 'his n-----' to sit at his table and he made me clean the whole table. He threw food at my face. I was called 'n-----' every day. The office would tell me to stay away from him because he wasn't my friend. Once he got expelled from school, his friends started bullying me. He pretended to be my friend and made me do things I didn't want to do. In junior high, I got beat up by him. Everyone thought he was cool, but I don't see how someone can be cool when you pick on someone and bully someone your entire life. Middle of October, I was being texted constantly everyday and till I answered a Snapchat and IG message from Mitchell Miller. He asked me why I always have my parents doing stuff for me and why I can't speak for myself. I told him I don't care what my parents say I'm old enough to speak for myself. He told me he was sorry and [that the apology] didn't involve hockey. He told me he was doing stuff in the community and helping the youth and he wanted to be my friend. I told him, 'That's cool but where is the proof though?' He didn't give me any [proof]. All the lies I have been told from him for so many years I don't believe what Mitchell told me. He kept asking me to be his friend and that he has changed over the years from what he did. I told him, 'I'm not just gonna be your friend after all you did to me.' I am now getting messages on social media from people calling me 'a slow, retarded assclown' and 'you stupid n-----,' saying that 'I need help.' Mitchell isn't my friend. It hurts my heart what he did to me. So I just wanted to tell everyone -- when Mitchell says we're friends it isn't true. I can't take more of this.

That’s why they shipped Seguin out after all. I think what this kid did is horrendous, truly. Nobody of character would ever victimize another person in that way.

Well he scored almost 40 goals last year as a Defenseman. There is a reason Boston made this attempt to sign him. I want to fight for his second chance, but with Miller either not doing the work needed in the last few years, or lack of the reporting of that work in the last few years, its simply not defensible. @@dereklasker5350 I do agree that Logan has shown real remorse for his actions which boosts his case for forgiveness in the public's eye. Though I disagree with your take on his accomplishments at the level he's at. Good players are expected to put up those numbers in a minor league setting in which players suit up until 20. I wouldn't say Miller's a 1st round talent, on the ice he's no scrub, it's off the ice where he's clearly shown a despicable behavior. Again I'm wondering how much off ice counselling has Miller gone through? Any thing of note in the community? If the answer is no to those questions then truly he deserves all the backlash he's getting. But if he has let's hear about it and then decide. It's a terrible story for the young man that was tormented by Miller and his group of friends for years. Kids can be brutal but what they did took it in truly vile direction. Having been bullied I do understand the long term effects that can last a lifetime. The whole situation has been mishandled since the 2020 draft. After Arizona renounced his draft rights the NHL should have set the guidelines for Miller to be reinstated. This is a solid video. Wanted to add to it with my own thoughts: First, for people who are hockey fans, saw this video, and finally learned more of the truth about what Miller did, that's awesome. I'm glad there are still people in the world who can take on new information and re-assess their opinion of the situation. What I hope you learn most though is to start questioning your current set of hockey news sources, particularly if this is the first you've heard extra detail on the situation. There were plenty of sources/people that were accurately recounting these details. It happened the first time when he was drafted, and it happened again most recently. If the places you usually rely on for news failed to ever bring these details up, then they cannot be considered trustworthy. Moving on from that, a lot of what really sucked in this conversation was how often it was referred to as "a mistake" and "an incident." Notice how singular those terms are. This was abuse that Isaiah endured for years. So anytime Miller, Chayka, or Neely refer to it as such, its important to immediately register that they are lying and trying to bury as much as possible what actually took place. Its sooooo much more than a single incident. Imagine a scenario where a domestic abuser tries to apologize for just one single incident, instead of the many years of what they did wrong. We wouldn't accept that. Parallel to this is the idea of "He deserves a second chance!" Sorry, that's total garbage for so many reasons. This video accurately covers that you have to have shown you earned it the second chance, that you've grown, and in this instance, that you've at least meaningfully apologized to your victim. But there's another way in which this is so wrong, in that this wouldn't be his second chance. Miller is on his millionth chance at this point. Every day he saw Isaiah at school was a new chance for him to realize his wrongs and stop; every day Miller continued to repeat his "singular mistake." And it shouldn't have taken a statement from Isaiah directly, but that becomes even more evident when he talks about how Miller routinely manipulated him into making him think they were friends, only to abuse him again and again. And even with the lack of apology, Miller has has every opportunity to try and do something but never has. He is WAY beyond a 'second' chance now. One minor detail I THINK this video gets wrong is when it talks about NHL teams passing on him without knowing the full details. I don't think that information was ever considered 'private' prior. I'm pretty sure it was all available on public record. I'd suspect it was pretty easy to look up what actually happened and know about all these details before hand. This is just a minor point, and its possible I'm the one actually wrong here, but thought I'd bring that up. Also, there are some extra details that make Miller look even worse: After receiving backlash from the masses, Miller's agent tried to spin some PR. It highlighted initiatives he has taken over the last 6 years and will continue to do moving forward. The problem? It tried to pass off his state mandated community service as genuine volunteer work he took up all on his own. That accounted for just about all the work he had done so far. Then regarding initiative he was recently going to be taking on? Also a lie. There was at least one place that said they received an application from him to volunteer there, but he was not necessarily accepted. Generally, people who want to show they have grown and taken steps to improve, don't need to lie about their entire resume on what they have done and what they will be doing. Another note on this 'growth' thing. We've seen idiots like Chayka and Neely get in on this game. "We hope he will use this opportunity to speak out against bullying." Nope. That's not how this works. You don't get to just get loaded up with a super successful career while you simultaneously grow. You don't get to turn the things you did into abusing a kid into a profitable success story. That only makes it worse. Do not forgive the Bruins. Remember that. If they continue to win, people will try to put this story in the rearview mirror. Its important that we remember THIS is the true nature of that front office, and its disgusting. At least with the Coyotes, you could squint and be like, "Ok, maybe they overlooked on some due diligence." But when it was Boston's turn, there were no excuses left. All these details coming out now are the same details that came out back then. Nothing had changed. Boston KNEW the history of this piece of garbage, and they signed him anyway. And importantly, I don't say the above as a Montreal Canadiens fan or anything dumb like that. (I actually no longer support a team, as I dropped my lifelong team, the Hawks, after all their recent scandals.) I say it as someone who wants to be a fan of a sport & league that needs to reclaim its culture back. There have been way too many stories of teams and organizations (Hockey Canada, as this vid brought up getting caught with all their secret payoff funds) that are getting away with abhorrent behavior. We need to start making these teams actually pay a price and make serious changes. Winning a few games and being good at hockey shouldn't persuade us to let them off the hook.

I think it's easy to see the difference between his case and Logan Mailloux. Unlike Miller, Mailloux has never held back on the crime he did and recognized its severity before the draft, asking not to be picked because he believed he didn't deserve it, unlike Miller who downplayed the severity of his actions. He didn't wait until he was caught and went ahead of the news to come clean, and has shown immense remorse towards the situation. He clearly names what he did wrong, why it was wrong, and understands the lasting impact it will have on his victim. And as severe as his situation was: we are indeed talking about a sexual crime and I do not want to minimize it, he did not show a pattern of misbehaviour. Miller was a toxic and manipulative presence for several years towards his victim and never showed remorse for his actions towards him, only from how it affects him and his ability to play in the big league. Mailloux wants to do the right thing. Miller only cares about playing in the NHL.

I just can’t understand how people can try to defend Miller with comments like “he was just a kid” or “he made a mistake”. It wasn’t one mistake, it was a repeated pattern of abuse and racism over several years with no empathy or remorse ever being shown afterwards and the only thing he’s ever done since then was court-ordered corrections and fake apologies (to the NHL teams before his actual victim) because he didn’t want it to affect his NHL career. We were all teenagers at one point but normal teenagers don’t show extreme racism or sociopathic tendencies. What he did and continues to do goes way beyond simply being immature or a “mistake”.

Thank you for digging into this story, and lucky for me to see it by chance. You brought solid context to the story so precisely. I was bullied for a few years in primary school, and was a hockey player. I'm willing to bet Brad Marchand was also bullied starting out in life. Proud of the Boston room for speaking out. As Kypreos paraphrased about the Bruins room, 'You want culture? We're the culture'. (and we don't approve). The kid in my opinion will never play in the NHL. He's a cruel person without remorse. It's a dyed in the wool character flaw. He has nororiously become a hockey poster boy for bad character, a guy we don't want on the team. He will go on to play in another league, and be rewarded for his ability. Russia would be perfect for him. Maybe he could advocate for Brittney Griner to help balance his karma.

I had to reread the part about how Miller would make Meyers-Crothers say he was Miller’s n[][][][][]. I could not believe what I was reading. It’s discussing. Before I knew these details I thought perhaps with time he can play in the NHL one day when he matures. But he’s been lying the entire time, until this point, and he’s a man now, he’s not changing and I don’t see him doing enough to play in the show or earn the right to play in show. This might be the GREATEST case of Karma I've ever heard about?? Imagine being born with that rare phyical GIFT... of being able to play a Professional SPORT for a living and potentially make Millions doing so, only to not be able to be signed by any single Team... because you are the Ultimate Racist Bully??? Personally, I think if this transpired exactly like it did 20 years ago, he's likely already a millionaire and well on his way to a GREAT life. BUT.... it's not 20 years ago, it's 2022 and Bullying is finally being treated like the spineless cowardly act it is. I can fully imagine that this Miller guy NEVER in a million years thought that his constant, endless meanspirited and racist bullying of Isaiah would cost him his Dream career as a Professional Athlete. Let's be honest here, if you are one of the Lucky few that is blessed with exceptional talent in ANY sport, to the degree that you can literally become a millionaire because of it... it's like winning the Lottery. Better actually, because you get to PLAY a sport for a living, nothing can be better then that especially for a young teen. And this Asshat Neanderthal threw it all away because of his Relentless Bullying of another mentally challenged classmate. Totally GUTLESS. And lastly, IF he had ANY AMOUNT of actual remorse... he would've made it his mission to not only apologize to the victim in person, but do everything in his power to educate other young teens on the negative effects of Bullying others. I believe had he BEEN remorseful, this would've been a natural progression and this particular story could've ended quite different? In the end, this is nothing but Karma at her best....

As for Miller, I agree this isn't a case of "cancel culture," it's mostly about someone who was only sorry he was caught. Contrition is a precursor to giving someone a second chance. As the father of a son that had to deal with two years' worth of locker room bullying and poison on his high school varsity hockey team, this story really hit home. Thankfully, my son didn't have to deal with the degree of terror that it seems Miller handed out, but as a parent it was hard to see our fourth-line son often come out of the rink after practices bordering on tears and then tell of the latest treatment he had been subjected to. During his time playing youth hockey, he had many great team experiences. It can be such a positive experience for kids, but unfortunately youth team sports too often attract kids that like to turn these fun times into nightmares for their personal pleasure or power over others. It's poison that impacts the team on and off the ice and too often coaches don't even see it. In my son's case, it resulted in him walking away from the team. It blind-sided his coach, who had wanted him to be one of the core players his Senior year. But he decided "Why do I want to spend time with a bunch of people that I don't respect or like the way they treat others?"

He should provide his victim with a significant reparation payment, perhaps indexed to salary. 3) Rehabilitation - Needs to be proven. Counseling. Lifestyle changes. New friends. Charity work. In my humble opinion, Miller only gets his second chance if Isaiah Meyer-Crothers truly accepts his apology. Miller made the decision to make Isaiah's life a living nightmare. I don't care if Miller was 14...he was old enough to know what he was doing was wrong. The "he was just a kid" excuse is for Miller's apologists. While the physical pain may have healed, the emotional scars Isaiah has to live with for the rest of his life run deep and I'm not sure how Miller can ever atone for his actions. However, it can be done if Miller wants to badly enough, and has sincerely changed. If Isaiah is able to forgive Miller, maybe the rest of the hockey community can too. Sometimes, you just can't escape from the sins of your past.

Apologizing to NHL teams shows that he is NOT remorseful. He is obviously doing it in hopes of being allowed to play in the NHL, or the league would have no relevance. If he were remorseful, he would make an emotional, in-person apology to the victim AND accept the consequences of his actions, to never play in the NHL.

What Miller did was not bullying, it's criminal, battery... etc. If the NHL starts to cut players who were bullies, then the NHL would cease to exist. I'd say 80% of NHLers were bullies in HS, I directly and indirectly know about a dozen NHLer, mostly retired, in adult life due to business associations. Their attitute in life pretty much reflects who they were growing up. And honestly we can't blame them. They were trained their entire life to be aggressive, be physical, check their way to get their position.... and as in life, all of them were extremely entitled, snubby, bully their way into deals that weren't theirs. This is especially true for mostly Canadians, the Europeans were better in terms of more respectful and less entitled.

I find it so disgusting that a person's life can be completely ruined by a stupid action when they were a kid. Society has become so hung up on digging into the past. Stop judging everyone by who they were, and start looking at who they ARE today. If the victim in this case has the mentality that he has been portrayed to have, then an apology at this point isn't going to have the effect that some might hope. I was bullied all through high school, but that's water under the bridge now. It builds character and makes you into a more solid and compationate person at the end of the day. People need to stop living in the past and move on. If he is currently convicted of something, then cut ties. Otherwise, learn to forgive people for their past indiscretions and move on with life.

That’s where they are lying cause if Miller played ball and gave an apology to the family, had a press conference and apologize, those same people would say he’s just doing it to get into the NHL. My whole point is this holier than thou attitude many have towards athletes is so hypocritical. Sports promotes drinking, promotes gambling, and god knows what these guys do on road trips. But that’s ok if they cheat on their wife or drink and drive, but this kid has to pay the rest of his life for being an idiot as a teenager. Sports is entertainment just like a concert, or movie, tv show. Most of these celebrities are not saints but they provide a value of entertainment to the average person.
