Excellent presentation, thank you. Most people don't understand the G series. These that they seek to "upgrade" (so go for example from some form of 2860 to a G25-550) don't understand that if their engine is not able to get more boost AND be able to keep this boost up to the rpm as before this "upgrade" doesn't make any sense. The ones that they are downsizing don't understand that they need a much bigger housing than before and even with the bigger housing the boost may drop off faster than before. In both cases don't understand that if you simply do a swap without alter/upgrade the supporting mods, the danger of overheating is nearby. all this is partly fault of Garrett that they present it as the next best thing and not what they really are but mostly is ingorance of the tuners that they work on the same basic turbochargers for decades so the various versions of 2860s or from T3/T4s to the various GT/GTX3076s and they don't understand the engineering theory (the fluid mechanics) of turbochargers.
@StavTech3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree totally. A lot of the misunderstanding is because of Garrett selling and promoting them the way they did, which is kinda understandable as it did get sales, but because of the sales speak a lot of people did/do believe they’re magic and end up with a disappointing result. People find it hard to understand that there’s no magic, physics is physics, but hopefully enough people see this vid and do realise!

@@StavTech Exactly. If Garrett would had named the G25-660 for example GTR2867 and specify that these series of turbochargers are aimed mainly at the high-end of the tuning market or for racing applications it would had been much better. I appreciate the fact that you are brutally honest.

They are great turbos, far better than the ancient tech Garrett was using until the G-Series. Part of why nobody can make 660HP on a G25-660 is because the horsepower number is overrated. Generally max is about 10% lower than the claimed number for any G-Series. It's in the compressor maps. In general, the Borg Warner EFR is superior and can also be had cheaper with more included features. Plus it will meet or exceed its horsepower claims. That's my key issue with the G-Series. It doesn't really make sense over the EFR except to have the name. Many of the BW Airwerks turbos actually have compressor maps comparable to G-Series for 1/3-1/4 the price, which also makes the Garretts a hard sell. I'd say they are easily the second best aftermarket performance turbo in terms of pure performance though, from everything I've seen.

The turbine doesn't flow 600hp, it flows less than half of that. At that power, most of the exhaust gas will bypass it through the wastegate. The turbine flows a maximum of about 240hp. G30 about 300hp, G35 bout 350hp etc at their largest AR. It is the compressor on the G25-660 that flows about 600hp, not the turbine.

So in my vehicle I'm gonna have, short term, a Mazda Duratec 2.3-2.5 4-cylinder, and long term, either a 2.7 Ecoboost V6, or a Honda J-series. I... Don't really want to have to save up to buy either two different turbos or an additional turbo in the future if/when I go to the V6, so my question for you is: What should I pick that'll give decent spool and top end on the Duratec, but not be choked on the EB or J-series V6? Short term goal power is 330 lb-ft brake (max my stock trans can take), and I don't care to rev past 7000 (max the gauge goes up to). I want like 5 pounds of boost around 2500 RPM since 2000-3000 is my cruising RPM. Long term goal, I don't really care for more than 700 wheel tops, with the same drivability goals in the cruising RPM range. I have a feeling you might just say "buy once cry once" and do my long term goal and swap now... IDK. *EDIT for notes:* 9:15 Compressor Inducer/Turbine Exducer are the important measurements for ballparking turbo size. And I'm gonna go ahead and extrapolate that it's about 1mm/lb of flow, and 10hp per lb per mm that you'll generally get, barring stuff like Garrett's extreme efficiency design. I don't have any "extrapolation" for the turbine side, yet, though. Need to learn more, first.

i thinking of G25-660 Turbo 0,72 on a volvo 2,5L 4 cyl 16v turbo over garrett 3071R. do i do the right thing then? /joans
@StavTech Жыл бұрын
I think personally on a 2.5 I would go for the bigger turbine housing. Or a G30-660 with a smaller housing.

fantastic video.. lots of good info these are confusing still lol any sizing help with the 660's for a 2.0 k20 series I don't want to spend all the $ for the wrong set up .72 or .92 got all my internal parts now looking for the turbo for around 550 bhp

550 with the smallest turbine housing would be plenty for that

So if im running a k24 honda engine, a 2.4liter 4 cylinder and im looking for 500ish BHP would the G25-660 .72ar good? Looking for responsiveness over anything .
@StavTech3 жыл бұрын
IMO, unlesss you don’t mean the 160bhp versions of the K24 no. Too small for the ones that are ~200 stock. They like to rev. A small turbo wanting to make all the grunt at low rpm fighting an engine that likes to make power up top is literally a backwardsland combo. Worst of both worlds. Bearing in mind you can run a turbo the size of the moon and still get far more power even at 3k than you do n/a on a K20A2/A3. And if you really want massive power before you even reach the stock vtec engagement point, you’ve bought the wrong kind of engine IMO. I’d run the .92 housing bare min
@thangcacdi3 жыл бұрын
Stav-Tech Stav-Tech yeah im talking about the high compression one with 200hp. I see what youre saying, so then if i size up to the G30-660 or 770 with a .92ar would that be better for responsiveness without getting choked up top?
@StavTech3 жыл бұрын
@@thangcacdi as I say in the video, the biggest 25 660 turbine housing only flows roughly what the smallest GT35 one does. So that’s bare min I’d want on a K24, and that would still be full boost long before the engine gets in to its natural powerband. Would be a hell of a powerband, but I think I’d still prefer a G30 size turbine wheel on a K24
@thangcacdi3 жыл бұрын
Stav-Tech great! Thanks much for the advice. I will be going G30-660 .92ar then. I don’t plan on making anymore than 600crank hp. Im looking for 500wheel hp. It’ll be going into my MR2. Now i just need to find a top mount manifold.

Best spool turbo for a focus rs mk1 2.0 zt engine to hit 430bhp?? Im on a gtx2867 and hits 390 bhp

A G25 550 is probably the one if you can justify the price. A 2867 should easily be able to make that number if you turn it up though

Now my family clearly were'nt too imaginative on the name front as my father is also named William Henry Brockbank IV as was his father III, his fathers father II, and his fathers father father I. Makes me the 5th of the dynisty = 5 Add Badger to the 5 you get Badger5. means nothing really, but kind of does to me.

You are not getting over 500bhp from a G25-550, they simply do not flow that much. Garrett have been lying since their Section 11 a few years ago. Honeywell are no longer affiliated and their products are not what they used to be back in the GT days when Honeywell engineers were the minds responsible. They expose themselves in their own compressor maps.

No it doesn’t. What goes in has to come out and most people’s biggest mistake is they have all the compressor and no turbine flow.
