Did the same but i had a Yamaha Chappy 50cc 3speed from1982 bought for 50$ and sold for 450$. I was 12 when i rebuilt that thing, without Internet or any adult that could help me. It was in bad shape, it was really nice when it was put back. i remove engine and toke it apart completely and the rest of the whole bike. Yamaha Chappy was around same size as Monkey Z50. But Yamaha chappy had 2stroke. Little easier to work on. At 13 i started to drive around on the streets with it. sold it 2yrs later when i was 15yrs old. At 15 here in Sweden i was allowed to drive moped's. But at 15 i was bored of moped's. So i got a Yamaha YZ80cc around 1992 for 100$ i rebuilt, It was Air cooled YZ80cc from 1980. That engine was similar to yamaha DT50 Moped. I used YZ80 as a moped on the streets. because Police had no chance to get me on that, It was quick. Love that YZ80. And i had Uniden handheld police scanner in my plugged in to my ears when i drove around on that :). I heard everything from Police. Good old times. It was so fun back then. Try things out by yourself. Nowadays people just go to internet and get guides and tips from others, and everything are served on a plate.

Cool model. Owned a new 1990 model back in the early 90's, it was black with red wheels and most of the frame. It did not have any speed warning light only the neutral one, chrome fuel tank cap, a back and forwards tilting handlebar and not this older style one, and a different tailight, and same 4 speed. Just adding at one time a 16mm carburator with inlet and small mofication to the exhaust, gave it's lots more power and it could do easily 65 Kmh. There were already back then btw also 70 and 85cc kits amo for these engines. Check out also btw the Suzuki PV 50, owned one of those also back in the 90's, i believe they were made between 1981 - 2002-??, they could also be had with 5 speed and 60 - 70 - 80cc kits.

I had chance to ride a Honda Monkey in 1975, they were very popular in Finland. They went away in 1980s. Suzuki and European moped manufacturers brought out their own versions of Monkey. Finnish kids would illegally modify mopeds. That they were fast motorcycles. Easily go over 50-60 and faster mph. When mopeds were made to 20mph.

The real competition was with Honda and the 2stroke Suzuki PV50. These things, at least in our little Finland flooded the roads NOT SO LONG AGO 😂 You were able to start driving them legally at 15y without any schooling etc, and we did everything to them 💯 It actually feels quite crazy driving these well over 100km/h. Back in the early 80's Yamaha had a line of cruiser styled bike with a black and gold styling called midnight specials. They even had a 50cc two stroke version. For some reason young Detroit city gang members took a liking to them. One of the most amusing spectacles that i have ever seen while on two wheels is seeing a large group of those guys riding down Woodward Avenue running every red light in the middle of the night while wearing their helmets strapped but perched completely on top of their heads. Guess that that was their look and they were styling. Being the pecker wood that i was at the time i rode circles around them doing wheelies on my new at the time red and white Honda CB1100F much to their amusement. Sometimes i miss the 80's.

The Honda MiniTrail 50 was automatic but did kind of had a clutch. Three speeds all down but they do not engage until the shifter is let off of. In neutral, push down on the shifter and keep it down, that’s the clutch. Same on 2nd and 3rd as well. I owned one 45 years ago, it was the first major purchase of my life. I could get into the back of moms mercury marquis with the handle bars folded down.

I have a 1970 CT70 (Trail 70) its very similar to the Monkey with the fold down handlebars. My father pulled it out of a dumpster at his auto shop and brought it home. We changed some hoses, cleaned the carb, changed the plug and put gas in it. It fired right uo. It was 20+ yrs old when i got it and that was 30 yrs ago. All ive ever had to do was change oil and plugs and brake pads. The drum brakes suck but man that little thing is fast. Its poop brown and goes slightly over 40mph. 3 speed trans and faster than any souped up Tomos moped i ever had. The thing is ABSOLUTELY BULLETPROOF. Yes its a blast for my niece and nephiews, and me when we're all together!

My brother picked up a CT70 years ago. I remember the head bolts being too loose so we were taking it up and down the street and when youcd put load on the engine the head would lift and extremely loud pops of fire would blast out of the side of the cylinder head! We ripped it up and down the street at dusk and laughed our asses off! 😂 Tightened the bolts down and it was fine for years, I don't even remember changing the headgasket.

@volvo09 That's funny as hell. I have so many memories on mine. Once I went up a really steep hill in the woods, I tried to pick up enough speed and downshift at the top but I didn't make it. The bike never bogged out or anything like a 2stroke I just fell backwards and slid down about 40ft and broke my leg on a tree stump. The bike was packed with mud but it was still running it never even stalled. You could shift that thing into 3rd gear and it would take off like an automatic never have to shift. I gotta find tires for it. I was looking about 10yrs ago and gave up. The drum brakes are shot. But other then that I'm sure it will still fire right up.

Still have my Honda CT trail 90 , bought new in 70. Tool kit , touch up paint owners manual, sale receipt! $280. New out the door ! Little over 3800 miles only thing changed and not original is the back tire! A true go anywhere you want to go and use only a couple drops of gas getting there! Un stoppable machine! As long as as you’re not in a big hurry to get there! Yes , Fear the Honda CT Trail 90 !!!

Heh heh, I do! Even smaller than the Z50 with a 49 cc. pushrod motor and a 2 speed transmission. Sort of designed for the 6 and under group.😉

Honda Dax or CT70 in the US was common. CT90 was more common than the Super Cub / Passport. Honda marketing messed up and sent C70 instead of C90, and both are motorcycles that need licensing. 50cc, less restrictions, 70cc is more trouble than worth. I rebuilt my 1964 Super Cub with a 125cc engine.

In Japan, it is illegal for 50cc bikes to drive over 30km/h and they need to stay in the far left lane at all times. The monkey was famous because they have a plethora of aftermarket parts which was a cheap way to have fun. They have exhausts for it also. A tuned up monkey will reach 50mph. Almost nobody keeps it in it's original form. So it is rare to find something that is all original.
