At the end of the day, Trey didn't really get a lot of chances, but he also didn't really seize the ones he did get. Brock, on the other hand, took his shot and just kept winning game, after game, after game. Declaring for the draft was the best thing Lance ever did. He had a miracle 16-0 season as a freshman QB, won a national championship, had 45 touchdowns to ZERO interceptions, and was seen as one of the most agile and athletic QBs in college football. North Dakota State took a huge nosedive the next year, which he probably saw coming and knew it would hurt his hype. They haven't been nearly as good since and wont be with their new HC. Look at Colt McCoy's story and you'll see he did the opposite; after his miracle season at Texas, McCoy was predicted to be a top 5 draft pick if he declared as a junior and was pleaded to declare, which he didn't. The next year, McCoy's stats declined and he suffered a permanent nerve injury to his throwing arm that plummeted his draft stock. I mean he was ultimately drafted in the late 3rd round but he still lost out on millions. Lance knew, whether he stayed at NDSU or transferred to prove himself at a P5 school, his stock would NEVER be as high as it was after the 2019 season. So he was genius. He jumped a sinking ship and took a $22 million bag. Even if he becomes a bust bigger than Jamarcus Russell or Johnny Football, he'll be richer than had he just played two more years of college ball, took a 3-5th round draft selection for a fraction of the moneys, and ended up a third-stringer anyways.

So at 9:20 why did they draft a qb: Context - Garoppolo was injured a lot and they were limited in what they could do offensively. Jimmy has a quick release but mobility, deep ball outside the numbers, scrambling, and health were all concerns. Also they were paying Jimmy about 30M a year and they could get a franchise qb on a rookie contract that would help get players around him. Hindsight is 20/20: The 2021 class was loaded with qbs and now we are finding out it may have been the weakest in the last 10-15 yrs Trevor had a solid year last year but thru a few games this year doesnt look as transcendent as he was slated as. Mac Jones made the probowl as an alternate but was benched for a guy that the pats cut Fields is awful cant read defenses and Chicago is about to hit the reset button on him. Trey Lance was billed to have a strong arm and be mobile but really never really saw the arm and the mobility thing was weird because he wasnt quick and he couldnt run over people like Cam or Allen so he was just average. He's a good guy but indecisive and inaccurate.

What no one is talking about is, in 2022, the players on the 49ers did not vote for him as a team captain. The question is why? What did they see or better yet not see in him? A captain is supposed to be a team leader and the players did not see him as such. Now let that sink in, the players did not believe a quarterback that by nature is supposed to lead a team, was not a leader. Now look at Purdy, the players love that guy, they have his back, and he was voted one of the team captains. I hope Lance finds success and does well in the league but every year, the draft is a crap shoot and they're more misses then hits.

Great analysis! As a Niners fan who wanted to see Trey succeed (and has watched the Trey haters and Trey Stans tear down the fandom) I think you are spot dead on…up until the Shanahan being better at developing QBs than McCarthy. Shanahan is a better offensive coach than McCarthy, but Shanahan has no track record of successfully grooming a young QB. He didn’t groom Brock, Brock landed NFL ready. He didnt successfully groom Lance, Allen looks pretty bad, Mullens and Bethard weren’t successful, and he exposed RG3 to crazy injuries. To be effective Shanahan’s offensive scheme seems to just need a QB to get the ball out with quick and accurate short throws, and if the QB can’t do that he’s generally done with them.
@PureMagma Жыл бұрын
I agree. Based on results, Shanahan actually *injures QB's* with his play-calling lineups. I heard that the reason Jimmy Garoppolo was sent to a second (out-of-the-way) area to practice during 2022 summer training camp wasn't because he was "rehabilitating his shoulder" so much as they separated him from Trey Lance because he was trying to help Trey improve... and Jimmy was told "How can he be QB1 if he's looking up to you?" and then they moved Garoppolo to a different location where he couldn't influence Trey and the team wasn't pining away for their preferred QB1. The interview Jimmy Garoppolo recently gave to a reporter he carefully implied that the 9ers needed to do more to support the development of their QB's.

I've been a niner fan for 30 years and I remember Mooch saying Giovanni Carmazzi just couldn't handle the NFL stage, and it was just too big for him. That is the same sense I get watching Trey play. He is total deer in headlights and panics the moment he steps back to pass. Brock is so confident out there and smooth in everything he does. It is night and day. Some guys can handle the big stage and others just cannot, and this is so difficult to predict when scouting college QBs. If he got the same amount of snaps as the rest of his draft class then it might be a different narrative around him. He’s got all the talent just needs the on field snaps to continue to develop. In his first couple games played he has better stats TD:INT, comp % and average per pass than Josh Allen’s entire rookie year. That guy turned out pretty good because he got the snaps to work through his issues. Hope the kid balls in Dallas during preseason.

ooops. lol this didn't age well. Lance is an awful QB and won't of the worst draft picks in league history

He didn't play one snap with CMC. Purdy has never played a snap without CMC. It's not everything, but even Jimmy's numbers skyrocketed after the trade to acquire McCaffery.

@@patrickland4367 my thing is the Purdy cult members want people to view him the same way the mahomes, burrow, allen, lamar are viewed BUT without the responsibilities those QBs have. Whenever they lose, it is on them and they have to wear that. But with Brock, when we lose it is always finger pointing & someone else's fault!

Today is the *1* year anniversary of when "The Truth Behind the Tragic Fall of Trey Lance" was uploaded! Trey Lance hasn't played a single down for the Cowboys in the regular season and yet his time with them already seems to be numbered. The Cowboys declined the fifth-year option on his contract this past spring. He should've stayed in college for another year or two. His career in the NFL might be coming to an end *much* sooner than anyone could've expected! 🤓➡️😬

If Dak has to sit out a game or 2 at some point during this 2024 season, the Cowboys are putting Cooper Rush in as QB, not Trey Lance. Lance had the entire off season, training camp, and all of the preseason games to show everyone he is an NFL starter. The Cowboys were still negotiating with Dak on his contract extension at that point and would have loved it if Lance had showed out and given them some leverage against Dak and his agent, but nothing of the sort happened. Remember that Romo was an undrafted free agent when the Cowboys signed him, he was barely hanging onto a roster spot as a 3rd string qb, but he was giving the first team Dallas defense fits when he ran the scout team, plus he moved the offense effectively in preseason starts. Lance flashed zero starting ability. There's no buzz from coaching staff, guys on the team, or media about Lance being something special. He's big, strong armed, and athletic, so the Dak haters in the Cowboys fan base look to him as their savior. Not going to happen.

Experience, experience, experience. That's Trey's problem. Too early and too limited time on the field to call him anything but inexperienced.

Gotta feel bad for Trey Lance. Shoved into a top team looking for a pro while he's still trying to learn and gain experience. He's a good kid but just didn't get lucky. He also didn't do well in the few chances he got due to all the stress and pressures. Purdy is way too superior and it killed lance. Had he been in a mid team he'd have been a Jordan Love types.

As a Niners fan, I can say I hated this deal from the start. He had not played elite defenses. And it showed. I have never seen a bigger "Deer in headlights" in my life. He was simply not able to process the plays fast enough. Thanks for your good content.

The best thing about niners is that they always go for elite QB and somehow they good at it and if someone is not their guy they just let him go quickly wihout being mediocre for couple of seasons.

Crazy stat: Trey Lance in his entire highschool, college, and NFL career hasn't thrown more passes (798) than Tom Brady threw (799) last year at age 45. Brady had 66 more during his last game in the playoffs.

You're the 1st person on KZbin to get it right. Lance was my guy in that draft, but I failed to understand just how much experience Lance needed before he'd be a functional NFL starter. Imo he'll fail to show antything in Dallas as well simply for the same reason he failed in SF. He needs reps and he's unlikely to get them in Dallas due to Dak and Cooper being sooo established in that offense. I don't think trey is likely to have any amount of success in the NFL the longer he stays on successful teams, if that makes sense. He needs to go to a team that can be patient with his growth and no team in contention is going to afford him that opportunity because all those teams have established starters.
