Loving it. Although I lapped up every word of The Jam’s musical output, and Sting’s longevity, diversity and professional output cannot be denied, they exhibited the personality of a brick. Townsend was classed as part of the dinosaur music genre that we were trying to escape. In retrospect, there was only thirteen years between him and Weller, which is nowt really, but his maturity shone, and he came across as battle hardened, travelled, educated man. It cements the ideal that youth is wasted on the young. ...And the wild, manic Toy Dolls kicked it all off. I’d forgotten that. Brilliant!

I was there - this was The Jam's last public performance. Whatta coup for The Tube. I think this is why the band got somuch airtime as the producers knew it was the last Jam appearance

This is great!! How can I not love this debut episode. With live performances from Heaven 17, The Toy Dolls and The Jam. I had albums by all three, being in highschool at the time.

Someone else recently uploaded every episode of The Tube but a couple of months ago they all got deleted. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with this channel because I enjoy watching the episodes.

It's shocking that these videos get taken down by KZbin, when there's no box set of the shows available and therefore no other way to watch them in retrospect.

Seems funny in 2022 to hear someone ask Paul Weller if he's gonna give up music! He's been probably THE MOST steadfast maker of great music in these ensuing decades! But, of course, they didn't know that then!

My best friend at the time bought Set The Tone's album Shiftin' Air Affair on the strength of their appearance on The Tube, and it made the rounds (via cassette) of our respective social circles. Gotta say though that Kenny Hyslop was a bellend at the time!

I remember thinking how great this show was- exciting new and anarchic, it was our generations Ready Steady Go!. Looking back 40 years I really wish I'd kept it as a cherished memory- it is absolute amateurish Poundland shite. A shoe string production, Poor sound, terrible presenters, and lots of mediocre performances but we all loved it back then- we really didn't know any better.

That's because it was better than anything we'd had up to that point. The Tube did go on to showcase many bands which had a large live following, but relatively little in the way of record sales, which did a true service to those of us who were still too young to get into most gigs.

Regardless of all that i think its full of atmosphere and individuality that's not seen on tv today. This show was made before I was born and I think its brilliant. Its got edge to it.

I don’t understand why bands split up when they are successful. The beat surrender was a great track for their last single as the jam which is crazy. I could understand if their music was crap but no it was great. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Paul wanted to move on musically and get into another musical bag. I remember his interviews at the time saying he didn't want people to go, 'Oh they used to be good, but they went downhill'. The Style Council material wouldn't have worked with The Jam. Listen to the last few Jam songs here - they were still angry - while the cover of Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up' and 'War' point his way forward. For Paul, artistic development trumps sales every time - and still does.

Townshend : "A sort of self congratulatory affair" .......I don't mind taking advantage of that though in later years to swamp the U.S. record market with mediocre material , just to conquer that highly profitable market.

Wow, brilliant mate. Did you just put that up? I only found the Tube last night; I watched half, then went to bed. I went back to watch it this afternoon, it had been removed, and it wouldn't even let me winge about it. - Comments rejected. - I tried using other search engines and means, then you pop up. Cool! I'm not very good at maths though. Easy'!
