In my mind, a lot of areas of Africa are comparable to the early Middle Ages in Europe. Some big empires came in, set up their own power structures, and then left. And then there are a whole bunch of people trying to use those power structures. Warlords pop up, conquer these power structures, then get conquered. One different thing I’ve noticed is that a LOT of factions in modern times will put “democracy” in their names. Of course, a military government is inherently undemocratic. It’s pretty similar to enlightened despotism; these factions are (in theory) ruling in the name of the people. Democracy is a marketing tool. I wish the best for the people of Niger. I hope that soon you’ll step out of the shadow of fallen empires, and enjoy peace and prosperity, whatever form that prosperity may take.

Pretty sure those are czech vz 59 machine guns. Also pretty sure those are not FNCs because i don't think the fnc got that bolt release lever on the side but the K1 does. For the machine guns, you can clearly see a belt going into the one up top. The BM59 is the mag fed garand the italians made, no belt on that. Also multiple AKMs, but that's to be expected. Hope my sleep deprived nerd brain could be of assistance

As a Nigerian, let me thank you for your objective coverage of the coup and history of the region. I agree that France deserves harsh criticism for their terrible diplomacy in Africa but I also refuse to support the overthrowing of democracies for military dictatorships because that has never worked for us in Africa. And worse, actually inviting groups like Russian mercenaries is even worse than anything. Already in Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso their coups have resulted in increased socioeconomic hardships and islamic insurgency that also threatens the rest of us in west Africa.

I think the biggest problem in Africa is, post colonization Africa did not have many strong institutions. Not all but on avg. For example. India inherited british institutions, most of them. Pakistan did not, and faced coupes due to a lack of proper structure. Um not saying India or other modern nations did not have their own indegenious institutions in pre colonial times, its just that, imo, unlike India and some other nations, stability was very difficult to achieve. Specially in case of Africa which was devasted from the experience along with the harsh living conditions in and near the sahara belt. But im open for debate, if anyone has any views. Specially @Stakuyi

Africa is still heavily influenced by Europe cuz the whole point of colonization was to drain these countries of natural resources. France has a lot of former colonies in Africa and they depend on the various natural resources. Even though these coups happen, they won't cut off France from the resources cuz the economies dependen on it. Business as usual. It's all about power.

India was more fragmented than former Pakistan (including East Pakistan). It was patchwork many Princely states and former British territory. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel ji United India (notably Portuguese Goa and Nizam Hyderabad were incorporated in Union ). There were no great leaders in Pakistan. Even though Pakistan is Muslim State it discriminates against Non-Punjabis (Muslims and non-Muslims alike) like the Baluchi, Sindhis, Bengalis. They don't even treat Ahamadis fairly. Their Elite can get away by giving religious lolipops to populace. So, Pakistan only indulges in extremism. Their wealth is siphoned by their Military. Institutes are made up of people. India was blessed with selfless leaders during Country formative years.

I've also heard that a lot of african nations put little effort into maintaining the infrastructure they inherited, as limited as it was, allowing the country's practical wealth to deteriorate as they focused on my important things, like defending against an expected coup. As horrible as it is, France probably did these nations a disservice by backing off as quickly as they did. Niger needed decades of transition to help construct a government that could stand on its own. Then again, a decade and a half wasn't enough for the new government of Afghanistan to survive, so maybe even that effort would have been wasted, and only delayed the inevitable decades of suffering.

23:16 I’d heard and don’t know if it’s true, but I’d heard that we use uranium in nuclear power plants because it would allow us (specifically, the United States and presumably the former Soviet Union) to be able to refine uranium for weapons and that uranium isn’t necessarily the best fissile material to use for power plants in either efficiency, or ease of access.
@mechadrake
@mechadrake Жыл бұрын
It was, but now there is only utanium left, as other reactors got reseearch pulled many years ago. Working uranium reactor basically finished only alternative trials of thorium reactor and now everyone is obsessed with fission reactors, with unachievable goals, due to material incompatible conditions (very hight temp and pressure required).
@TophuPaint
@TophuPaint Жыл бұрын
We (USA) used uranium in our plants because it was the easiest material to get our hands on and we were already using it for our nukes. China and India are actually developing Thorium based plants because it's easier for them to get that fissile material. Also, there's not reason you couldn't build nukes with other fissile material. The research just hasn't been done to make it a reality. They've actually made decent progress in fusion this decade. Microsoft currently has a deal with a company to have net positive fusion power from them by 2028. Doesn't mean it will happen, but we've made more progress in the last 10 years than the last 30.

The problem with those coups which are a cultural tradition for African nations is that most of them are entirely corrupted and self serving and only want power and not the good of their countries. This one at least seemed to tackle a huge problem by addressing the influence of french interference in their region and the theft of natural resources their country has through shady deals that got them exploited by France for decades. They got the right idea. Whether or not they'll deliver on their promises is another issue.

Honestly, it seems like corruption and an authoritarian regime would be a safer bet to support than repeated coups (which could risk a civil war, or a war by its neighbors). Stability > Democritization. Any benefits which might be gained by democratizing would immediately be lost by a divided country without a strong sense of respect for rule of law. A people who have not embraced the rule of law cannot be expected to maintain it, even in a democratic society, and they will abandon it quickly for expedience. You cannot establish widespread respect for the rule of law except by custom over many years of sustained rule.

So while I’m ruling it out because competence and good timing are very evidently *not* Russia’s strong suit, I’m leaning fairly heavily against this being a Russian instigated coup. If Russia wanted to strain France’s energy sector, they should have done that over a year ago, maybe even earlier, so as to get France further dependent on the Nordstream pipelines. Then they could have used that leverage during their invasion of Ukraine, “you stay out of this or we turn off Nordstream and you all freeze to death.” I firmly believe this was a major part of their decision to invade Ukraine in the late fall/early winter anyway, as moving troops and materiel in snow and ice is a goddamn hellscape. But, Old Man Winter took a vacation last year and so the EU had a fairly warm and mild winter instead, which took away Russia’s biggest bargaining chip from them providing indirect military assistance.

Cutting off uranium supplies from Niger doesn't seem like it will have that big of an impact. For a start, a nuclear fuel bundle lasts a fairly long time, you don't necessarily need a constant supply especially if you have a modest strategic reserve. So nothing would happen immediately and France would have plenty of time to consider their options. Second there are lots of alternative sources of uranium scattered around the globe, including in other parts of Africa, and you don't need a pipeline or massive LNG tanker to acquire it, the processed ore comes in barrels which can be transported almost like any other heavy metal oxide as it's minimally radioactive in that state. So it would probably be a bit of logistical annoyance for France and would probably mean paying a little more for their uranium, but I seriously doubt it would cause an acute and immediate energy crisis.

A nitpick - Whenever the colonial era is being tackled, the crimes of the colonial powers are described in lurid, obscene detail while the conquests perpetrated by Africans themselves are described in vague, dry, business like language. Oh Usman Dan Fodio just went a-conquering did he? Just went for a jaunt and happened to take over a few kingdoms. As if he wasn't pillaging, raping, lopping off limbs, killing, same as the Europeans. This matters because it contributes to the post colonialism political project which distorts the picture of what actually happened. The picture so many people now have of colonialism is evil Europeans oppressing peaceful people rather than the truth - conquerors conquering other conquerors.

However dictatorships tend to go mad with power, hord the wealth of the people for said dictators and often have very quick actions on stuff they should have thought threw first, this often leads to disaster. Their is also the issue of succession of power, the dictators aren't going to share power, but they aren't immortal and thus needs to have a person to follow them up, sometimes this goes well, and other times the follow up is even more of a tyrant than the originals. Their is also the possibility of the succession being challenged by the military and the nation spiraling into civil war, since in dictatorships might makes right, their is no one else to keep things in check.

@@Hungerperson that's fair, I did give it too much credit, but being an American and having gone to many public schools(family moved slot) it's a bit of a helpful gauge in determining if a video is worth my time.. As I get someone might pronounce something differently, but if you've heard it in college, or on TV... You'd know the pronunciation... (Again from an American) That being said, you're right, it could be a perfect video with amazing content... Just as I've limited time, I use some weird shorthands to help me determine if a video will contain info I'd like to watch This is just one... Not the only one... If I did that with every video, I'd not watch any videos from non Americans, who might not know how to pronounce the word in English, or that it's one of those weird English words that goes with another languages pronunciation, In this case I think it's Spanish, or that's what comes to mind (probably as Spanish is my 2nd ish language) junta also as a Spanish word tells you a lot about what one is.. "together" sort of means it's not just one person, but rather a group Again, just part of my short hand... Much like with if eating chicken is ok, when I don't have a thermometer to check while it's cooking (assuming I could even do that) Though if the chicken is from a good chef Or in this case channel, I'd eat the chicken in trust/watch the video regardless

Duuuuuude.. You've gotta cut these down in length: it's what's killing your views. Nobody wants to watch a 30 minute KZbin video, that's what movies are for. I'm 42 and even I can't watch that much history at once! And I'm a historian! Each episode doesn't need to be the LITERAL HISTORY OF EVERYTHING lol.

Lol, that may have been the case 5 years ago, but ironically, the longer the video, the more views it would get.

He can listen to all of you niche KZbin watchers, or.. deal with facts. Dude is getting K-I-L-L-E-D by the algorithm. Anything under 10k views isn't worth producing. He needs to have money to do this. Y'all ain't helping. BT-Dubz.. SUPER original replies🤣
