Basically he sold his own company to Twitter for several million dollars which he took as a salary instead of a lump sum of cash because he would pay more in taxes that way and he wants to make his country better for everyone. However he is still owed that money so if his employment is ever terminated he is still contractually owed that full amount which is to be given as a severance package. Firing him to save money won't accomplish that goal and the only reason he was fired was because Elon just fired as many people as possible without doing any research.

All he's doing at this point is proving the people at PayPal who knocked his suggestion back right, especially since "X" has never run worse. Musk was so genuinely blinded by rage after the PayPal fiasco that he didn't take the time to do basic research before the brand change.. What I find really funny, is that when he was still in the process of buying Twitter, it was super obvious at one point he realised he was about to make a huge mistake. But by never shutting up on social media, he actively hampered his own chances of pulling back from the deal, cuz the other side was able to additionally argue that he has a history of manipulating markets through his social media posts. He's like a teenager that treats the internet as equal to reality.

In general, layoffs follow mergers because you generally have twice as much staff as you need when you merge two companies. Having two entire accounting departments, when you have one company, doesnt make much sense. And when you make them one department, you're usually left with too many people and not enough jobs. So that usually results in layoffs. But he didn't merge a company with another one, he just took one over and then decided that half needed to go without first knowing anything about it. So he's just a giant idiot.

Something more about Elon's X obsession is it isn't constrained to _just one_ of his children's names, though admittedly that kid is the only one seemingly named after a jet plane. Of his 11 children 4 have names including the letter X, which is a rather high proportion because X isn't all that common a letter, but is only really noteworthy given how much he seems to fixate on the letter X everywhere else. In addition to this, one of his children who came out as trans also had a name beginning with X before their changed it, bringing that count up to 5/11 kids he intended to have an X in the name.

My favourite part of the whole debacle is how it shows that Elon Musk is bad at illegally manipulating the stock market. Prior to his offer to buy Twitter, he'd bought more than 5% of Twitter's stock without disclosing it within 10 days as is law, and that allowed him to buy the stock at an artificially low price. Somehow, he thought the SEC wouldn't notice despite them warning him (at the very least) for similar shit in the past. And that basically forced him to buy it because the SEC would fine him if he didn't, and that fine was higher than what he thought Twitter's worth was. So he offered to buy Twitter for way too much money and they agreed, and their deal included a fine of $1billion if one party backed out. Which was not ideal for Elon considering he'd realised how much less money Twitter was worth, and wanted to back out of the deal, or at the very least, renegotiate. And that's how we got to Elon publicly saying he was backing out because then Twitter's stock price would fall. And it did, but again, this is illegal, and Twitter sued him because of it. This led to him having to buy a site he didn't want for too much money after directly making it worth even less. A great business man.

This is because he had a company that twitter bought, and was employed because the contract for said purchase had that as the main form of payment. By the way the man who was fired and then Elon mocked for having a disability is also someone who chose to work for Twitter when he sold his company to them instead of just taking a single lump sum of cash because he would pay more taxes on a salary and he wants to help make his home country of Iceland better for other people with disabilities. His employment contract makes it clear that if he is ever terminated he is to get all of the money he is owed as a severance bonus. As a result his name is basically at the top of a "Do Not Fire" list. This is why HR was giving him the run around because he had been fired and they didn't want to tell him because then he would be owed several million dollars. This is part of the reason why Musk had to publicly apologize on top of you know, the defamation lawsuit.
