The tunnels built by the Austro-Hungarian army under the peak of Mount Cimone are still partially accessible, despite collapses and obstructive debris. They were connections for machine gun positions and observation posts in a location that both armies considered of utmost importance. The Italians, with the Val Leogra Alpini and the infantrymen of the Novara and Bisagno brigades, captured it on June 23, 1916, in an incredibly daring action (which we will tell you about in a future episode). The Austrians did everything they could to reclaim it, eventually detonating a massive mine that blew up the entire peak of Cimone on September 23 of the same year. Most of the fallen, over 1,000, are now in the shrine. But we will also talk about this in other episodes of the series.
