The Turo Update I DIDN'T Want To Make *A Customer Returned A Car*

I've been buying and renting out cars on Turo for a few weeks, but it's not going as well as I hoped. The short rental periods make for a bunch of work with little profit. Today we're going over the pain points and the earnings, and at the end of the day it's not that bad because it is covering the cars. But my 2011 Dodge Durango that lived a good bit of it's life in Germany was out on a rental and the customer returned it. He said the wheel bearing was going out, so we're going to take try to find the problem. We've looked for this problem before and found no issue, maybe it completely failed in 200 miles.

I would Vacation in Wichita just to rent it 😂 I know you probably already checked it out but just trying to help brainstorm. Have you checked the slide pins? Maybe they didn’t properly lube them. Or maybe the rubber brake line? I have just bought 02 Maxima with the same problem. It was a combo of problems including the rubber line and slide pins and it was super frustrating. Hope you figure it out bro!

@WatchJRGo Just throwing this out there, maybe check the diameter of each tire to make sure they are equal. If the dealer or prior owner replaced one or more for some reason, it will put a constant bind on the AWD which could result in the weird turning issue. It may also cause the transfer case to heat up a lot when driving for a while, so it could get noisier or "sticky" resulting in a shudder or chatter. It may have quieted back down after he limped it back to you and allowed it to cool off. Another thing to check is the differential fluid. If it has posi and got changed or topped off without additive, that could cause issues too.

I hate to say it to you but... That actually does sound like a loose wheel bearing. I had a problem with a car that didn't have it's axle nut fully tightened to torque spec. It made that same sound. In the condition it's in, it's not unsafe yet but, If you change both front wheel bearings, change the tires then give it an alignment, the durango will drive like a fresh champ.

Some turo fleet operator I rented from used *another* company that would unlock the cars remotely. Cars were parked behind a fairly large real estate business in Frisco, TX. I registered with what was essentially that 4th party company, selected a pick up time, dialed in, and vehicle was unlocked. It was a clunky process, not the most streamlined in terms of signing up, but seemed to solve the issue you have of having someone physically present to hand off the vehicle.

This is the second or third time you've mentioned not being able to get home and edit a video. You should start thinking about getting a computer setup at the shop that you can edit on and use the cloud or external hard drive to work off of. USB it's up to 20 GB per second and Thunderbolt is up to 40 GB per second so there should be some drives that or worth using or just sync the files to your home computer while you're driving home.

Turo and Uber/Lyft work great here in my city (New Oreans) TONS and TONS of tourists. I imagine if you got a fleet of mid-sized cars and slingshots you could do really well. I have friends that started doing Uber for a side gig and now its their full time job. One buddy makes $1000 a week in just airport runs. Although the numbers are nowhere near pre-covid yet people still come to the Big Easy in droves. We have 3 cruise ships that park and unload 1500 ppl each and every weekend and they all want a rental. I need to get on this. You are motivating me to give it a shot.

Except Wichita, even though it's grown past a shrinking New Orleans in size, just isn't the same kind of city. We're a big small town. Meaning we have the size to have the nice things, but we can't get our shit together to have the nice things you get in a big town. No apple store, microcenter, cheesecake factory, IKEA, nothing. And that includes having a big enough culture that's willing to Uber and have you make enough to do it full time

When I first started renting out on turo, I didn't put a mileage limit and I quickly realized people were using my car solely for the purpose of not putting so many miles on their own car on long distance trips. So I put a 200 mile per day limit. But then turo changed their policies and it severely limited how much I could charge for mile overage. It made it way less worthwhile for me.

My only experience with Turo, the Jeep I rented remains in long term parking at the airport between rentals. The max parking fee was $10 and I gladly paid it, since the rental was waaaaay cheaper than any of the traditional car rental options. The guy used a lockbox and had a car wash membership. So they have basically zero physical involvement (other than oil change every so often I'd imagine). I thought it was genius, maybe you could steal some of those ideas.

Sometimes when a wheel bearing begins to fail you can hear a faint clicking sound without any noticeable play in the bearing. Also, it might be a worthy investment to put some Michelin tires on your rental fleet, perhaps some CrossClimates? They'll definitely be quieter and more confidence inducing than whatever is on there now... plus it'd be one less thing to worry about

I worked a number of years in the car rental world for one of the big five companies, and I can tell you that it is a very, very low margin business. While it would seem that $50 to $100 a day to rent a car would be profitable, it's often nowhere near. Turo does appear to take care of some of that problem (like not really needing a physical location) but the lack of margin is still there. I think however that your model of buying cars cheaply that need some updates and repairs and them moving them into rental can work. However, I think that you would likely make more money just retailing the repaired cars out for full market at this point.

That sure sounds like a wheel bearing to me! You did not properly simulate the condition he told you about. You did not do the test in a sharp wheel turn like the customer said. The other thing you should do is put the Durango on stands and run the car in drive to get the wheels turning. That will reveal the bearing noise pretty quick. Been there, done that!

I would lay odds that it's the tires. I've had absolutely horrible luck with Cooper Tires. I would bet you that the road noise is freaking out the renters. Also, due to that car being so big I would imagine that if the renter came out of a smaller car he's probably hugging the shoulder and mistaking the bumps on the side of the road for a bad suspension. With the extremes in temperature this time of year, concrete tends to get a little bit washboardie in spots .

I literally just today replaced a howling wheel bearing that was still as solid as a new one. I couldn't believe it. However, that noise does just seem like the tires from the sound of it. Now, in regard to the brake grabbing; make sure the pads are able to move somewhat freely in the shims. I've seen that issue before, the pads were tight enough in the shims that after a few stops, the heat expansion would tighten them up enough that they wouldn't move away from the rotor. Just something to check for at least if you're chasing down the grabbing issue. Anyway, keep up the great work JR! Loving this content!

These things are SUPER sensitive to wheel balance in the front end. Toss in crappy Cooper tires (I've inherited several sets over the rears buying cars and they're ALWAYS awful) and you've got a recipe for disaster. I had to take mine in and have the tires road force balanced because the steering wheel would shimmy around 65mph. The tire guy noted one tire had a "bit of a hop" that he couldn't balance out even after road force balance and put it on the rear. Now every time I change from snow tires to summer tires I have to keep that one on the rear as otherwise it drives me nuts on the freeway. These are Dean tires that came with the Jeep. Guess who owns Dean tires? Cooper. I'd replace them but I can't justify it with tread left on them when I drive it less than 1500 miles a year.

Heh. I rented a brand new Buick Century in the late nineties. Basically drove it Vancouver to Toronto in about 48 hours, all over a suburb outside TO finding a rental house for my passenger, drove to Montreal to pick up some of his family, back to TO, down to Jackson MI for a reunion, back to TO, then back West. The rental guy offered to drop me off at home after I paid for the (daily rate, something silly cheap, and unlimited miles)and on the drive I suggested he might want to do an oil change before sending it out again. “Yeah, right, how many mi… *glances at odometer* holy ****”.

Hey, I had a new set of Cooper tires put on my Lexus about a year ago. I dealt noise sounding like wheel bearing whoosh with constant vibration at around 65 to 80 mph. Had the struts replaced all around, a rim replaced thinking a bit of a bend, and eventually after 18000 miles found a bald spot on one tire. Basically two of my tires had their belts separated and ended up up creating a huge headache. Put a new set of Michelins, and the car operates like new. Keep an eye on those tires. It started just as a minor noise and gradually became worse over time.

If it's 4wd (sorry didn't feel like going back in vid) check axle nut. Also a wheel bearing can definitely make slight noise before going completely out. The typical 12 and 6 back and forth may not make the noise you are looking fpr

I finally used Turo last week while on vacation, to rent an mk5 Supra for the week. (I had not driven a 3.0 yet, so felt the need to try it out) Rates were ok, but the deposit is what scares most of us off. I had the car for 3 nights, and only put 150 miles on it. The deposit was 750! The actual car rental was only 335! So for most people, they cant swing a massive deposit just to rent a car. You don't get the deposit back until 3 days after drop off. So I was out about 1k, just to rent a sporty car for 3 days. The deposit didn't come back until I was back at home, and back to work. Using your own insurance only saves you 200 on that massive deposit. Im sure renting normal cars requires less deposit, but at that level, just go to Budget or Avis. Overall I'm pretty disappointed with Turo. If you want to rent anything considered higher end, or close to it, expect to pay over 1k initially for your rental. I loved the mk5, and really want to buy one of my own, but even having a positive experience, I probably won't use Turo again.

Ditch Turo entirely because renters tend to abuse cars and cause nothing but problems. Buy, refurbish, and sell used cars as a side business. Once the car is gone it is not your problem any longer. True story, when I worked for a major airline over 20 years ago we rented a van to replace one we owned while it was going for repairs. In 2 weeks multiple drivers destroyed the rental van. It was dented, scratched, and filthy inside with coffee spills/French fries under the seats, etc. When it was returned the rental car employee was like “WTF?” and my boss was acting as if it was no big deal “Yeah man…we had the complete coverage for all damages” when I know for a fact we did not. They took the van back without any penalty charges only because we were a major customer. It was still a very scumbag move.

It did sound like a wheel bearing while you were driving, that is the sound my Saturn made when it was going out. On a lift the wheel didn't have noticeable play, didn't make any sound when spinning it by hand, remember you're spinning it a lot slower & with no load on it vs when driving but you could feel it a little when spinning it by hand in the strut spring. Place your hand on the spring while spinning the wheel, see if you can feel any vibration. Looking at the hub with the wheel & rotor off you could definitely see it was bad then. Anyways I replaced it that sound was gone.

Turo's a bit of a mixed bad it seems; can be good/profitable, but can also be a headache and/or costly. I had some friends that had a kayak sales business who decided to get into _renting_ them too. Like Turo, that introduces a bunch of concerns like insurance coverage, business hours and availability for the renting, rules/regulations for the renters, maintenance/cleaning and so on. In the end, they ended up _hating_ the business because of the rental fleet, and actually got out of that business altogether; it just sort built their lives around renting boats, and it wasn't all that profitable. I guess the cautionary tale there is if you find Turo is eating too much into your time, or not turing a _very_ healthy profit, get out of it sooner than later.

There is a company in Australia that found a way to put the car keys in a box locked with a pin and as a customer you get the pin after you paid and the you can “self serve” the keys to the car , no need to interact with the owner . Some rental properties do the same a box with a pin and the keys inside . Maybe research those options to avoid having to use your time for that

That way you only have to interrupt yourself to grab the keys and clean the car and put them back out for the next pickup. TBH no one wants to meet up to get the keys for Airbnbs or Turo rentals. Not sure what you said about the Durango and what you did but as a businessman to offer him fair compensation. You trade him up to the Porsche unless you needed that extra space but apparently you need a fleet of smaller cars like darts because then you'll be moving them all the time then you need to hire a receptionist and if that office space is empty in your other building. Operate out of there

Least where I'm at which isn't a big tourist area but is a major airport most of the cars I see on Turo are higher end models, Teslas, Porsche, etc. With the Dart its just a good cheap rental but again you need to know your area and what is going to be hot in your market. Hopefully if it doesn't work out you can just flip the cars and just wash your hands of it, and maybe even make a little bit at the end of the day. Its similar to Doordash/Uber where if your market is terrible or over-saturated with drivers, you won't make much.

Turn off traction control and other driver aids, have someone run the vehicle on the lift, this will eliminate tire noise and allow you to pinpoint If it has a bad wheel bearing , not all bad wheel bearing have play, i use this method at work for most rotational noise that’s hard to find.

Those coopers are a pretty good tire and not chinese. But Ive only put them on a Volvo and not an SUV. I put LT Cooper ATs on my 13 grand cherokee and it felt so awesome after. BIG problem on this platform is upper front a arm bushings. For some reason the calipers always look like crap on these, get coated ones (cardone=silver, NAPA eclipse= black, powerstop= red). I did a full brake job with calipers on the 13 and had to have a shop adjust the rear parking brake and get air out of the ABS pump (after messing with it a lot, never had a real issue with this in the past), he commented it was pretty annoying to do.

If the Cayenne isn't renting for that price, then by definition of supply/demand value it is not worth what you're asking. Perhaps "higher end" rentals expect a higher level of service, like 12 hours a day pickup and drop off and not the Turo setup. Try lowering by 10% then 15% just to experiment.
