We bought this Mechanically Totaled Porsche Panamera S for Scrap Value, and took it straight to the dealer because it was under a Recall that might just cover it's major engine issue, and make it worth several times what we paid...

Well replacing intake filter requires removing front bumper, also Panamera has the most electronic systems within porsche family, and some porsche indie shop straight refuse to repair them. It’s normal. If you don’t get a coupon or deal, oil changes for Porsches are a consistent $700-800. Plugs are 3 years or 30k miles. The best part, these prices are consistent whether it’s my 911 or my wife’s Macan. I skip the plugs, that’s a cash grab, but the oil changes are labor intensive and there’s little things they do that goes beyond just oil - like cleaning out water drain holes, etc.

How many owners have paid for the repairs, then had the engine go because they didn't fix the real problem. Or maybe the strategy is to get you to pay for the useless repairs, to make up for the labor cost on the recall repair they finally tell you about when you agree to the other stuff. It might have been interesting to see if other dealers missed the recall too.

You don't need to mess with timing replacing those adjuster bolts on the back. Since there's four the back case stays in place and you just replace one at a time. Those little bolts are NOT a lot of torque, only like 8nm and a 180 angle. However, if the bolts are loose or broken then the adjust itself should be replaced at which point timing would be dealt with.

Driving nice cars comes at a great cost that most of us on the planet could never justify. It would be one thing if the cost was mostly the original purchase price. But in actuality it's the cost in the long run from maintenance. We'd all be bankrupt with a $10k repair. One thing goes wrong and we're broke.

My Mazda dealer I’ve been with since 2015 takes great care of my car for a very reasonable price. My GMC dealer I’ve been with since getting my 2500 in 2021 charges >$250/hr, always tries to upsell me on some bs, and has more than once failed to fully address the issue I took the truck into them for. From what I’ve seen my Mazda dealer is a rare exception to the norm. Appreciate them a lot more since I’ve seen what other places are like.

as the consumer, you have to ask questions and have an idea of what/why you are bringing the car in for. Our Mazda (and Subaru) dealer always want $60 ($30 for filter + $30 for labor) to replace the cabin air filter. They always show me an extremely dirty filter packed w/leaves from trees we don't have AND the cars are garage kept. It takes 5 minutes to replace the filter on each car pulling the glove box door out. Filters are $14 from other places. Being somewhat knowledgeable can save you money.

30:22 one issue with the chinese timing kits? The chains are made of chinese playdonium. You might find yourself having to redo this job when the chain stretches beyond the tensioner's ability to take up the slack. It was a problem with sub-standard motorcycle chains too.
@TurboCroissant
@TurboCroissant 17 күн бұрын
yeah, sad to cheap out with that. i wonder what the quality parts cost. Edit: Sam responded in another comment. He said, "So an OEM kit was around 4x more than the Amazon one. If this was a super special car or something rare I would've gone that route, but the purpose here was to see how much of a budget we could keep. So for everyone that is mad I used a cheap timing chain kit, let me know how many miles your cheap timing kit went before it gernaded? The guides are plastic on every kit. It really comes down to the longevity of the chain and tensioner..."

Great job. Leisurely pace, with all the needed explanations about the workflow. Good camera work too, showing what's important. Though with this much mileage, the car should be sold for scrap yard prices, even if it's in perfect running order. it's just too old and fatigued. If it needs new motor mounts, then who knows what else is worn out structurally? Hope the car lasts at least another 50k before giving any more trouble.
