You know why The Turtles wrote and recorded "Elenore"? Because White Whale Records (their label) asked the band to do another "Happy Together", which is exactly what The Turtles did NOT want to do. So THIS awesome record is the result, because according to Flo & Eddie themselves (they pretty much ARE The Turtles now), they came up with lyrical ideas such as "you're my pride and joy, et cetera" because [1] they didn't really think the label would be insane enough to release it as a single and [2] because it is such a brilliantly twisted song, the band figured it would bomb! But it didn't, and some fans consider "Elenore" to be perhaps The Turtles' best record.

The producers at the time spent all their time getting the mono mix right, as that was what got played on mono AM radio and played on mono phonographs, which most youth of the time had. The stereo mix was an afterthought made by the studio engineer. Most producers didn't event think it was worth their time to stick around and often left right after finishing the mono mix. That is why mono is indeed best for most 60's and early 70's pop tunes!

The Turtles could really play! Barbata and, Pons here (Portz as well) were an outstanding rythm section...the band really laid out their diversity and chops for everyone to see on Battle of the Bands. This particular MONO mix is a thing of beauty...and, the songwriting, arrangement and, performances are the work of stealth musical ninjas! A magnificent pop song that recalls the pre-rock and roll goodtime singalongs that their parents probably grew up with...laying down hooks galore in a swingin summertime blast of sunshine that appears to be as unhip as it possibly could be at a first/casual listen buuuut, as mentioned in the comments here - the various bandmembers are adding their own subtle/nuanced bits and flashes of serious musicianship in their sneaky ways that are definitely much more noticeable in this killer MONO mix. Topping it all of is a set of lyrics and an extremely well arranged and, executed lead/background vocal that is all at once casual, carefree, goofy, self-deprecating, clever, a throwback and, progressive all at once... This song is so unhip that it it doesn't even care because it will always be awesome Pretty genius

Part 2 of my reply 5.) Movies were all mono also. So yes, while stereo came out in 1958, it wasn't until cheap electronics was available in the 1973 time frame that youth began to make the shift to listening in stereo. Before then, stereo was only listened to by older people with money, not youth. You are correct that in some cases, the mono & stereo versions were mixed very similar. It is difficult to tell the difference. But in many cases, as my channel proves, the mono mix is the best mix

Give me the original mono 45 version of "Elanor" anytime. The sound quality is loud and punchy and it grabs you by the ears. I also have this original white whale 45 with it's original picture sleeve. Elanor by the the Turtles in it's original mono glory........the way it was meant to be heard way back in 1968. Remember MONO is the ONE!!!
@WABCRADIO7713 жыл бұрын
Correct - I did not get a stereo phonograph till 1971, but had a stereo cassette deck in 1968. But that did not matter, as I listened to AM Top 40 radio (WABC) as did most youth of the time, and that of course was in mono. The records I bought were mostly in mono too. I know from many in my typical middle class schools in the 60's & 70's that was the case for most youth - mono records and mono Top 40 radio. The record producers felt the same way - focusing on the mono mix (eg. Capitol & Motown)
@WABCRADIO7713 жыл бұрын
Part 2 - About the mono mixes not being popular today (including "Elenor"). It has nothing to do with popularity. The reason you only hear stereo mixes today is because radio programers THINK that is all listeners want to hear. Plus, the music packages that radio stations get from companies like TM, only have stereo mixes on them, so the original mono mix isn't even available to radio stations unless someone with the initiative tracks down the orig 45 and loads it onto the station's hard drive.

I forgot all about this song!!! LOVE IT!
@WABCRADIO7713 жыл бұрын
You are correct - but move the time frame to after about 1973. Here is why: 1.) The 45 RPM record was like the MP3 of today. That is the format all the youth had. 2.) Most youth did not have a stereo phonograph. Their parents might have, but they did not. So even if they had the LP, it was most likely the mono pressing. Only did around 1973 when cheap electronics, such as the Electrophonic brand came out did kids have stereos. 3.) AM Top 40 radio ruled - and that was mono. 4.) Car radios mono

@ChriTur Johnny Barbata was ahead of his time, and vastly under-rated. He was doing a lot of interesting and different rhythmic combinations. If you ever saw the Turtles' appearance on the Andy Williams show, you'd have seen his crazy drum set... lots of tom toms and cymbals, and he made use of them in tasteful, intriguing ways. All within a 3-minute song!

Part 2 - You are also correct that for many records, the difference between the mono and stereo mixes is not great and not noticeable by many, however, record geeks like myself DO know the difference. However, there are MANY records where the difference is incredible. Great examples:Sounds of Silence, Gimme Gimme Good Lovin, most Motown records and of course Beatles tunes from before 1966. Many records, especially before 1968 have "too wide" stereo mixes called the "ping pong effect" - just bad!
@WABCRADIO7713 жыл бұрын
Up till 1973 when the cheap Electrophonic stereo combo record player 8 track and radio came out, most kids only had mono audio equipment. Sure there are exceptions. So even if they had Led Zep LP's, they still heard them only in mono. Most parents did not allow their kids to touch their expensive Magnovox console stereos. Like music in general, when it comes to "the mix", everyone's got their own opinion. So if you prefer stereo mixes for pop & rock music up till 1973-great! I prefer orig mono.

I can't help remembering you, Jo Ann, that night New Years Eve 2016, when I performed this for you on mourh organ. So sorry your life went all told downhill. I know my own life was being tested, although I WOULD bounce back soon enough, and we suffered a breakup. Yes, I know fate was unkind to us both. I found no one else, you had a mental breakdown. But Jo Ann, even though we can never be together again, I still hold you near, and in my heart. If I could get through to you now, through your disheartening condition, i still love you. David.

It sounds like you have a little bit of compression on that song. I'm not sure if it's the 45 or compression in your setup. I heard another person with the same 45 having similar results. Also, there's some added reverb in there also that I never heard before, other than what the other person had. Just curious. I always enjoy your music. Thank you.

In the 60's most music was recorded to sound good on AM radio... lots of compression, EQ, and effects. That one little speaker in the dash had to do a lotta work.
@SEANFIR12 жыл бұрын
I don't think there will be a return to mono... mono in this instance is better because of the limitations of records and the equipment back then... there's no reason a stereo mix can't be better, but at the time most of the mono mixes had better bass because of the larger grooves... also singles sold more than Lp's so more effort was put into the mix of singles often adding extra dubs, effects etc. I am a fan of single mixes, but I have no allusions that we need to go back to mono
