I think the woman who played the daughter also appears in the Twilight Zone episode "The Hitchhiker." The man who played the father appears in the episode "Will the Real Marian Please Stand Up."

It's perplexing that the network would experiment with videotape when they had a winning formula shooting TWZ on film. You picked up on it immediately when you stated something appeared different with the depth of field. It will be interesting to see the other episodes that were shot on videotape to see how they compare. Agree, this was a dark episode with the plot twist at the end.

The show's budget was in deficit so the network thought shooting some shows with tape would save money. While it did save money the amount per episode was barely worth the effort and the experiment was cancelled.

It was all about budget. It really hurts those 6 episodes. 3 sucked anyway but 3 would have been classics if not for being on video not film.

“Long Distance Call” is a classic episode if not done on video.

I think the constant changes in formula, including this brief video tape experiment, actually gives it its charm.

I have a little discomfort watching videotaped episodes. Even though they're lit well the image itself has no texture like film does and TZ should have loads of atmospheric cinematographic textures for it to work rather than look like a stage play where all the light sources feel broadly artificial. However having whined about that, it's a good episode primarily because of how good Inger Stevens is as Jana. She manages to express both naivety, compassion, and alienation effectively in a short span of time.

As a former TV guy I love the videotape B&W episodes as there are so few remaining. And you're right they do look like a stage play, that's part of the reason why I like them.

@@jethro1963 there is one of those videotaped episodes I think is tremendous, but even so there is an artificially to it that sometimes disconnects me from the story.

@@robertjewell9727 It does lend itself to a certain type of setting. I love the look of the early/mid 60s Ed Sullivan shows when the B&W technology was at it's zenith. Also the early RCA colour technology was so vibrant and thankfully some of that was caught on tape and not erased. On the contrary there was a famous Canadian TV show that was remade in the 80s called The Littlest Hobo (about a traveling helpful German Shepherd). Everyone loves that show and remembers it fondly but I think it looks terrible (shot on tape).
