Excellent performance by Shatner who has said they were supposed to have four days to shoot it but had to do it in two. So hats off to Richard Donner for being able to shoot something this good so quickly.

This episode was written by Richard Matheson, the same man who wrote the Star Trek episode "The Enemy Within!"

Your reaction to seeing Captain Kirk was PRICELESS. Two seconds later you recognize that Richard Donner is directing. And then the reaction itself was EXACTLY what we all felt when we first saw it! I always associate the creature with the old war stories of Gremlins that would damage early airplanes. Also, I really think you would enjoy the banter in the Thin Man movies... They are the detective genre but the leads have AWESOME chemistry and the stories are wonderful. And oh the alcohol... clip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWrGn4ybe6uYeZY

When I was a young boy I would fly alone to spend summers with my grandparents. On every trip the stewardess would take me to the cockpit to meet the Captain. I watched for a minute or two then he pinned a pair of plastic American Airline wings on me and told me I was part of the club. At the end of the flight, a stewardess would take my hand (let me tell you they were beautiful women back in the day.) and walk me across the tarmac to my grandparents. All the advancements in the world pale by comparison to those memories.
@LA_HA Жыл бұрын
My grandparents used to tell us about taking flights and they said it was an event. That's why people dressed up, were on their best behavior, and service was top notch. On the other hand, people behaved and dressed well whenever they were in public. People now call it fake. I call it being social and caring about others, and I really think we really should get back to that mindset

This episode was redone for the Twilight Zone movie in 1983. John Lithgow played the Shatner’s character in that. Lithgow also played the main character in “3rd Rock from the Sun”, and Shatner played his boss, the “Big Giant Head” in an episode. They referenced the fact that both of them saw a man on the wing of an airplane.

What was going on in the 50s? Huge number of WWII vets, having seen horrible things people do, and for the first time we have nuclear weapons and Russia, our WWII ally is now our great enemy. People were scared of reality. Putting your fear into something less real is comforting.

In 1973, William Shatner's career was in a serious lull after Star Trek. He starred in a film called "The Horror at 37,000 Feet" in which he played a priest who has lost his faith but has to face an unspeakable evil on a plane. The title is pretty similar to this episode -- maybe that's why they hired Shatner? You might enjoy seeing him in a super cheesy film, Mystery Science Theater 3000-style; the film's up on KZbin. There's an ensemble cast of well-known actors from the time (Russell Johnson who was the Professor from Gilligan's Island, Buddy Ebsen who was both Jed Clampett from The Beverly Hillbillies and milk-drinking detective Barnaby Jones, Paul Winfield who was in The Terminator and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and lantern-jawed Chuck Connors who was in The Rifleman). I can't wait for your reactions to more Twilight Zone episodes like I Shot an Arrow Into the Air, A Penny for Your Thoughts, Shadow Play, Time Enough at Last, Kick the Can, and Printer's Devil. Oh, and my favorite episode of all, which never fails to make me cry (good tears, though), The Changing of the Guard, starring Donald Pleasence, who was in The Great Escape, Halloween, You Only Live Twice, and so many other great films.

Captain Kirk was in a lot of these anthology series before Star Trek. Like In Hitchcock presents. He’s actually in one of the best Hitchcock presents episodes, you guys should absolutely do a reaction for it. It’s called “the glass eye”, and I believe it’s one of 2 episodes that got an Emmy from “Hitchcock presents”. Shatner was also in a few other anthology series from late 50s early 60s, like in “outer limits” and “thriller”. He has another twilight zone episode too called “Nick of time”.

I love you guys reacting to old shows and movies, etc.; not just the stories but the things around them that were the norm back in the day. Back in the early days, smoking was allowed on board, then later changed to the first several rows of each cabin. There was no separation, so the smoke went everywhere anyway. And there were ashtrays in the armrests. The stewardesses (again, before "flight attendant" became vogue) brought around trays with cigarettes and matches on them and offered them like they do today with the peanuts and drinks! Some airlines even had their own brand with their logo. I worked in the Middle East in the 90's and it seemed everyone smoked on those intra-country flights even then. Pistols? There's no TSA or Air Marshals; people might have a pistol on them, or in a briefcase, etc. Or a bomb (or say they have a bomb) look up DB Cooper high jacking. Some airlines didn't even have a door on the cockpit, but just a heavy curtain. If you had young kids (like me in the 50's), you might even get to go up to the flight deck to look around and the pilots show you the instruments, etc. I did several times. I too would like to see "The Howling Man" and "To Serve Man" reviewed, as well as "The Hunt." You would enjoy both of those. Thanks again for the raction!

This episode was remade with John Lithgow as a segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), and then Shatner and Lithgow both referenced it in a scene during Shatner's first recurring appearance on 3rd Rock from the Sun. It was hilarious! "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" first aired in October, 1963. I recommend the 1954 sci-fi thriller "Them!" which terrified me as a child. I also recommend the following TZ episodes: The Shelter, It's a Good Life, Time Enough at Last, The Invaders (starring Agnes Moorehead from Bewitched), Eye of the Beholder, The Midnight Sun, Five Characters in Search of an Exit, Little Girl Lost, A Game of Pool (starring Jack Klugman from 12 Angry Men and Jonathan Winters), Nothing in the Dark (starring Robert Redford), Nick of Time (starring William Shatner), Shadow Play (starring Dennis Weaver of Steven Spielberg's Duel), The After Hours, Walking Distance, The Obsolete Man (starring Burgess Meredith), and Two (starring Charles Bronson of Death Wish and Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched). 3 other great episodes are: A Quality of Mercy (starring Leonard Nimoy, and Dean Stockwell from Quantum Leap), The Encounter (starring George Takei), and Valley of the Shadow (starring James Doohan).

Air travel was way less safe back then, so this must have resonated like crazy. Planes fell out of the sky on a pretty regular basis for arcane reasons that took ages to figure out, so the idea of a "gremlin" wreaking havoc on a wing would be truly nightmarish.

Afterwards, he is titlular character in, "TJ Hooker", as a police sargent. Then he is the host of, "Rescue 9-1-1". 👍

Straight up. This is THE fucking show lol. Every single show ever made after the twilight zone was influenced by it, and that is actually not an exaggeration. I don’t think there’s a director alive that hasn’t watched this whole show through front to back. The fact that y’all got spooked, even once, by a show that aired before your parents were even born speaks volumes lmao. Always have to put respect on the greats and this is the Mac Daddy of them all.
