The Twilight Zone was a great show. I just finished watching the 156 episodes over the past few weeks. It's one of those very old shows that you just don't mind watching again and again. The Twilight Zone I have seen most of the episodes more than twice over the years. I was watching this episode and saw a very funny moment that reminded me what others are going through in a day to day job. I thought I would take a break from the marketing videos and post something I find funny. Enjoy. Thanks CBS of yesteryear.

Man, I love this episode. I have watched every single one of them multiple times. Such good writing. Not bad for me being a 31 year old man. I have never missed a 24 hour marathon since I was about 11.

Okay, but would Hanley REALLY just give up his severance and pension just like that? He'd be an idiot to do so. Much better to leave with a handshake than a slap, knowing you'll be siphoning off some of Whipple's money until the end of your life!

These are the players - with or without a scorecard. In one corner a machine; in the other, one Wallace V. Whipple, man. And the game? It happens to be the historical battle between flesh and steel, between the brain of man and the product of man's brain. We don't make book on this one and predict no winner... but we can tell you for this particular contest, there is standing room only - in the Twilight Zone.

Unfortunately, this is only half of the story. The other side to this coin is if Mr. Whipple didn't innovate and replace human labor with machine labor, he would eventually lose his company to another company that did. We are coming to a time now in human history where machines are more efficient than men. Maybe one day, with enough compassion, we can bring in a Universal Basic Income but it will be after a lot of misery, shame and anger.

BoyScout1960 "Okay, but would Hanley REALLY just give up his severance and pension just like that? He'd be an idiot to do so. ..." That's OK... Whipple gets his comeuppance in the end (watch the full program) along with the rest of the community. A hazard of taking things out of context.

Seriously. This is a rare dud in the Twilight Zone canon. Absolutely everything about it is defending the practice it's supposed to be attacking. Whipple's critics all sound like raving cranks who act like they ENJOY work, and WANT parking lots to be crammed full, and hallways noisy with the voices of copious co-workers. Hanley slaps him, showing he's totally lost the argument, and Whipple just smiles and shows him how the elevator works. He's portrayed as such a sensible, relatable character, it's baffling that we're not supposed to side with him. Audiences in the 60s should have been able to remember what it was like working hard labor in factories BEFORE automation. That black guy should have remembered that his grandfather's freedom came from people deciding maybe manual labor isn't the best backbone for an economy. "who's going to buy" the products the company makes? Probably a lot more people, as their prices plummet.

Kairu Hakubi. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. Just in case you are serious, I visited your channel to see what kind of person would make such a statement. I listened to voice over demo, very nice work by the way. However have you heard some of the advanced text to speech software. One day they will have that technology perfected. Will that be a good thing for you? In this day and age everyone can potentially be replaced by a machine.

This is about replacement by automation but wouldn't society social consequences be the same if replacement was by machine, slave labor, off shore production or mass imported labor of those willing to work cheaper.

Car Dealers of the future. I thought it was funny in 1964 when I was 10. The machines firing him is even funnier. Mel (I mean Whipple) cries in his beer. SO many people I wish I'd done that to before I retired. Many liberal so called journalists deserve a back hand like this one.

This was silly, not funny, not educational, barely entertaining. Now don't get me wrong, as a kid I loved watching Twilight Zone, but this particular episode was one of the more sanctimonious ones. Besides, as one of the commenters pointed out, Hanley would have had to be an "idiot" to have thrown away his severance pay and pension, not to mention end up in jail for assault and battery! High morals are fine and dandy when you're rich, but they're too pricey when you're trying to put food on the table or keep a roof over your head. Plus Violence Is NEVER An Acceptable Option!!!
