Damon is hated by everyone because he does not save or help anyone on his own, but rather does this for fear that she will be angry with him.Elena or Bonnie in particular does not save anyone he does not know or is not the cause of his death But when the twins were kidnapped by their nanny, he could not have intervened because he would not be the cause of what would happen to the two girls. I didn't like Ric discrediting Caroline. Like, she asked to become pregnant with his and Jo's kids but she didn't. She took on the responsibility of becoming a mother to them like Jo had wanted otherwise why would she have her babies transferred into Caroline. Ric saying that he was going to take the twins far away from Caroline and everyone else was hurtful but saying that the girls were his and Jo's and practically discrediting everything that she did and has done for them up until that point you can tell that it broke her.

"Two of history's most prolific killers" she wasn't saying they were the only two. Besides, she probably means for this era. Klaus and Kol did tone it down on the killings.
