I love the videos on this channel. They serve as an excellent recap of overarching idea of each philosopher that can help propel students towards further than, and aid in exam preparation. Great work.

I really like this video. Great explanation. The only thing I would like to add is that even in 'the prince' Machiavelli says that the prince should always thrive to be loved by the people over the love/regard of the more influential or any other because that is the best defence against almost all ways of losing ones power (what is the goal of the prince). And that 'fear trumps love' mostly because love must be given by the people and fear you (the prince) yourself are able to educe, so the prince should concentrate more on the things he CAN do than the things he has only marginally influence over. Furthermore the love will come on its own when the people see that what the prince does brings peace and prosperity. So the balance between love (aka 'job well done' for the price) and fear (aka 'breaking the law [=moral for Machiavelli] is bad' for the people), what is what the prince allways should thrive for after Machiavelli, will come on its own as long the prince DOES a good job and doesn't forget to enforce the law with fear as his most essential tool.

I recommend "Life of Castruccio Castracani".I wonder if he was"The Prince".He was a more effective one than Cesare Borgia.

Funny how I read these things or watch videos on Machiavelli and it is always students making claims like this. I have read both of these works and I was not required by a class. I feel that schools requiring reading makes students dislike the reading as it is just another stepping stone to a degree they feel is the gateway to a job.

I think it's easy to see how the two can go hand in hand. After all Machiavelli wrote the Prince not for himselfbut for the Medici. And it is in fact good advice for Lorenzo in his specific case. Remember in school when you'd have to debate a side you didnt quite agree with to get your grade? That is essentially what Machiavelli does here. And as he said a republic needs leaders, this advice can also aide an elected official to remain in their position. To me the points do not contradict. What he says works together. Maybe it's because i think the way he does or maybe I'm missing something. I dunni

Dude does a good job of ‘splaining. I don't see Machiavelli as a political chameleon at all and he is not a republican (albeit that is arguable). Machiavelli's Republicanism accepts it as the lessor of two evils, i.e. despotic leader or a leadership recognized by the people. "The Prince" is satire, a form of backhand advice. From the introductory faint praise to Medici, to its running advice column for soon to be kings, the work apparently has gone over the heads of sophist republicans for more than 500 hundred years. In this evasion of detection it is brilliant and it is time to recognize it for what it is, literature of the highest quality and purpose.

Machiavelli seeks to maintain the STATE by maintaining the rule, I don't know how you guys interpreted that as a solely personal goal, if the ends justifies the means, then he'd be more utilitarian than pragmatic Many examples like on Scipio Africanus and Hannibal Barca was based on that mindset. Also the ends justifies the means doesn't mainly pertain to the Prince, if you were to synthesize both works, then you might notice that The prince is Machiavelli's means to his ends which is the discourses.

The Prince was written as a job resume to the Medici because Machiavelli was going crazy living in exile since he knew he was smart and could do a lot of good working within politics.
